  • This is a long one! I didn't want to cut it down too much because I had a lot to say. If you like chatty videos, this is it! I am feeling so overwhelmed and I need to stop putting so much pressure on myself. So in this video I created a self care page in my Big Happy Planner basically all about what I am going to try to let go of in my life.

I love your videos and I like coming back to the “chatty” ones. When I lived in France last summer, I rewarded myself with one of your videos when I completed a task. Now I watch your videos when I’m stressed out because I find them calming and comforting. Thank you for making them and thank you for being you 🌷

"Growing old is a privilege." Wow. I needed to hear these words. I have been struggling with the concept of getting old for a few years now, but hearing you say that and that you lost your husband when he was 45, those words immediatly changed my perspective. You are right, I get the privilege of seeing my family grow and spend time with my husband, etc. So Mary Ellen.....THANK YOU!

Mary Ellen, thank you for being so transparent...we can ALL relate. And this is such a creative tool to give ourselves permission not to be perfect. Love it. Also, I dont know what the drama was in the planner community about you (nor do I want to) - but I can't imagine why...you are one of the sweetest and most creative planners on You Tube. I can't recreate your spreads but I love watching you and listening and seeing Bumble. Be encouraged and just DO YOU!

Mary Ellen, I am just finding this and want to say you are so right. I am closer to 79 than 78 and totally agree. My husband of almost 36 years passed at the day before his 71st birthday 17 years ago. My 2 year older brother passed 5 years ago and my mom 8 weeks later. I had no children that broke my heart, so now I am the last of my generation. I too have felt like this way, it all of a sudden dawned on me that I am Brenda and can’t be Loretta because I am not her. I have different limits. Thank you Merry Ellen and I hope now things are better.

I really, really needed this video today. I'm only 10 minutes in and so much of what you're saying is speaking to my heart. I very recently got into this hobby due to stress about juggling my job, college, gym, and social schedules on top of planning my wedding next June. You're one of the first YTers I found that I really enjoyed, and all those things I have felt so stressed about? I am now reminded of just how lucky I am to have them. Thank you ❤️

In the last couple of months, I have learned that at least two of my favorite content creators have ADD. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and it's so refreshing when I learn that people who inspire me also have it. I sometimes watch planner videos to get motivated, but it's helpful to remember that a lot of us experience similar challenges, even when it looks like we have our shit together. Thank you for being so open and for being such a positive part of the planner community.

I suffered a heart attack last September and the experience made me realize how fortunate i am to have a second chance. I too, worried about insignificant things. It is difficult to break habits of a lifetime, but with work and determination, you can keep them at bay. All the best, Ruth B.

Mary Ellen - one of the many talents you share with your audience is your ability to connect as your authentic self, and while that comes through in each video, it's most significant and valuable here. You are absolutely allowed to feel grateful for your work, your life, your relationships, etc. and also feel anxious and overwhelmed by those same things. You are so good at reminding people to practice gratitude, and it's because of you that I include a gratitude list in my planner/journal every week. When work and life overwhelm me and make me feel anxious, I turn to your videos for comfort, inspiration, laughs, and of course, Bumble sounds and sightings. You are a gift to many - thank you for being you and for all that you do.

It is around 11pm right now in India and I'm listening to you talk on this video..it's like night time therapy on the radio. I relate to all the feelings, even though I don't relate to the events exactly. I remember pinging you on IG about 7 to 8 months ago saying I'm an introvert and how do u manage life. I still struggle. But this somehow helps to know that it's okay to let go. It's a good thing to let go.
Thank you so much for this video.

I have always felt like I am the only person that has these same feelings/issues. Because of being a perfectionist...I don't get anything done. House, ( I want it to be clutter free & peaceful but...) stickers/Planners, (but I keep buying because I love them..then beat myself up for the money I spend & not putting them in my planners) There is so much more..I've always been a list maker..and nothing becomes of it. Thank you so much Mary Ellen for this video. I will try & stop beating myself up..but also continue to make changes.

There comes a point in every You Tuber’s life where they’ve grown their channel beyond what they can comfortably handle on their own. You are at that point. That’s a good problem to have. An assistant would help with a lot of what you had on your list and give you the freedom to focus on creating, innovating and growing. You are one of the good ones to watch so keep moving forward.

