  • Vintage accessories are my favorite thing to collect, unlike clothing which sometimes doesn't fit, or can tend to degrade faster due to fragile fabrics, accessories can last through time and thank goodness because these fabulous items deserve to be worn again! These are the items I've been buying lately, what vintage accessories are on your wishlist?

    Adore those ruched white gloves 💞

    My favorite is the hat, you look really adorable in it. I appreciate how you always mention that you don't have to pay a fortune for one item, but can dig around more for something similar but reasonably priced. A lot of TH-camrs do the "it was horribly expensive, but I just HAD to have it" routine waaay to often for it to be a special occasion. And it's not a good attitude to instill in viewers who usually have less money.

      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you Olga! I don't have a fortune to be spending on things myself, so budgeting is always a concern of mine! Plus I'd rather get a deal if I can, I'm willing to search for the best price for sure :) I think it's important for people to know that the vintage look can be achieved on a budget.

    I had such beautiful and so well made rhinestone pieces from my mother. They were gorgeous. Probably more late 40’s into fifties. But we had a fire and lost EVeryThing! The pain! Your finds are so nice and beautiful. What great finds for your collection.have a great week, Bianca.

    The design of the red gloves looks solid late 30’s early 40’s. They look right out of Adrian design from The Women.

    One of the only benefits of having a larger foot size (you were talking of glove sizes, which brought this to mind) is that when there's a sale on, it's the time you may have a chance of finding something in your size!

    Happy Sunday, Bianca. Love your name btw. Just wanted to say hi and thank you for your kind comments. So nice. Sorry for your friend as well. It’s such a painful situation. Love your style and enjoy very much seeing your selections. You’ve got great taste. You’re so lucky to be able to sew as you do. I’m sure that takes you far. How’s the writing going? I’m pulling for you. You’re such a dear girl. Me, I could be your grand mom or great gran. Yep, I’m up there! I’m so happy I’ve found your channel. I so enjoy it. And you of course! Enjoy your Sunday. Really do love that purple hair on you. I bet it really was a killer to upkeep. Talk to you soon. Hugs, Rachel ❤️🐈💄🌷

    You know, I watch the videos again and again and depending on the light I have, I see more or less details. So, as I can see now the black and the blue bag are made by crochet, on double herringbone stich and shell stich respectively.

    Do you have any recommendations for resources that are helpful for authenticating vintage bags? I thrifted a bag the other day which I think is from the 1930s but I'm not too sure.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know of any specific authenticating resources exactly, but for some general knowledge of styles and materials for each era check out Vintage Dancer's articles vintagedancer.com/1930s/1930s-handbags-purses-history/ which can give a great overview of the different styles.Other than that, it's just about researching to see if you can find a similar bag in an old photograph or catalog page. Sometimes the materials themselves give good clues, like metal zippers being a good indicator of age, or the fonts on old labels being very mid-century or art deco looking in style. Anything with polyester, even a poly lining, is going to be from the second half of the 20th century rather than the first, details like that can help date things for sure!

    I'm a genealogy/family history nut. I'm not interested in pedigree (meaningless to me), but love the story of people's lives. Do you ever wonder about the person who may have worn the jewelry or garments?

    • @TheClosetHistorian

      I’m toying with the idea of just vacuuming it gently and then going over it with a damp cloth. Hmmmmm.

  • @cailliewaters5869
    @cailliewaters5869 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What is a good price to pay for a1950’s cloth purse in good to excellent condition? I have my eye on a couple and want to make sure I wouldn’t be over paying.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm well it does depend, some colors/fabrics are rarer than others. For faux leather handbags I look to get them at around $30 or less unless it's a crazy great color then I'd go up to around $60, for real leather I stick to around $50-$70. Cloth it's hard to say because I'm not exactly sure what you mean, velvet? corde? lace? satin? There are many styles of cloth handbags. I guess my biggest shopping strategy for vintage is that if I see something I really like, and can't find it anywhere else for less, then it is probably pretty rare and I'll save up for it/spring for it. I always search far and wide for the best deal though; like the silver bag in this video, there are some similar ones going for $40 on Etsy right now, and others for just $9, so make sure you check out what other similar bags are going for to establish whether you think the price for the one you'd like is fair.

    • @cailliewaters5869
      @cailliewaters5869 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheClosetHistorian they claim it’s satin, but I don’t know how knowledgeable they are, and it’s a coblentz bag

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm for satin I would probably only go up to around $40 unless it was truly exceptional or unique personally.

  • @chsz8665
    @chsz8665 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How do you figure out your hat and glove size??

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For hats the band size is measured around the head across the forehead and just over the ears, but many many vintage hats are free size in that the inner circumstance is quite small (20 inches or less) because the hat is meant to perch atop the head rather than fit down around the head like most modern hats do. For gloves measure around the palm/hand just below the fingers, if the measurement is say 7.5", then the glove size would be 7.5.

    So this might be an inappropriate question to ask here but I just moved to Denver from Chicago and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for the best flea markets and swap meets. Not just for clothes but in general. Ive been to Mile High once and it was okay. Any info you had would be greatly appreciated.

      I am more of an online shopper myself, so I sadly don't know of too many! The Littleton Antiques Mall on Broadway is one of my favorites, and many of the little shops further down on Broadway closer to Denver are nice to browse around in too. I like the Paris Street Fair Market at Aspen Grove Mall (off Sante Fe) in the summer time too, even though most of the dealers are more shabby chic than really true vintage. Sorry I can't be of more help!

    Bianca I am enamored of your interesting pins with the chain between. In looking for something similar, I'm finding "collar pins". Is that the same item or are collar pins more recent? Seeing them on lapels, so balanced right-to-left, is not nearly as fun as the way you positioned them on your shirt front.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think collar pins/clips with chains are different, though I have had vaguely heated discussions with those who disagree over that in the past! I have seen them labeled as chatelaine brooches, like here on reputable seller Raleigh Vintage raleighvintage.com/products/vintage-late-1940s-brass-flower-chatelaine-brooch before, or also as duette brooches (which are actually different, but people label stuff wrong often) or as double pins too. Good luck hunting them down out there, it isn't the easiest style to find!
