For those saying ‘being locked in prison for the rest of their life is the best punishment’...I mean true. But RARELY do criminals actually stay in prison forever. Many get out way before the were ‘supposed’ to. I am a recent criminology grad so I have a lot of mixed feeling about the death penalty, and I’m neither supporting nor condemning it. Just something I thought I’d throw out there. Lots of things need to be changed with the CJ system.

No matter a person's crimes and how evil the crimes were, we as humans do not have the right to take another's life. The death penalty is not a punishment, it is simply just killing another person who was created with God's image and likeness, just as we were. If it was me in a murderer's shoes, I would rather die and choose the death penalty than have to sit in prison for the rest of my life enduring the dangers of prison and being haunted by what I did. I am glad he was caught but NOBODY has the right to take the life of another person, despite the crimes. Forgiveness and hope for repentance should always be there and nobody deserves to be killed by another person even if that person killed other people. He was not a danger to society by being locked in prison, therefore that should have been his punishment - life in prison to think about what he did and not take the easy way out which is death.

interestingly the death penalty is actually more expensive than keeping someone in jail in the US at least, between the appeals process you have to have access to as a death row inmate, the special place they're held, the 23 hr a day surveillance and then the execution itself. So while some people might not agree with it on the moral side of things, they can't deny that financially it doesnt make sense. What concerns me the most, though, is how flawed the criminal justice system is in the US. The Innocence Project really opened my eyes to the sheer volume of blatant wrongful convictions that have led to unlawful killings of innocent people. I think it was Jason Flom who said for him, the death penalty wasn't worth it if one innocent life is lost, and we know for a fact that there have been many. I have to agree. Every innocent person executed also means a criminal that's likely still out there, who's guilty of something deemed worthy of the death penalty. I think we need dramatic criminal justice reforms, both to abolish the death penalty *and* put a plan in place that is more cost effective to ensure that these people are actually guilty and if so, never released to the public again. It's crazy to me that you can be killed for a murder you have no substantial link to and yet we let serial child abusers and rapists away with sentences as short as a few years, and then they reoffend (because shocker, they're sick and need treatment or locked up forever if untreatable!).

Even if we were able to prosecute someone knowing with 100% certainty that they are guilty of a heinous crime.
I still think that, ethically/morally, logically etc, the state should never be able to take the life of one of their citizens, no matter what the crime is.
The state has limited resources, its own specific agendas and biases etc. Just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Marvellis is my cousin on my dads side.
I never thought I'd see someone cover this story. My dad (he was a terrible person very abusive and did soo many evil hearted things. So I have a hard time calling him dad.) Is James Burney and my mkm divorced him when i was 1 or 2 maybe. My whole family remembers how evil he was and through James Burney I am directly related to Marvellis. My Mom always made sure to tell us everything we (being my older sister and I as my oldest sister already knew. She was 11 when I was born and 8 when my other sister was born so she knew exactly how evil our 'dad'was. It's a blessing that she has a different dad. All three of is have the same mom but the oldest has a different dad or that was unclear) wanted to know about that side of our family. While my parents are divorced, my immediate family (grandma, mom, two older sisters) and I still live in a small city that is a suburb of Dayton. As eerie as it is my older sister (the one who shares a 'dad' and mom with me) looks like Marvellis to a certaindegree. I am very happy my mom is e extremely strong and despite how hard it was, she got out of that insanely abusive relationship and saved our family. I dont have a father but when I'm reminded of the things he did I'm not even mad.

I’m a Christian so I know I shouldn’t be for the death penalty but I literally go back and forth on it. If my loved one was murdered I’d have this little voice in the back of my head saying he/she can break out of prison if they’re given life without the possibility of parole so I wouldn’t wanna risk a killer escaping because it has happened before, or they could get life in prison with the possibility of parole which would be worse! I know God gives God takes but it’s really hard for me to choose a side because I understand families who want the death penalty.

I used to have a serious issue with the death penalty. I was afraid of innocent people being put to death, and I do still worry about that. And yet, capital punishment isn't really a deterrent. States that have capital punishment tend to have higher murder rates than those that do not. Also, there is far too many cases of wrongful convictions and questionable convictions for me to ever be ok with state sanctioned murder. On top of that, it is far more expensive to have someone on death row than keeping someone imprisoned for life, either way, the prisons and criminal justice system in general needs a complete overhaul. It just doesn't work.

