I know it’s entirely for the sake of the devs’ sanity due to programming being a complicated matter, yet Abathur’s statement of the strains being mutually exclusive seems…improbable? If nothing else, desirable attributes were unquestionable reliable. Raptor Zerglings over Swarmlings? The swarmling’s swift development simply becomes rapid larval production. Can’t have both Hydralisk strains? Turn the creep into an offensive substance! There were applications that, mechanically, wouldn’t be easy to implement yet I feel like opportunities were missed. It’s not even a matter of “complexity bad” so much as improving efficiency, regardless of outcome.
100% it is nothing more than narrative justification for gameplay mechanics. But if we want an in universe explanation, consider this: every single zerg larva contains all the genetic starter material and code necessary to form every zerg unit, building, and upgrade. Larva are spectacularly complex organisms. It is likely that they are the bottleneck for all zerg evolution. Within that larva, it is not merely that the swarmling and raptor strains are mutually exclusive to each other, but also to other adaptations across multiple zerg units and structures. Now, undoubtedly, it could be engineered so that there were larva that could allow swarmlings and larva that could allow raptors on the same battlefield. But now you have taken a single expression of life, zerg, and forked it. The two sides would have to evolve independently. Any point of genetic overlap, like breeding pools, would have to evolve filtration systems to keep the strains separate. In short- the degree of added complexity is much more than it first appears
@@OuterAllianceKerrigan: Explain to me. Why are they exclusive? Abathur: All Zerg, start from larva. Larva makes drone, drone makes hive. Hive starts from larva.