Thank you for being so open about your life. About how acceptance and letting go is such an important part of self care. The Serenity Prayer says it all "God grant me serenity to accept things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference." To me this mantra applies to all of us, not just the original audience.

    Hi ME!
I watch you daily, never have commented. You had me at "getting 10 self help books from the library"! I was crying with you and I try to never cry. I remember doing that when I was 10!!!!!! Making the list of things for everything. You are strong, beautiful and vibrant, do not let the enemy destroy your beautiful heart and soul. You are unique and exquisite, the enemy targets souls like yours... fight back. Put your thoughts on paper, wipe your tears and ask God for armor. He will give you that, most reassuring He is fighting next to you.
I repeat, get up and fight. We all.....ALL.... feel that sometimes. You are Beautiful ❤️! Thank you for having the courage to share your thoughts and feelings. I'm praying for you to get over this hurdle but I think "letting go" is everything we need to do sometimes.
    Sweet slumber,
    Lynn Villarreal

I am turning 70 next month. I'm hyper organized and have ADHD and I'm still feeling like a failure. And yet, life is good really. My first husband died in 2010 from leukemia. I married 6 years later and he's wonderful and patient and we laugh a lot, and i have kids and friends...but I just want to feel like I'm improving. I need to let go. This was good foralthy! me. I watch absolutely no other planners, and I don’t even plan the way you do. I just stumbled across your videos one night when I couldn’t fall asleep, and I just found you to immediately be soothing and interesting and mesmerizing and calming all at the same time. I love your creativity, and I feel so invested in seeing how each spread turns out! I went back through and have watched all your videos, often as background when I’m working away at home, and you just are so soothing. (I do try to watch ads to help offset the fact that I’ll never use your affiliate links since I don’t plan ☺️) Anyway, I am certain it makes me a weirdo, but I wanted to let you know that someone totally not in the planner community thinks you’re pretty amazing. I loved Bob Ross as a kid, and I don’t paint, either, and you have that same soothing and creative feel to me. Thanks for being you.

You are not alone! I feel for you and with you. I had a miscarriage in my 20s between my oldest and youngest. Totally not the same thing you are dealing with. At around the same time I lost my older brother. He was 1 1/2 years older than me. He was killed in a car accident. It devastated our family. I watched my parents hearts and spirits whether. Us three girls and my two sons were the only reason they even tried anymore. I fell into a deep depression. A few years later my mother-in-law was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. After a year of treatments she was cancer free. Unfortunately the radiation caused brain damage. She ended up bedridden with early onset Alzheimer’s. After 6 years of home healthcare (my father-in-law & myself as primary caregivers) she passed away. Three years later my mom developed uterine cancer. My middle sister and myself were primarily caregivers again. You know how this effects a person. This past year I had emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine and two ruptured ulcers. Long story short (lol) I want to recover me. Back before the bad and the depression colored my entire world.

How crazy are we? Not literally but we could be twins from another mother. We are the same age, both have ADD/ADHD, both have chronic pain, we’re both introverts with anxiety, always tried to save my kids from making mistakes, (learned that that is not smart), both love planning… so many similarities. I can totally totally relate babe. Just keep on keeping on and letting it go! 😘

