just rode this trail for the first time last weekend. it's much faster than it looks on this video, and the climb was loopable for non ebike riders depending on your fitness. probably one of the best flow trails in oc.
Agreed. I'd go as far to add that it may be a bit on the advanced side? There are some good 2 feet drops on a pretty steep angle of descent; landing into some nasty ruts/roots.
when I first discovered it in 2007, I rode up the DH. I had just moved from Salida Colorado so I had stamina but damn looking back it was crazy dangerous..
Thanks Sri! My wrist and hand are healed up enough for me to set up the lighting again. 😆 And yeah! Creeping up on 4K...I'm watching that number hoping to hit 4K before the end of 2019. 🤞🏽
Come join our May challenge. I want to watch a few more videos of people riding the Luge. I doubt I am at the level where I can give you any riding pointers.
What trail do you reccomend in soCal that is one or two steps skill-wise below this course that I can practice on so I can work up to this one??? I want to work on tight lines just without the steep cliffs right now🤣
Well...I'd suggest The Luge. Ha! Nothing gets you used to exposure like exposure to exposure. Just take it easy and work on keeping your eyes further down the trail (not looking off into the exposure). Also work on controlling your speed and keeping it consistent. The biggest danger on trails like that is getting too much speed and then trying to slow down too fast and then skidding. Hope that helps!
It’s actually good for the suspension. And as far as hydraulics, it should be a closed system so if changing bike orientation affects the amount of air in the system, there is something wrong. Also, if you are servicing the bike regularly, there’s no real long term factors at play. Hope that helps! 🤘🏽
Great vid, i have yet to try the luge. Will try it once the rain clears up and trail is dry but will take it slow since I'm no expert. Keep on riding 🤙
Right on! The Luge is definitely a fun trail if you're willing to make the climb. I think it's actually already running pretty good based on what The Outsider MTB posted on his Instagram. 👍🏽
Not sure. The hand still can’t handle any kinna chunder or hits. Could barely handle Arrow at Skypark last weekend. Got the OTS working on the issues though. 👍🏽
Alright what does “full-pull” mean? I tried looking it up with no luck. Thanks for the videos btw. I’m a new mtb rider and love seeing what’s good out there besides what I have in my backyard.
The first part from Cook's Corner on the road is pretty gross. Once you're on the dirt, it gets better. I don't know how much pedaling fitness you have, but once you're past the road climb, there are several good places to take breaks and enjoy the views and just being outside. Also MTB Project has the full loop if you wanna look at the grades, etc. www.mtbproject.com/trail/7004137/the-luge-loop Hope that helps.
You can shuttle to the gate to cut out the road part of the climb. But there's nowhere to park up there. Closest place to park a truck up top is near the bottom of Modjeska Grade Road.
Great question! MTB Project rates The Luge as a Black, but I think it depends on how fast you ride it. It is a great trail because can be fun for anybody who is at least beginner/intermediate. And people have a blast on that trail on all types of mountain bikes new and old. The climb is probably the biggest challenge for beginners. It's a pretty mellow climb except for a couple spots. Search for "The Luge Loop Portola Hills" on MTB Project. 👍🏽
Not trying to nit pick you. For anybody when asking for feedback or opinions on lets say "what is better"? What is the criteria? I could assume that asking what is the better line you may be wanting to know what people think is the fastest line or smoothest line or funniest line. But even those descriptions are subjective. Allen I challenge you to determine what is "best" for you for what ever you are looking for. Stop and session sections. Watch others and try there lines but really it all comes down to are you having fun regardless of what others are doing. To improve your skills you need to try it all and in every way you can imagine. You will notice when watching great riders riding together they rarely take the same lines or ride a trail in the same way.
💯 I agree. I love my Bronson and am considering the Megatower for my next bike. My wife has the 2020 Bronson and loves it too. I also dig how active Santa Cruz Bicycles is in supporting their local community and trails. 🤘🏽
Thanks Victor! I wish I were hitting this hard already. This is from last spring during The Path Bike Shop’s huge bike demo. But thanks anyway! That was one of the best pulls on The Luge I’d done!
This trail is WHY I bought a mountain bike. Doesn't get any better than this! ;)
Nicely done. I live right around the corner. Seen a-LOT of the Luge on TH-cam. Nice speed!
🤘🏾
That bike is insaneee
The Bronson kicks butt!

