I blew £399 on a Panasonic 3do. Need for speed was a bit of a gem, but the 3do standard, supposedly designed to be cross manufacturers, didn't take off. I think it's still in the loft. Great show, thanks 👍
Hi Jason & Suzi my father is in his 70s he still loves the Xbox kinect he plays nearly every weekend he plays the bowling game he still loves it & i believes it still has that retro gamer fun to it please rethink the kinect as a fun peace of kit still. we love the show keep up the good content Gadget show OGs forever.
Jason was spot on with his box art comment.. I bought so many C64 and Amiga games based on the box art (especially games by Psygnosis).. Ultimately I think the Jag failed because the PlayStation was coming only a year or so later. I remember walking into a branch of Comet in 95 and being blown away by Wipeout..

I've recently started vlogging all of my retro repairs on my youtube channel. To date, I've repaired and restored a Sega Mega Drive, a Famicom and currently working on repairing and restoring an Atari 2600. It's worrying the amount of youngsters these days that don't even know how to replace a fuse in a plug.
South Park made an episode calling out the lack of basic repair skills these days. There's people who can't put together flat pack furniture, I don't know hey they get through life

The Saturn was an S Tier console with amazing games. Panzer Dragoon Saga - one of the last games released - should be regarded more widely as one of the best video games ever made. The ability to play Sega Rally and Virtual Fighter at home, Nights and Burning Rangers. Fighters Megamix, for crying out loud! And people forget: Tomb Raider was a Saturn Exclusive for two weeks!
Hiya Gang! I made games for the Saturn (Tomb Raider, Swag Man, Blam Machine Head) and really enjoyed playing them too, its blend of 2D and 3D capabilities was great for the time, it even had hardware playfields like the older 16-bit consoles. Its range of game titles was very strong and they were pretty arcade accurate.
I still have an original Pebble from the kickstarter launch😊along with two others black and red. Just loved it but Jase is right it definitely paved the way.
could see gopros implementing runway ai type tech, changing the environment you're in, making things look like a painting or whatever, like the stuff we are seeing with what the tool can do with video games right now. Cos yeah, 8k to 16k to 32k is all a bit silly when 4k is almost the max we can visually see.
The Saturn is 100% fame. Sadly was a 2d powerhouse at a time when everybody was focused on 3d and PlayStation appeared to out perform it. However its games library is superb and even games critically perceived back then really hold up today -Daytona USA (first release of it) plays and feels like the arcade , it was unfairly compared to ridge racer which had half the complexity to port to PlayStation
My dad brought a HD/DVD external, we only used it once and never brought the red cases for them 😅 but i remember the disc drive and the remote! + a piece of technology that shouldn't of failed was the dreamcast it was absolutely ahead of it's time, games looked and played fantastic on it and some of the things it did, only now are companies like PlayStation are doing with the ps 4 and 5!
Aswell with the kinect it's a great way for my son to play games he's autistic and finds it confusing with what buttons to press etc so when he can play something like just dance hands free it's gets us all involved
The problem with the Atari Jaguar wasn't the console itself, it was Atari themselves. They had lost a lot of market share to Sega and Nintendo and Bankruptcy was on the cards before they released it. It did not help that they spent much of its development on the Panther too. They just did not have the money to scout for developers let alone support them, leading to a lackluster game selection that weren't just remakes of the simplistic arcade games from 15 years before.

