  • Plein air oil painting on a VERY windy Gwithian beach in Cornwall - I thought beforehand, it would be a great idea! It was also pretty cold, mind you - it is January in Cornwall with storms coming in regularly!
It was great fun though! Fortunately I had my daughter with me to do some filming on her phone and my son was looking after Basil. The beach was deserted other than the Gulls and Oystercatchers who we shared it with for the afternoon.
Painting this was very challenging in the strong gusting wind but I was happy with the result for a 15 - 20 minute alla prima oil painting. It was a great experience and good practice.

Thanks for another inspirational painting Andrew, the whole thing is a joy, the sound of wind and waves, the seabirds calling and the beautiful wildness of of the scene.
Your daughter is a real trouper filming in these conditions and Basil just enjoys himself wherever he is 😀

Painting outdoors appeals to me a lot, till I actually do it. The weather very quickly tells you who’s boss, passers-by seem to become agitated and one often feels like it’s not worth the effort. I admire those who brave it.

It is great fun - most of the time! I used to always end up forgetting something important but since I had the French easel that doesn't happen. The weather doesn't bother me too much but annoying people can

Andrew… you brave the elements when most of us would snap a picture on our phones and head for the warmth of home (or the studio). The result is a masterpiece of gritty enthusiasm. Well done and thanks for sharing. P.S. You have a very supportive family… not forgetting Basil of course! 😊

Hi Andrew ... Been having same type of weather across the pond here on cape cod ... I think challenging conditions can sometimes help in creating more spontaneous effects resulting interesting colors and brushwork , like the dashes for the waves added nice movement and the same for sky ... Moving quickly I t results in using your intuition and knowledge = a great stormy day painting!

Love it! Even more impressive is convincing your kids to come and help. Mine would flat refuse, and laugh at me for being so obsessed with painting something that I’d stand in the freezing cold and gale force winds. I totally would though. My first plein air attempt ever was a 16x32” in -3 degrees. Gave up after 3.5 hours 😂

that''s so good lmao especially considering the elements. we're from the middle of the $^#* prairies so it's nice to see and hear the sea sounds.
really refreshing to see such a fresh painting style where it's not overworked and laboured over, and the final result really works

Wonderful place, day, and scenery. Do you use acrylic or oil? If oil, how fast does it dry? Do you transport the painted picture in the car?

    • @AndrewBarrowmanArt

Thank you very much Mark. It is a glass palette that I had made to fit inside my easel box. I taped some cardboard to the underside so I couldn't see through it
