    Just found this video and loved it!.Gave me a right blast from the past, as I used to live in Bath and took this route to get back to Newport for University after weekends at home.
    I loved getting to see the route from this perspective! especially when in the tunnels!! :D. Someone below commented what? 2 years ago, saying you need to cut that black tunnel bits out Well can I say I am glad you didn't!. It is awesome seeing it from this view!.

    Interesting video👍🏻 I was born in 1959 and used to visit my grandparents on a regular basis when I was a little lad. Their back garden backed onto the railway just down the road from Horfield station which had just closed by the time I started to watch the trains( they lived in Wordsworth Road). I can still remember vividly watching the last few years of steam and earlier diesels. I used to sit on the top of the concrete posts that held up the chain link fence at the bottom of the garden balancing my notebook on my legs and absolutely crapping myself when the steam engines would come clanking up the gradient chucking smoke and cinders up into the air, I’m sure sometimes there was a banking engine as well! I’m sure there used to be 4 tracks in that section, when did the other tracks disappear? Cheers Neal.

    Much enjoying these cab rides. I now realise how important it would be sound the horn just before exiting a tunnel because your forward vision is literally blinded by that approaching light.Has this Thumper made any excursions over the Salisbury to Exeter route that have been filmed?I can recall a glimpse of one passing Feniton (Sidmouth Junction) level crosssing, complete with oil tail lamp to keep the WR happy.

      @hastingsdiesels  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for this. We've been that way on occasion, yes; I recall heading to Totnes on The Eclipse DEMU in August 1999, via a (brief) overnight halt at Salisbury! I haven't filmed along that route, however.

  • @BernieHollandMusic
    @BernieHollandMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    9:47 as originally built to Brunel's specification this short section seen in shadow was actually in a tunnel which was opened out in the 1880s

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed. See my subsequent video of the same route, with better footage, an audio track and more research, which refers to the old tunnel and Fox's Wood Quarry at 40 minutes: th-cam.com/video/T3qZ5ZYQB_I/w-d-xo.html

  • @motorheadmalc
    @motorheadmalc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is ace! I mean, it's shot from the front of a Thumper and there's no blurry, juddery, shaking because of the engine like so many other DEMU cab films I've seen. Please can you tell me how this was achieved?

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Forward-facing cab videos from the Hastings DEMU prior to 2015 were filmed using a conventional camcorder and mounting system, which resonated with engine vibrations. The current system relies on a GoPro camera both suction-mounted to and braced against the windscreen, which has yielded an improvement in this regard.

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I can't 'turn up the volume' on this video as the footage would include members of the traincrew conversing - so there'd be a privacy issue there. Since the year I took this, I've tried to put a second microphone in the rear cab to use audio from there instead in such circumstances.

    Why are there no headlights on this train? Going through that tunnel in total blackout seems insanely unsafe. Liked the video a lot.

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The train has a high-intensity headlight. Its purpose is to warn others of the train's approach. It does not illuminate the track usefully, and does not show up on the video because of technical limitations with the camera. Given the stopping distances of trains, headlights serve no purpose to the driver except at 5mph. Trust me, I'm a train driver too!

Maybe one day passengers will be able to share such a view from their seats by CCTV like some air passengers enjoy ? As a bit of a rail nerd myself it was great to see some remnants of Brunel's original architecture from his pioneering masterpiece. Also a good record of the line before they electrify it :-)

    Can't help thinking...... isn't about time we built a new Severn Rail Bridge?? ....we have the technology and know how now which wasn't really the case back in Victorian times, or even 50 years ago.
    I know the Severn is considerably wider than the Forth, but even so. If Denmark and Sweden can do it .... .then so can we.
    The tunnel is continuously being drained of water. It's not an ideal situation, and must be costing Network Rail a fortune every year. Even an expensive rail bridge would prove value for money in the long term.

    • @stanley3647
      @stanley3647 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope, it is too complicated for Tory's goverment.
      Instead we have deepest water spring in entire world! (As You mentioned: Severn Tunnel still leaking since build, and pumps running 24h to pump water from it) but not worry, taxpayers cover electicity bill for this :) (Network Rail is own by goverment, so all bill are covered by nation)

    Steam railways are all about chuffing noises, clicking noises, and all the other noises associated with steam trains... the absence of any sound on this video makes it completely anodyne....

    • @DaveSuperThomas
      @DaveSuperThomas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a steam-hauled train and it's not running on a steam railway - it's a Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit running on a main line from which steam trains were banished by the Western Region in 1965.

    It's a good thing to pay attention to the screen you are filming through. That spot of water should have been wiped away. It spoils several minutes of an otherwise enjoyable video.

    • @hastingsdiesels
      @hastingsdiesels  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Please read the description! This was an *unattended* camera. That means that nobody was there watching what it was doing. The driver route-conductor who may have been looking through the same windscreen would be unaware of my filming efforts, while I would not be allowed in the cab while the train was moving. It's just one of those things, I'm afraid.