I’m curious about looping the climb. What’s your route?
Agreed. I'd go as far to add that it may be a bit on the advanced side? There are some good 2 feet drops on a pretty steep angle of descent; landing into some nasty ruts/roots.
@MTB ALAN I'm thinking; I need to offer a shuttle service from Cooks Corner to the entrance of Santiago Truck Trail.
@@skiMTB I'd be interested!
honestly, the Kuge is just a beginner black diamond flowy trail
🤘🏾
Sick broo 🤘
🤘🏾
You should hit up palmdale mtb trails
🤘🏾 thanks for the suggestion!
You Fast!
🙏🏾
when I first discovered it in 2007, I rode up the DH. I had just moved from Salida Colorado so I had stamina but damn looking back it was crazy dangerous..
LOL!
Nice run man, love it up there when its green.
🤘🏾
Heading there tomorrow for maiden voyage, thx for helping me prep!
Yew! No worries.
Sweet ride! I just went down it for the first time at the A1 RideDazes event last week. Just after the rain(s). It was EPIC!
🤘🏾
Make a trip up to Kernville. The Cannelle Plunge! 28 mile trail last 8 miles you drop 5000 feet. Just Outstanding also
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@mtb_alan Have you ridden Palm Canyon? Wait till October!
I did the PCE a couple years ago during one of the spring super blooms. Gorgeous.
Flying, excellent
🚀🤘🏽
Whoa didn't kno Trabuco canyon had this! Yeah go buddy!
Yew! Oh yeah...you gotta hit it.
This trail is so much fun but so painful on your hands at the same time
I feel you. Less brakes makes it less painful on the hands…but can make it more painful everywhere else. 😆
@@mtb_alan yeah I went slow and it probably wasn't as bad, but my legs felt it a lot more probably.
🤘🏾
Your flyin down this trail. I would of feel off the side or i would go slow cuz of the exposure to one side
🤘🏾😆
Good to see back in the trail.
Thanks! 🤘🏽
Wow! I've never seen the Luge so green and lush before.
🤘🏾
I got to venture north and check out this trail!
Sunglass Rob do it! 🤘🏾
you should try skiing or snowboarding at snow summit ;)
Used to do it. But it interferes with riding all the great SoCal winter conditions. 😆 Still got all my boarding gear tho. 🤔
@@mtb_alan snowboarding is good for the soul. Just like riding bikes.
Good stuff bud! Can't believe how green it is!
Yeah man! Remember all dem purty flowers? 😍
Fast and smooth 💥🤙
🙏🏾
this trail looks incredible!!!! Awesome riding, too!
The Luge is definitely an experience and the views on the way up and down are great! Thanks!
Hey Alan, I enjoy your vids!
Thanks!
Wow you really stepped up the production in your intro! Almost at 4000 subscribers!!!
Thanks Sri! My wrist and hand are healed up enough for me to set up the lighting again. 😆 And yeah! Creeping up on 4K...I'm watching that number hoping to hit 4K before the end of 2019. 🤞🏽
New Sub, you killed it! 🤟
Thanks for subscribing!
Aw yeahhh! Someone APPLAUD this man!
Hee hee! Hi Barbara!
Sweet!!!!!!
Yew!
This is a fun descent. Just be careful with no common sense runners likes to go up on this trails. They’re just absolutely no brains.
Yikes!
yo, people climb the luge? 😳😳 that's just asking for trouble.
Come join our May challenge. I want to watch a few more videos of people riding the Luge. I doubt I am at the level where I can give you any riding pointers.
Sounds cool. I was just thinking about hitting the Loogies!
@@mtb_alan I can't wait to see what you come up with.
I've ridden that once before, but damn that was fast! Nice 👍
🤘🏾
Great job bro. Love the style of content.
🙏🏽
Wow.... So much green after the rain. Great footage. Love your intro music.
Thanks! Do know that this is from last spring. Might still be brown out there but the dirt should be just as good. 👌🏽 Glad you dig the intro beats!
Riding in the sunshine, in Bham I forgot what that's like lol. Looking good I love that kind of trail.
Oh man, I feel for you. Hope you get some sun soon! The Luge is such a blast!
Hey Alan! Going to run this for the first time this week! Do you park at cooks corner? Thanks brotha 🤙
Yup! Should be in prime condition. 🤘🏾
Sweet!!
Smoked it bro! Fuck yea!
Yew! 🤘🏽

