I think these are one of those actors who fit in so well with their characters and you happen to ship these characters so much that you want the actors to be together too...but unlikely that might happen

Elizabeth said in an interview that Fitz and Simmons are like a team within a team. I love that because her and Iain are also like a team within a team. Their awkwardness in this screen test perfectly matches each other. No wonder the writers chose them.
I got to meet these two a couple of weeks ago and oh my god. They are absolutely adorable in person, and two of the nicest, most down to earth people I've ever met. I have to admit, I had a fangirl moment. Gah, these two are just so cheek-pinching cute!! 🙈
Either this screen test was so good, they worked in an EXTREMELY similar situation into the Season 1 finale (but drowning or running out of air instead of being blow to bits like in this version...plus it should be noted that Fitz spoke lightly of Ward, instead of hating him, so the writers either hadn't decided he was evil yet or were just keeping that a secret from everyone), or they always knew how they were gonna end Season 1 (or knew how they were gonna conclude FitzSimmons' Season 1 arc, at least).