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I have some of my own, but feel free to disregard should they not be helpful currently. I think its important to recognize that happiness is incredibly individual, it looks different for everyone. For you happiness may be about peace and contentment. For me, happiness is about authenticity and care. I spent the vast majority of my life hiding and being hidden, so for me I value stepping out of boxes and living fully and unapologetically. It sounds like you value security and comfort. This doesn't mean that either one of us doesn't care about the other things, and neither priority is wrong, my point here is that there's no formula for happiness that will work for everyone. Another thing I want to mention that a lot of what you talked about felt, to me, like rationalizing depression. I am no professional, but my point with this is that I think it may be helpful for you to see a professional therapist. I know for me it has helped immensely to be able to process with an objective third party, and to get tools and strategies to improve myself and my situation. I truly believe therapy can be a useful tool for anyone. I hope you'll consider it as a part of your journey. I also heard you talk a lot about your adhd and anxiety. Its important to realize that you are more than just those two things. We all are so much more than the sum of our parts. As someone who struggles with chronic depression and anxiety and has adhd that was diagnosed late, I know how easy it is to define ourselves by these things, but its dangerous I think to define ourselves and others by any one thing. I do love how much of this video is a permission slip to yourself to release what you need to release and to be as you are. I love that. I also want to remind you to not only release things but to also invite in what you need in order to thrive, whatever thriving looks like for you. You mentioned multiple times this idea of focusing on what you'll remember on your death bed. To some extent, I love this. Its a great way to release anxiety and it sounds like it's been helpful for you which is amazing and I'm so glad your letting yourself do what is helpful. I would also mention though, to not let this idea of focusing on the wonderful things that will matter later hinder your ability to celebrate and look for the things that matter to you now. You matter just as much now as you will later. I've been writing this while watching and there's so much more I could say but I want to end here with a few gentle reminders for you and for anyone who makes it to the end of this monstrosity of a TH-cam comment. You matter, no more and no less than anyone else. You are worthy, of love and happiness. You are enough, just as you are. All of these things will be true as you change and grow as we all do over time.
Thank you for making space for my thoughts, be sure to make space for your own as well. Best wishes.

Excellent video. I'm in my mid-50's and I'm so much more content with how I view myself and life. It took time but getting there is possible!! And drama is a big no for me. People think everyone wants to die on the same hill and that's so far from reality. I honestly never mind Bumble's version of participating in your planning lol. I had a Yorkie for 15 years and I miss him beyond words. Side note: I have Crohns and titanium in my neck and so on but dang I'm content.

This is a much needed conversation. Perfectionists are often all or nothing. I have also struggled with cleaning my whole life. I have found a system that works for me. But it challenges me not to be perfect. About the socks. I get it. All of my socks are black. Underwear too. It just makes my life easier. There’s a lot of stuff I just don’t do anymore. I donated all of my plates because I don’t want to do dishes. I told my friends that I don’t want to do gift exchanges anymore. How folks respond is not your concern. Maybe you can get a virtual assistant or a manager to take some of these responsibilities off off your plate. Your kids might be perfect for this.

I'm not pressuring myself to get certain things done because it was robbing me of my peace and self esteem. I'm not a horrible person because I'm not perfect. So glad to hear that you're going this route, you'll be so much happier....I know I am.

Wow, I feel like a 33 year old version of you, Mary Ellen. I just went through a divorce this summer and am now a single mom of 2 young boys. Oh, Mama, Let me just say, you are not alone. I feel you. I actually do have Adhd and I am in a icky (health) season right now as well. I am keeping a gratitude journal, and remembering that comparison is the thief of joy...that helps me so much with my icky seasons. Talking it through helps so much. Social media gets very heavy. I am so sensitive to others opinions as well. There is no doubt about that. Sometimes we need a break and to just step away for a moment or day or so if you can. Sending❤❤❤((( hugs))) and so much peace to you.
(Not sure if this is a recent video, I forgot to look at the date. I do hope you are feeling better now.)
I think you're on the right track minimizing things with your lists! I do that too and it helps. You do what you have to do for your mental emotional health your true supporters will understand and if they don't, then they are not your people and you don't need them. As a person with adhd, myself, I don't know how you manage all of this...but I do appreciate your work and thank you for all that you do.
That is such a pretty page, btw!😊

Im a lot like you. "All or nothing" ex. I was watching You Tube and saw a channel on scrapbooking. I went out and bought all kinds of stuff and then tried to make the project, when mine didnt look like or better then the one on YT, I got frustrrated and angry. I didnt do anything again until 6 or 8 months ago.Thats when I got into planning. I started small, with a a9 3 ring binder. I started having fun and found it relaxing and also a place to vent. It became therapy for me. Then I found the Micro mini. I really love the disc and Happy Planner makes an array of planners and the supplies that go with them. Then I decided to get a planner, I found the happy box Finding Your Balance. It was on sale so I didnt spend too much mony. I am waiting for it to arrive. I think its a great place to begin and theraputic as well. Sorry for rambling but I just wanted to let you know that youre not alone. TY again for sharing❤❤❤😊

