A can of carb cleaner, $5 rebuild kit, quart of oil, spark plug, a little WD40 and she do just fine. Your video was excellent. The needle valve seat was the main problem but you saved me a lot of trial and error with all those hard to find dirty ports. Thanks again for the assist.
Yeah, these are the things that kill you if you are not familiar with the parts when you work on equipment. One time I could not figure out what was wrong with a mower it kept surging. It had the wrong governor spring that someone else had put on it. Luckily, I had the same engine in the shop, so after a few days of thinking about it I compared the 2 units an noticed the spring was slightly longer. Every time I fix something I learn something new.
This is exactly the same motor that is on an Ariens 5524 I am working on that was left unmaintained and unstarted for 5 yrs. I'll let you know how it goes. Excellent tutorial DW6 and thank you.
Thanks for posting, doublewide6! This was a great help. I have an older Snapper snow blower with a 5hp Tecumseh...got it from my dad a couple years ago. He said it ran ok, but you had to leave the choke on. As I've used it, I've had to leave the choke more and more on, until a couple weeks ago when it wouldn't keep running at all. Took the cover off and first found a rotted off primer hose. (Wasn't sure what that was at first but knew it needed fixing.) Repaired that but no luck. Found your video and removed, disassembled and cleaned the carb, and set the bottom screw as you described. It wasn't even as dirty as the one you showed here, and all of the components looked in good shape. Put it all back together and it started on the second or third pull. Was able t quickly back the choke ALL the way off...idles decent and doesn't stall, has good power all the way up...Hasn't run this good since I've owned it! Thanks again!!
Excellent detailed instructions. Instead of marking the locations with a screwdriver, I just took pictures on my phone before taking anything apart. Makes putting it back together much easier. :) Anyway when I took off the bowl, everything was covered in disgusting gunk, and the float hinge was seized. I had no idea how I was going to get the pin off. The float itself would only move with considerable force and I almost broke it trying to get it off. So googled up carb rebuild kits, and Amazon had a complete replacement carb for under $15! That's barely more than the cost of the carb cleaner. If you need to replace parts, definitely to see if you can just replace the whole carb.
Hey, I understand now. My snowblower is problem with shorty running... When it started and few minutes later it stopped so much..Good show to me for how to. I did check the carburetor and noticed small spring loose.. My snowblower is MTD.. 7 HP..Thats mean need clean and check needle if good... Thanks for show! You are very good explains.
I have a no start issue with my Troy Built 5.5 Horsepower Two-Stage Snow Thrower 5524 Storm Tecumseh for Snow King. I've only used it 3 times since it's purchase in 2007. I think using some gas I stored since last year may be an issue. Your step by step video gives me some hope of getting it up and running, Great instructions and you are an excellent tutor. Much appreciated.
Thanks for commenting. PLEASE comment back as to how you make out. You have about a 90% chance of fixing it by following the video. If not let me know and I will assist you.
Great vid. I have a Poulan that's been sitting for 3 years or so. I can't get it to turn over. I will use your video as a guide to remove and clean the carb. Hope it works...I only have about 15 hours on my unit. Thanks!!!
I have the 8hp version of this snowthrower and I have to leave the choke on full for it to run so this video helped out tremendously !!!! Thanks !!! Now to get out there in the cold and get her cleaned up !!!!!!!
I did a "quick" fix by just removing the main jet and cleaning the bowl and jet. I sprayed down the entire outter carb with degreaser and put it all back together. It started right up on the third pull and I've never been able to pull start it before. I'm going to tear the entire carb off come summer and do the proper cleaning like you show here, as long as it keeps running like it did today !! THANKS FOR GREAT VIDEO !!! I'LL BE BACK TO WATCH IT AGAIN COME SUMMER !!!!!!!
+Calvin Lee I always put an inline gas filter on all my small engines, the thing that is in the gas tank that the manufacturer passes of as a gas filter doesn't work very well and installing a tiny inline gas filter that costs about $3 will end your dirt problems in your carb. from dirty gas.
Thanks Bro,great video. My blower was not working and I was just about to take it in to get looked at then I watched your video and got her started up again and running fine. Appreciate it. Good job. Paul.
They need tweaking because they stay off for so long, people do not winterize them and they will not start. I have replaced a few cracked plastic elbows.
Great video. Not only the disassembly, but the reassembly aswell. Sometimes I'm great at pulling apart, not so much with putting back together. I have this exact same machine. Any idea where I can easily find replacement parts for it? Thanks again!!
just wanted to let u know it was a great video...thank you...very simple and detailed... Time for me to go get a used snow blower...am hoping under 100 bucks....
I was having a problem with my blower staying running. I found your tune up and gave it a try. Well after viewing I used your advise and it was easy to do. Thanks, Question, can I ad an electric start to my manual pull start? email me please.
Excellent video! I've been working on my Ariens snow blower with a Tecumseh engine which revs up and down constantly. I may have to pull the carb and do what you did to make it right. Subbed!
