    Being outside of the US, in a country with just 2 official dealerships, having bought my first HD after years of wanting one, running into my first problems with it, being what i have narrowed down to an intake leak - your videos are simply gold!
    You're a very skilled mechanic and the way you explain things is really great, you're a perfectionist in the best way possible.
    I'm sure your students are proud of being taught by you.
    Thank you for this free content.
    I'm currently waiting for my gaskets for my 1200 EVO.
    I'll report back after i've done the job.

      @@How2Wrench After doing the intake seals change, realigning the manifold using the airfilter backing plate with hollow breather bolts, tightening everything down as much as i could, removed airfilter again, finished tightening - reinstalled, i still have like a 1% leak on the rear cylinder, its nothing compared to what i had before, but its there - the only thing i could think of, would be me cleaning the surface insufficient, the old gaskets were there for maybe 10 years and were hard to remove, there was a bit of residue rubber, i scarped as much as i could with a razor - should i apply grease - or go with oversize gaskets from j.james?

    Thanks Shane, that was some great info. I've been fighting an intake cough for quite sometime on my 92 FXR-LR and finally figured out it was my intake seals. I replaced the seals, but didn't clean up the intake and it helped, but I was still having problems. I sprayed the seal area with some WD-40 and it cleared up till the WD-40 dried. Now that I watched your video I've bought some more seals and am looking forward to fixing it right the second time. Thanks again for the tip.

    Just bought a 2001 1200 sportster, I was told it had been dropped but fixed. I'm thinking it was dropped off a building, I just found out that the intake manifold is cracked on the carburetor side at 7 o'clock. I can see shiny metal on both sides of the intake going into the cylinders, I'm thinking the cylinders may have moved when they dropped it. It was fine until I put a chrome carb top on it, now when I decelerate, it Pops and sputters. You described the symptoms perfectly halfway through this video. Thanks, I'm changing it out this weekend.

    Great video , I think it will help me do the compliance fittings. I have an old EVO with a bendix shovel head butterfly carburetor. My fuel inlet is cracked , losing fuel got to fix that too. Fun times
    .

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Find a used Ram Jett solid intake manifold on Ebay. The old Evo intakes with rubber boots are garbage and the later seal ring intakes exist for MoCo assembly line convenience. I threw my new 1988 stock intake in the trash when I bought the bike (I already psychotically hated carb boots from years of wrenching other brands) and that Ram Jett ran for thirty years of use until I replaced the (still good) original engine with an S&S.
      Ram Jetts don't need a carb brace even with a Super B hanging off them. You'll have to make gaskets (gray auto store gasket paper) and source some Allen bolts to replace the original 12 point fasteners which are always missing. No big deal and you'll likely need to narrow the bolt heads slightly (bench grinder, flap disc on angle grinder, spin bolt with a hand drill) to clear the casting on the narrow side. It's totally worth it and I've lifted my engine using a soft sling around the intake! Try THAT with a stock intake.
      The "E" stamped intakes are fine for the smaller butterfly carbs be they Bendix or Keihin. (If you ever replace the carb go with a CV and a flanged adapter kit.) If you need more info my nick is farmall on Chop Cult.

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also BTW the stock early Evo carb is a butterfly Keihin but a Bendix will bolt on. Even the first Shovelhead FXRs came with butterfly Keihins (per the factory parts book in my hand, not memory). You can improve those with the Andrews (extinct but repops exist since there are a gazillion Keihins) accelerator pump cover with the internal check ball instead of the stock no check ball emissions version, if your pump cover rattles it has the ball), and a rejet (low speed and main, not just main). A 60 thru 80 drill bit set is perfect (and less than ten bucks) for drilling low speed jets. We checked the lowest number drill bit shank (not the fluted end) that was a slip fit and went up one drill size, test rode and did a plug chop, then let it be (stock engine) or increased if needed due to cam etc. I liked the butterfly on my stock engine, and the rejet runs noticeably cooler (they were lean due to emissions regs) than stock while improving acceleration noticeably. I also removed the choke plate for better airflow since I didn't need it after the rejet and pump mod, but it doesn't get cold in South Carolina.

    Sometimes backfiring is unburnt fuel mixing with the hot air in the muffler n pinging is the wrong fuel just from what ive learnt.

    Great video man - Great to know, before I finish repairing / re-building my 2011 103 ci FLHTK (Electra Glide Ultra Limited) with 33,000 miles.
    I have a couple questions if anyone would be so kind to help. I dis-assembled my bike because I was getting a Top End Rattle / Chattering noise / sound especially on cold starts - the bike did sound like it was sucking too much air from the breather area at times. When I took the bike apart, I found major amounts of carbon build up on the top of Piston, Combustion Chamber, Valves, ACR, Gaskets. The rest of the engine looked good. (1) I guess my question is could the intake manifold sucking un filtered air, over long periods cause this mess?
    I'm finding that the cost of tools for the bike top end rebuild is costing quite a bit of money, are there any tool rental places for a Top end Rebuilds, and Crank ( 2.)
    My question is to anyone out there that may know, 3. My Crankcase has been exposed to the elements for a couple weeks now, I never covered it up. My 3rd and last question is can the Crankcase be flushed out without removing it from the bike with like WD-40 or new cheaper oil or should I just take that out too and do it that way? I know I have some bugs and shit in there now and possibly will clog my oil pump and stuff. I know, my bad!
    Thanks in advance!

      I bought a Road King new in 2000 now 26000 miles.
      I just found out that Harley changed the cam plate and I'm wanting the hydraulic tensioner on my bike.
      The only problem is (I'm wondering) if I should put the money into it being how Harley built the flywheel?
      It should have a new cams and bearings while inside the engine and that runs into money for tools so the job could cost 2000 or more.
      It runs ok now but what about later.

    Snap on makes torque bars for torque wrenches and most times you leave the jugs only parially tight so the can be adjusted to the intake.

    Shane, I have a question about the intake cleaning.
    I used 800 Emery paper to clean the intake manifold to good effect.
    I've noticed a rough brown ring at the intake port of my 92 EVO engine.
    Do I need to clean that? If so what should I use, I'm a little concerned about using sand paper in that area. I've tried Xlylene and carb cleaner, but it doesn't seem very effective.

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the ring is just discolored and not gouged you should be OK. I use a scotch brite pad to clean mine.

However, doing these jobs with the engine removed and on a workbench is quite different from doing it with the engine in the bike and the gas tank in place.I really appreciate all your videos, even though I have a 1989 Low rider, and some of your videos don't apply to a bike that old.Again, I am sorry for being brash.