@@mtb_alan okay sounds good. I'll take a trip up there in the next 2 weeks. (I'm in San Diego)...going to lake Hodges today if you have ever been!
Is hanging bikes bad I saw intro background. Doesn't it do stuff to the hydraulics overtime?
It’s actually good for the suspension. And as far as hydraulics, it should be a closed system so if changing bike orientation affects the amount of air in the system, there is something wrong.
Also, if you are servicing the bike regularly, there’s no real long term factors at play.

I hang mine, no problems.
Had confidence in you until I saw the mustache. Lol
Your confidence is brittle.
his mustache is built upon confidence, guess you just don't know what's up? lol

Not sure. The hand still can’t handle any kinna chunder or hits. Could barely handle Arrow at Skypark last weekend. Got the OTS working on the issues though. 👍🏽
@@mtb_alan do that therapy man 👍👍. My upper body is still a bit weak, but it is coming back. Your wrist will too 🤙🤙
Cool video man! Have you ever ridden at Sycamore Canyon in riverside. It would be a cool place to do a video.
Thanks man! I used to ride Sycamore Canyon. Fun place. I have an old vid there that concentrates on The Plunge.
Alright what does “full-pull” mean? I tried looking it up with no luck. Thanks for the videos btw. I’m a new mtb rider and love seeing what’s good out there besides what I have in my backyard.
My pleasure! Full-pull in MTB means a non-stop run from the top of a descent to the bottom. And in TH-cam terms, it’s an uncut video of that run. 👍🏽
How difficult is the climb for this trail? I'm not the strongest climber so I'm hesitant to give it a try
The first part from Cook's Corner on the road is pretty gross. Once you're on the dirt, it gets better. I don't know how much pedaling fitness you have, but once you're past the road climb, there are several good places to take breaks and enjoy the views and just being outside.

There definitely are worse. Just find a gear and crank.
only way to become a better climber is to climb, just go for it, you won't regret it.
How many times have you been down this? You took it pretty well.
homeskillet64 thanks! I think I had hit it a couple times at the point when I filmed this.
Man, you were hauling butt for a demo ride! 😮
That place looks like a blast. Think I’m going to have to make the drive one of these days.
Ha! Thanks Ian. I definitely felt right at home on the Bronson. And yeah, The Luge is a blast! 🤘🏽
Part of a loop meaning no way to shuttle to the top? 😔
You can shuttle to the gate to cut out the road part of the climb. But there's nowhere to park up there. Closest place to park a truck up top is near the bottom of Modjeska Grade Road.
Getting through your videos. Talk about making a recovery! Look at you go! I hope I'm still able to do this.
Thanks! To be fair though, this run on The Luge was before I injured my wrist. Sorry if that was unclear.
i clicked on this so fast
LOL! 🤘🏽
What skill level is needed to ride this? It looks like a black diamond type of run...
Great question! MTB Project rates The Luge as a Black, but I think it depends on how fast you ride it. It is a great trail because can be fun for anybody who is at least beginner/intermediate. And people have a blast on that trail on all types of mountain bikes new and old.

Of course it's subjective, Duane. That's kinna the point. I already know what I think. I am interested in hearing what others think.
Las bicis santa cruz son la mejores Yo tengo dos santa cruz una Megatower y la otra es hightower.. son super para el desenso . Peace amigo ✌🏻

Dude you are killing it with just coming back from a major set back. Awesome pull Alan.
Thanks Victor! I wish I were hitting this hard already. This is from last spring during The Path Bike Shop’s huge bike demo. But thanks anyway! That was one of the best pulls on The Luge I’d done!