Good video, I have an old late 70's early 80's, 20" 5HP Tecumseh Sno Trak. did the same thing with a carb kit, changed the float, pin and as well pin seat. The float adjustment is as well something to look at to get proper adjustment, you got lucky by just throwing it back in. The darndest thing was to get a proper well sealing gasket on the bottom float bowl pin. Did all gaskets and everything while I was there for $12.00 CDN. runs like a champ but did not know about the atmospheric port. What does it do? Also, if it doesn't start, did you check for spark first? If not, I would think that would be a used machine deal breaker?
Doublewide6. Followed your instructional video, step by step and our Troy Built 5.5 Horsepower Two-Stage Snow Thrower 5524 Storm Tecumseh for Snow King is up and running! The carburetor bowl had crystalized amber colored tar in it. So we completely flushed it out with CRC carb cleaner. Drained the stale fuel from the tank; changed the fouled spark plug. I am now running it to heat up the oil, for a clean oil change.Thank you very much and all the best and Merry Christmas from our family to yours.
Yeah, you will pull your hair out when people mess with them. I've learned my lesson and I will not buy a piece of equipment if people have messed with them or if it is partially disassembled. They inevitably loose parts and mess stuff up and it costs more money and time than you expect.
I have a question regarding 2 Tecumseh powered items I have. One is our Toro 521 (HS50) and the other being a Yard Machines front tine tiller (OHH55 without carb adjuster screw). They both have the same issue with fuel spewing out of the carb throat. Will drain the gas tank overnight (OHH55 doesn't have fuel shutoff). The OHH55 runs pretty good except for spewing fuel, but the HS50 currently doesn't run. I have already purchased and installed a new float and rebuild kit on the HS50, and yes, it has spark. Still has the same issue even after rebuild. It also has never idled, even with all sorts of adjustments. Any insight? I'm to the point where I'm ready to go ahead and purchase a complete used engine for the Toro (also needs primer hose due to multiple holes and now a recoil housing which pulled right off of the engine on me the last time I tried to start the engine), and I'm not sure what to do about the tiller... I have to say that these Tecumseh engines are a real headache... Our other tiller is just as old as the Toro, has a Briggs engine, and would run just fine if I were to replace the starting rope...
ive have a quick question for you right where the needle goes into the body that is connected to the float is there any at the bottom of the body that the needle rests on???? i found something that looks like a gasket that is round but im not sure if it is just varnish build up or a real gasket. thanks for your input on the video great job
The needle sits on the float tab connected by the pin. The tip of the needle seats in the seat which looks like a small doughnut that is in the bottom of the tube that the needle goes in. You may have blown it out with compressed air. Make sure the seat is placed back in or all you fuel will drain out the carb.
I know it's an older video and I have seen this one before when I had a problem with my engine but did you know that the augers were rotating when you first started it ?
The white stuff are oxides from water contamination in the gas. Find a non oxy only pump. NOT a combo pump. Also drain the fuel out after the season since snow is made out of water and water can Ingress through the breather into the fuel tank corrupting the system all over again.
Snow blower carburators seem to operate a little rich. If its really cold and you crank the engine a lot before it starts, or it never starts,, it can send unburnt fuel into the cylinder where it washes the thin film of oil off of the cylinder wall,,, that is where you loose compression. That same fuel can get down into the crankcase oil and dilute it making it harder for your engine to have usefull compression. My late 80s JD 524 walk behind has a newer mid 2000s Tecumseh 7hp snow blower engine on it. Several times it has not started for me and after changing the oil it started right up. I removed the drain plug on one side and installed threaded pipe that goes out to a "T". From the "T" I have another straight piece of pipe going down between the frame and one drive tire. Changing the oil is easier now. Also avoid gas with ethanol.
First time I seen the atomistic hole before I just ran out side and checked my old MTD 6 hp that has not run for 3 years . All that was wrong was that part was clogged . Thanks I have a gravel drive way and it was my back up snow blower as I have a 33 inch 20hp moster that I use for it .
HEY DW6.thanks for all the vids man.i got tecumseh engine, changed points, condenser, coil, and flywheel and still no spark,,rechecked all 3 times, how do i ground it ? i think thats the problem??? can u PLZ HELP AM PRETTY FLUSTERD
I have always been taught to run fuel out of unit before storing. Been doing this practice for 20+ years and never had a problem. Correct new spark plug and oil change and ready to go with one pull. Pulled the bowel off of 2 cycle tecumseh Ariens and bowel looked brand new. My Ariens has a filter in tank. Looks like someone tried to fix leaky bowel because of bad float pin and teflon got sucked into main jet and then lost adjustment screw. What a nightmare ! Who let the DOGS out !
hi- i have same carb on my blower-- my problem is im not getting gas. the gas is getting to the bowl- but no gas getting to the spark plug. i tried everything and can figure it out. any ideas??
Hi ,have a troy bilt 9528 that I followed video an rebuilt carb because it would not start, now it starts but it will not stay started, starts from anywhere from 10- 30 seconds then dies out,PLZ help
i have the same murray snow blower model G2250030, do you have the links and the carb. model number as where I can order a replacement carb. for this snow plower?
I have a snowblower same kind of engine that starts fine. But, when it warms up it just stops running. It's like the switch was turned off or it ran out of gas. If I prime it and turn it over it starts right away. It runs great at both high and low speeds when it's running. Ant Idea What It Might Be That Would Cause That? Could ie be a bad exhaust valaue?