My Mom taught me “First things first”. You can tell yourself this in every category life gives you. This is why I love brain dumps or “feeling” brain dumps. Brain dumps help with letting go. Also, and especially in the social media arena tell yourself “it’s none of my business what others think about me”. It really helps. Most people are projecting how they feel on to others so they can feel better about themselves. Lastly, happiness comes from within. It’s not all the outer things in the world. I raised a child with extreme ADHD and it was very important to me to teach him that ADHD is not a bad thing. It’s not an excuse either. There’s many wonderful things about a person with ADHD. I built up his self esteem. ADHD people generally have low self esteem. But also know ADHD people are also some of the most intelligent people. They have a lot to offer the world. Just like you who shares your creativity. It’s really important to learn to love who you are and all the wonderful things about yourself. When you become your own best friend you will have your happiness. I adore you MaryEllen! I love your content and you’re my favorite planner babe! It really saddens me to see you struggle because you are so gifted. You are amazing! You are loved by so many! I know I’m a year behind on seeing this but sometimes we still need reminded that we are enough. You are enough and you are a talented wonderful lady! Don’t forget that. ❤

I’m neurodivergent as well and I really felt for a lot of what you said! I really liked your philosophy on happiness and being in a state of contentment. I also liked your thoughts on the self help community and how toxic it can be. I’m already amazing and I don’t need some book to make me a better person lol. We need to shift our perspectives on that because that kind of mindset only makes people with mental illness feel worse about themselves since sometimes we genuinely can’t change our behavior patterns - it’s how our brains are wired and it’s not our fault. Coping isn’t changing completely, it’s learning about ourselves and the way we think and living with it.

All you need to do, is what is best for YOU! Don't worry about posting all the time or being someone you are not. Life is much better when you are just YOU! That's your super power, being YOU!
I suffer from depression, with a very analytical over processing mind. So, chances are I have thought about it way before it happens to the umpth degree. It is extremely exhausting. I am learning to slow down now in my mid 40's and I have decided that "I" would like to do planning and a cleaning routine that fits well with me and who I am.
I have been a hoarder of stuff I love and I have now came to the understanding that though I really love what I am doing, too much stresses me out, so it's got to go.

Over the course of my 62 years I have thought and felt everything you just shared art one time or another. I've also read self-help books, sought out counseling, tried medication, and many other things; and looking back I can say what had helped me the most has been learning that Jesus loves me, not to worry about tomorrow because today has enough worries of it's own, that God prepares those He calls, and especially that His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. These thoughts have pulled me out of very deep despair and healed my heart of brokenness, grief and self-condemnation. I am praying that you will also find comfort in the Scriptures and in the peace and joy that I truly have learned can only be found in Jesus.

I so needed this today. I have an inward battle daily with all these things, saying no being the hardest. At 66, you'd think I'd have it a little more together. Planning for me helps me remember things I need to or want to do. It keeps me more on track than just bumbling through every day not sure what's going on. lol I keep track of where I put things in my planner so if I can't find it I can look and say, yes I cleaned and put it here. OMG! yes it's that bad some days. Part of my fibromyalgia is pain and brain fog. So some days are better than others. You are the first person I search for on you tube! That said, never feel obligated to crank out 7 videos a week. I can't imagine.... peace of mind is terribly important. And I too dislike drama and confrontations. Hate them. Avoid them at all costs. Trying to get better at speaking my mind though.

I, too, feel so overwhelmed right now, I don't even know where to start, where to continue, where to reset, where to regroup, what I could let go, where to let up, where to stop. It's all together in a big bowl that knows no end, essentially bottomless. I have already started saying "no" to things for quite some time, and that has left me with no social life, as those are the things I have been saying no to, what I feel are the only things I can sya no to in this period. It's nice to know I am not the only one, although, it certainly does feel like it sometimes. Again, thank you.

Mary Ellen IMO you are the best planner influencer out there. You are real but dont try to "sell" yourself. You show that planning doesnt have to be perfect but you strive to do your best for those that follow you. I se other planners getting into selling their own products (and that's fine), but i love that you are able to use everyone's products, give honest feedback on those products and do planning with many products in "Mary Ellen Style".
So yes, please give your self grace and permission to let fo if the pressure to "perform". You are amazing. I can identify with all of your "Letting Go" points. I dont know what drana went on the past few weeks, but I can say "You just do you" cause you are doing it beautifully!!
