    No no no... the "Toxic Waltz" was never a dance craze back in the day. You have to understand a couple of things. First, Exodus were known to have exceptionally violent pits at their shows. The other thing is that Exodus' lyrics are often dripping with sarcasm and/or irony, so this is a combination of those two facts. They are poking fun at all the "dance craze" crazes from the past, while paying homage to their insane live shows. But it's totally tongue-in-cheek, please don't think that metalheads were ever so lame as to go out to a club to do a dance called the Toxic Waltz! Never happened, you have it all wrong! Bad first Exodus song to listen to... Should have gone with something like Blacklist or Only Death Decides.

      This is absolutely correct, it was meant to be cheesy & sarcastic. They were making light of these "dance craze" songs.

    This song was meant to be sarcastic. It’s metal satire, they were joking with the lyrics 😂

  • @mijaba
    @mijaba 7 ปีที่แล้ว +199

    I think it was meant to be a little "sarcastic"-- since thrash isn't exactly "dance music" and moshing isn't exactly "dancing"---
    Think of it as a joke of sorts.

    • @jannee1403
      @jannee1403 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Mikael Åkerfeldt uses growling appropiately, tastefully and you can even hear the words, which can't be said for many other growlers. Ghost of Perdition, Deliverance or The Moor are great entrypoints, now that you've already been exposed to "extreme" metal. Opeth is untamed yet refined, combining brutality with serenity interwoven by by-the-book transitions. Check them out!

  • @jhalkiasdura
    @jhalkiasdura 7 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    This brand of thrash is supposed to be the "silly" and "party" type of metal. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and they wrote lyrics with that mentality. You've got bands that built their entire career on songs about drinking beer lmao (Tankard). Trust me, it makes sense when you're 6 beers deep and you're sweating your ass off at a live show. These are songs written for and by the club scene in the 80's. These guys were as much fans of it as they were musicians.
    I mean tbh I don't think anyone has ever listened to Exodus for their poetry lol. It's all about the guitars. As far as the song being dated (1989 btw), it's the production, not really the music imo. Yeah it screams 80's but that's part of the charm.
    You guys got one part of that wrong though. It wasn't just about "then". That's the thing with metal fans, especially thrash fans, whether a song is from 1984 or 2017, we don't care as long as the RIFFS are there. If you go to an Exodus show today the pit still explodes when Toxic Waltz hits. I'm just going to leave this here (2013): th-cam.com/video/P0G0pQ1SMLg/w-d-xo.html
    Anyway, great reaction as always, keep it up guys!

This song can still generate a mosh pit of the highest caliber to this day. Exodus was so influential on the thrash/speed metal scene and this is one of the reasons.

      As much as I love Dio and all his work in all those bands I will have to say nay. It just does not stand up in today's time. Put on Neil Young or Pink Floyd and it's still great today. Very few bands from the 80's sound good today.

  • @ChrisA2617
    @ChrisA2617 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I gotta say, I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos. As with many of the other vids, you're totally bang on for this song. I think what a lot of metal heads (and I'm sure other genres too) can't realize is that a lot of the classic songs that they grew up with, and as you said, are close to their heart, just haven't aged well and are difficult to get into today for new listeners due to either the cheeziness, the bad lyrics or the actual production. Exodus are a classic thrash band that helped shape the genre and even though they have a cheese element to some of their older songs, you guys were still able to pick out the great guitar playing courtesy of Gary Holt (who is the lead guitarist and main songwriter who in fact now plays for Slayer as well. ). Keep up the amazing work. I'd love to hear a reaction to any song off of Death's album Symbolic or Kreator's album Enemy Of God. Hopefully other people have mentioned it!

    Lyrically alot of mid level metal bands struggle. They have the players but not the writers. So you will find with bands like Exodus or savatage and a list of bands that's very long you will like the music and talent but the body of the lyrics will come off cheesy or just not as epic as the song behind the words.

    • @JLandroid
      @JLandroid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Definitely agree with this comment. There are alot of metal bands that just don't quite hit that elite level. Just like in any genre really, but mid-tiered metal bands may have more trouble due to the niche-like nature of the genre.

      Today's Exodus has some of the best lyrics out there:
      "Illuminati of the one percent
      We chase their carrot on a string
      Wall street deceit all stuck on repeat
      Peons serving to the kings
      To them it's all just a natural selection
      A birth right of gluttony
      Like a kind of Immaculate Conception
      Of inbred conformity"

    Good evening, Brothas. Thank you for checking out this song, and evaluating the music... AND the lyrics. In my opinion, this song pretty much DEFINES Heavy Metal in general... or at least how Metal affects its audience. It basically explains the meaning of Metal moshpits.
    It's a great song to learn how to play, and pretty much one of Exodus's greatest marks in the '80's. In 2013, my friends bought me a ticket to see Exodus and Anthrax in San Francisco, former guitarist Rick Hunolt swung by to play with the band at the end of their show, and I acted the damn fool up in that moshpit. Tossing crazy-ass White boys around like sacks of potatoes in that moshpit was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life.
    Thank you Brothas! Please keep it coming.

      We should really really get behind Across the Rainbow Bridge or Where Silent Gods Stand Still. There is not a shred of a chance they will not like those songs (LYRICS MUST BE READ), but pick the wrong song and Amon Amarth will be on the shitlist, when it's one of the bands I think they would really get into. The metalhead elite have to get together and work on getting the best possible example from a band they're recommending to these guys. Taking into account Ryan and George's tastes would be a big plus too.

    I check in every day because I cannot wait to see what the next song you guys chose to review. That said, this was a bad choice for an Exodus song. And of course, it was collectively OUR bad choice as this is what the people voted on.
    A little background information on Exodus for you guys: One of Exodus's founding members is Kirk Hammett of Metallica! And one of the other early members, Gary Holt, is one of the most talented lead guitarists in heavy metal period! Holt is also now playing with Slayer after the untimely death of Jeff Hanneman (R.I.P.) . OK so to give Exodus a PROPER real review , may I recommend "Forward March" from the later period or "Fabulous Disaster" from the earlier "toxic waltz" days. These songs better represent the shredding skills that Exodus is so well known for. Thanks guys! Keep up the awesome job!
