I think your emphasis on “symbolism” is pushing the idea too far. On the one hand, everyone & everything is meaningful, not just “symbols”. On the other many apparently “symbolic” forms are beings in their own right that “act”; e.g. currency, religion icons, etc. ochre was used to coat bodies. Cosmetics today still use ochre and similar “earths”. The presence of ochre at Blombos may have been used to Make images, rock art” but since ochre was also the colour of persons, I think that most was used to protect the body: bodies are earth art as much as “paintings” are bodies.
