DIY Cheap Solenoid Temperature Control for SS Brewtech Chronicle Fermenters

  • We needed a way to control multiple fermenters with our Glycol Chiller, but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a system to do so. Instead we bought some cheap solenoids and Inkbirds off Amazon and built our own system! It's jankey - but it works :)

    Hey guys, quick idea for a video would be on how you harvest yeast, or if you don't maybe just industry standards on how it's done? I just always feel guilty dumping a perfectly healthy colony of yeast at the end of my primary every time! You guys explain stuff so well thought it'd be worth the ask! Keep it up and Cheers!

      Absolutely! We have a couple batches coming up we will be able to do that with so we'll be sure to get it on video. Thanks for the idea :)

    Can you do a video on how you guys transfer wort from the kettle to the fermenter without transferring a bunch of hops and what you guys do about cold break, and also a video on how you guys dry hop in the fermenter with the least risk of introducing oxygen? I enjoy the channel, I use to watch brewing TV before Dawson, Keelers and Chip split with northern brewer and i haven't found a brewing channel that I liked since until now...keep up the good work

    Hi guys, nice set up !
    How did you put the inkbird thermometer inside the SS conical fermentor ? Is it possible to link the thermometer that's already installed in these fermentors ?
    Thanks.

    Interesting video was thinking of building fermenting fridge using the ink bird

      They are fantastic little controllers! Best part is that they can cool and heat for year round temp control. I even use one in my greenhouse.

    I don't have much room for a chest freezer in my homebrew setup so thinking of investing in a glycol chiller as I'm tired of changing out ice - especially when trying to cold crash. There isn't much "objective" information out there on glycol chillers so I'm looking if you guys have any recommendations. The main three companies I'm seeing in the homebrew market are penguin, ss brewtech, and grainfather

      Morebeer.com has the brewbuilt ones that came out last year - for the price they are the best on the market

    That's a pretty great solution for multiple fermenters! I was planning on setting one up like a Keezer, and having the temperature controller hooked up to a pump. Do you have a fancy chilling system that feeds the glycol?

    • @GenusBrewing
      @GenusBrewing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, the big thing with the grates is actually a commercial 1/2hp glycol chiller(way overkill for the home game). I can see your idea working great with some kind of heat exchanger like a small radiator in the freezer.

      Genus Brewing yup, that was the idea. What's a home gamer glycol chiller run for, are they even available?

    • @GenusBrewing
      @GenusBrewing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Small glycol chillers are available but they are pretty expensive. I know SS Brewtech has one for $1000 and I think the cheapest one I've seen was around $600. I have faith that these prices will drop over the next few years as the market for small chillers grows. I do know of some air conditioner hacks with glycol that you should be able to learn more about with a quick google search. Cheers!

    Replace that last valve with NOR-gate into solenoid from other solenoids that are used in fermenters. ... Makes sense? To me atleast. :D

    Any chance you can post the model of solenoid. The amazon link isn’t working. Thanks!

    Does that mean your pump runs 24 hours ?

    • @GenusBrewing
      @GenusBrewing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - you need to make sure there is always an open loop, so if all the solenoids are shut it still cycles

    As a fan, as a middle aged guy to a younger guy, as a fan that wants to help a younger guy: Your hairstyle is unbecoming of a grown man. It looks like that of a five year old whose mom cuts his hair, but she's lazy and doesn't do it that often. And no, the beard does not offset the childishness of the haircut. Love the channel, glad to see yinz again.

      Sometimes my hair feels like a Chia Pet. My wife actually is the one who cuts It and i will be the first one to admit that I am overdue for a monthly shearing. Unfortunately my 7 week old keeps postponing our "appointments" and this channel isn't quite popular enough yet for me to justify paying a professional to do it. I do appreciate the feedback though.