Nice Job straight up with no BS Bravo!!!
Wow, I've done 100's of these Tecumsehs and I have never seen anyone file down the tip of the needle.
Nice clear video man, good job

thanks for your answer about the elbow, are they a press fit or glued? I think i read some where that they don't screw in
Simple to do just press fit the elbow.
I know it's an older video and I have seen this one before when I had a problem with my engine but did you know that the augers were rotating when you first started it ?

I didn't say "every" or try to imply that.
If I use nothing but Non Ethanol fuel does that avoid the whole problem of cleaning the carb?
+Mick Taylor should help. if you get dirt in your gas it could clog it.
+Mick Taylor should help. if you get dirt in your gas it could clog it.
great job you make it look simple
Great job and nice video. Thank you.
Alberto Silva Happy it helped.
Take a picture of the linkage with a digital camera it's a lot easier to see than a scratch.
Take a picture of everything as it is before you take it apart. It will make putting it back together much easier.

I did notice the governor moves very little and think the spring might have been over stretched
Thank you doublewide6. Will do. Very much appreciated and all the best.

sounds like the gas cap is not venting. Loosen the cap see if that helps.
WOW! What a great demo! Thanks a million.

hi i have a craftsman snowblower 5.5 hp tecumseh motor on it i was wonder how would i look up the the carb number for it so i could buy a new one for mine
find the model number on the craftsman sticker on the engine shroud. go to sears parts direct and type in the model number. Then go to ebay and buy the carb.
ok thank you for your help
If you need help, just let me know.
ok thank you
Q
Thanks, for the video.
cleaned carb still no go. Sparkplug is new¸oil is old but level is fine. any other idea?
Check for spark, if you have spark put a teaspoon of gas in sparkplug hole reinsert sparkplug and try to start.
doublewide6
thanks alot! with fuel un socket i got my first 3 explosions of the year. Tweaked the adjustement screw a few time and it finally started. thank you so much i was about to giveup.
Search the engine Model number (Mower tvs90) and Carburetor on eBay and u may find one for 15$ or less. Whole carb with bolts and gaskets Float everything.
GD video learn a whole lot.....thanks
I wish they put air filters on snowblowers. lol. I bought one at an auction and there's no air filter like this one.
OMG! or as we used to say, "Eureka!"
This engine and most of the blower looks identical to a Toro 521 I just bought.
Awesome !
he marked 2 holes on the carb..?
59 haters are all "JEALOUS"
wow
I HAVE SUBSCRIED
1:05 ABOUT A WEEK AGO
There’s no such thing as a fulcrum pin it’s a float pin
I don't think there's a snow blower near me for about 400 miles.
DesertDigger1 Good thing you watched the video in case one shows up at your door. The hard part is going to be selling it.
+doublewide6
what do I do if my blower only starts with starting fluid