I feel like that’s too easy of a death on those who commit such horrible crimes: they should be behind bars for the rest of their lives paying for what they’ve done. I also don’t think we as humans are above any other human to purposely kill another just because it’s an “eye for an eye” I wouldn’t want that job to inject them and kill them that’d be on my conscious forever.

The make friends that they get to hang out with all the time, get three meals a day, don't have to work or pay bills, watch TV and play video games. Yes they lose there "freedom" but the jail systems are so soft now. There are homeless people that commit crimes just so they have a warm place to life and three meals a day. PLUS we tax payers have to pay for all of this and it costs a fortune!

I believe that the victims family should choose whether the criminal is locked up or put on death row. Because some families may want revenge but there are many out there that may not want to. Furthermore, the death penalty system is so incredibly rigged. It disproportionately targets people of colour, economically disadvantaged people, and those with mental illness or disabilities. People unable to afford quality legal representation, and unfamiliar with the justice system are not getting a fair go out of this, compared to a white rich man. I mean just talking about prison time, a black prisoner serving time for sexual assault is three and-a-half times more likely to be innocent than a white sexual assault convict. So imagine how disgustingly messed up it is with the death penalty. And a database of convicted people said to be innocent, includes 150 allegedly wrongfully executed people.
I honestly think the death penalty is a risky move and with the system the US has today, life in prison has to be the safest route until the racially biased system is moved out of place and we can FAIRLY execute a criminal with CERTAINTY.

When there is ZERO doubt of guilt, I support capital punishment. Especially for mass murder, spree killers, and violent crimes involving children. Many of those kinds of killers cannot be rehabilitated, and for pedophilia, there is NO rehabilitation possible. If there is undisputed evidence, the crime is on record, or there is a genuine confession of guilt, yes, I am 100% in favor of the death penalty for situations as I described above.

I’ve been speaking up about this more recently since there’s been a lot of discourse surrounding the death penalty. As the victim of a truly heinous crime, and having had two family members die as the result of separate heinous crimes as well, I believe the death penalty should be presented as an option to victims/their families. I have no interest in revenge, but knowing that someone who hurt me severely for a large portion of my childhood is gone and not out there would bring me peace. I think a lot of times victims of these types of crimes are left out of the conversation and people who literally have no stake in the discussion (people who have not been victims of these types of crimes, known people who have been on death row or committed these types of crimes, or people who have worked within the justice field or done extensive research on this stuff) like to share their opinions on it as if their voice should hold weight in the discussion. There is no doubt that our current justice system is hugely corrupt, racist, classist, ableist, etc and that it does very little to actually benefit victims of crime, criminals in need of rehabilitation, or the public. I believe that we essentially need to abolish our entire system and re think how we approach crime. Social safety nets and preventive measures need to be put in place to help prevent minor crime and help those who often get locked away for unfair reasons, victims of crime should be the most major voice and the deciding factor on how the person who hurt them or their family member is “punished”- they were, after all, the ones hurt and therefore the only person who can truly make the call on what justice is to them and what they need to heal. If they want restorative justice, that’s what they should receive. Rehabilitation centers for people who commit crimes and are in the process of taking accountability should exist and should focus on nor only holding the person accountable, but addressing underlying issues and making sure the crime does not happen again and that the victim of the crime feels that this person is truly changing. If a victim wants a life sentence or a death penalty, they should also be able to receive that, in extremely heinous cases. Most minor crime could probably be handled with a restorative justice circle and issues within society that lead to things such as people’s need to rob others being diminished. For truly heinous crimes, the victim should be able to sentence someone to death or to be locked away if it is what brings them peace. This is an immensely difficult topic and one that I’ve spent a lot of time looking into as I haven’t really been able to find answers from people on what to do with extreme cases of crime but I truly think we need a much more victim centered approach to crime with a larger range of options on how to handle those who have hurt others.

ok so if it was YOUR brother or sister or aunt or uncle or mom or dad that he shot & killed for a jacket or some other petty shit, you wouldn’t want him dead? cus i know you would. that is pure evil in human form, it deserves to be rid of. if they had some remorse, okay, then the death penalty isn’t necessary but these mfs didn’t even blink,