What you were saying about wearing headphones for immersion isn't wrong. But you neglected to mention microphone monitoring which is the main reason that a lot of broadcast microphones have a headphone socket on them. It's important to know what your voice sounds like and if you're positioning yourself correctly relative to the pickup pattern. And it's important to minimise the lag on that feedback so that it doesn't confuse the crap out of you as you're trying to talk. But, because humans are very clever, we can also process other sounds while we're doing this on the fly. So a lot of modern microphones are also able to mix desktop audio with mic monitoring output.
The main benefit of gopro versus otehr action cams ( ive been using gitup cams for years) is GPS, which most cams dont have....if action camera had more interchangeable lens, telephoto, IR, thermographic....theres more they could include.
The amount of failed systems and peripherals Ive bought was insane. Saturn,Dreamcast,Minidisc,Kinect V1 and V2 Xbox HDDVD addon Basically if it's a two horse race and I'm looking at it and thinking it's cool,buy the other as that's probably the one that's going to succeed lol
My mate had Sega Satun and I loved playing Panzer Dragoon and I would stay very late at his because of this game. I don't play these days I'm too old 😅 but I still have my Sega Game Gear, PSP1 and the first XBoX. Great times and memories.
You get a teenager to play with those blocks in the back of Car your living the dream. Love the idea of Toys going back analogue but you can’t beat a good old board game. Will I try a FPS or new digital game yes for ten minutes but you put a Scalextric down I’m in for the long haul all day 😂 well I’m 50…… like the Star Wars ball thing.
I adore this. As a retro video game collector, Jason is my Spirit Animal, my megadrive is my absolute favourite console of all time and fave game is micro machines 2 (J cart edition with 2 controller ports on the cart) keep up the good work you sexy guys ❤
I know scalextric is still very popular today but surely they could bring back TCR (but better than it was) I always wanted one as a child but never got one.
I had an Atari Jaguar CD (bought in the 2010s) - my main issue is a lot of the games just weren't good. Some were, but a big chunk just weren't. Club Drive - I'm looking at you. Sadly I think it has to go on the Wall of Shame as Atari messed up the marketing, the manufacturing (the CD drive should never have been an add-on - it should have been there at the start) and poor games. The Kinect - probably also Shame, and HDDVD (due to format limitations) and the Saturn (due to delays and price). However the Pebble is Wall of Fame as it did nothing wrong, it was just a small device up against a giant.
£500 for the PS3 when blue ray players were still £1500 is what won it over HDDVD, PlayStation knew what they were doing because that’s what helped sell the PS2 with DVD for similar reasons
HD-DV may not have failed if Microsoft would have included it in the 360 launch console. Although Sony may eventually have won the format war with Blu-ray. Betamax lost out to VHS mainly due to the major film companies not releasing films on the Betamax format, after that Sony bought into film companies so that would never happen again.
20:20 xbox sold a lie i remember them saying xbox is cheaper than PS, but then you get told you gotta buy the DVDHD drive separately. That unsold it for me.
I think the problem with repairs is that manufacturers don’t want you to, Apple are one of the worse culprits with making most of the stuff virtually unrepairable or extremely difficult to repair or even upgrade, Can you do a section on a future podcast about repairs and the right to repair as this is a big issue especially in the USA ?
Kinect felt pretty crap to me mainly because of the amount of space you had to have to use it. For narrow or small living rooms it would always winge about play space for me. Comparatively, I never had the same problem with the Wii.
Would say Kinect for fame, it sold well, it's use outside of gaming for Bomb disposal robots and for Doctors practicing procedures etc elevated it to another level.
The xbox kinect is still a great bit of family entertainment we always get it out and give the sports games ago with the family can't beat it for a belly laughs
BetaMax vs VHS... the consumer market was shunted to VHS because the Motion Picture Industry chose the BetaMax to have better than broadcast quality on tape and a later iteration SuperBetaMax was used for many years to project motion pictures on cine screens. Same with BluRay and HD-DVD... the Higher Quality because the industry standard of the motion picture industry. They launch both, so they can buy sufficient equipment in the industry... then they shut it down. IF you have a copy of a Bond Film on SuperBetaMax or HD DVD... you can not take it home and watch it nor COPY it! Now, for years, many years, the torrents of Telly shows and cams in cine versions on TPB etc torrent sites are deliberately placed there by the motion picture industry studios as the number of torrents are used in calculations of how well a film or telly episode will play in xyz country / territory. It is all about the numbers in the industry!
If you go Colchester zoo - they have a Kinect set up in this play , explore type area where it scans a sand pit table thing with dinosaurs adjusts the landscape projected based on sand height.
Imo.... atari made a mistake at hardware design where developers could not work out the best way to develop the software. Dev kits were expensive, and there should have been a shift in where it was easier to code for. Atari were on the backfoot of good software for a powerful machine and died quickly. Nintendo n64 is similar. 2 developers of hardware, which had cost cutting on the bus communication and texture memory available. Made for blurry 3d really, but with nintendo marketing and in-house programmers, it was not the same steep learning curve. All my opinion, of course, but tech design was high on both machines but no talking really between hardware developers and coders of the software
Hd-dvd died because the backers were split who to support. The ps3s internal bluray player made bluray more popular and the 360 player was seperate. Yes hd-dvd had less space but had an easier code for the menu. Look at extras on hd-dvd and the menu was better and cheaper to manufacture. In many ways the encoding looked sharper as well. I was disappointed how hd-dvd died as the warehouses were more geared up for manufacture than bluray. Even now, bluray extras look bland compared to hd-dvd.

I understand English AND French, but, it's hard to understand the english literally/stupidly translated into a kind of incomprehensible french. A gadget that didn’t achieve the success it should have I think is the PS vita handheld. Gorgeous piece of kit, but killed really by mobile phone gaming
The konnect was years ahead of its time. I still have mine connected to my Xbox One. I loved the fact that you could walk into the room and say “Xbox on” and it would turn on your Xbox And your TV. It was the beginning of my Smarthome journey. You can now use Alexa to do the same thing.

Remember when electronics didn’t even come with a plug on. You had to wire your own.

Sega Saturn..loved mine..had two. I brought it for Virtua fighter, Cop and Rally...Panzer Dragoon was also brilliant..

The best game on the Jaguar was Tempest 2000 almost worth the price of the console alone.
