    Digging around on the touch screen to make rapid forward and reverse changes ( as in a rapid 3-point turn on a busy street) is a recipe for frustration and potential disaster. Buttons might help, but we don’t see them in the picture and typically those movements need to be done without looking .... hence the logic behind a shift lever.

    • @andromeda9340
      @andromeda9340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can override it by using "PRND" on the touchscreen

    • @eurouc
      @eurouc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@andromeda9340 You made my point exactly! So there you are needing to do a zippy 3-point turn on a busy street.... and having to tap away on a screen is not the safest or most expeditious way. Hard buttons might help a little, but digging around on a touch screen is crazy under those circumstances.

    • @unitrader403
      @unitrader403 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@eurouc he said override, its not the primary control (that would be some kind of AI). i too have some doubts, but we will see how it turns out. They seem pretty confident about itif its the primary way..

    • @arcanernz
      @arcanernz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They could of put the drive/reverse on the steering wheel for faster shifting.

    • @eurouc
      @eurouc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@unitrader403 I’m skeptical that any current AI could determine a trajectory for a voluntary 3-point turn. The example given, backing away from a wall, is one thing, however, dodging city traffic in a random back and forth movement requires snappy direction changes, made potentially risky if it takes a hand off the already questionable steering yoke.

    The deletion of convenient direction controls will make tasks like rocking a car back and forth to get out of deep snow and driving onto service ramps much more accident prone.

    • @questioner1596
      @questioner1596 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sgill4833, I have not driven a Tesla in snow, but I have driven cars with similar or more ground clearance and been hung up in a deeper drift. It doesn't matter how great the tires or traction control are if the vehicle's weight doesn't push down on the wheels. In this case, driving backwards through snow already compacted on your way in could be the only way to get the vehicle moving again without pushing.

    Ryan thanks for an excellent and timely update on the latest S and X Tesla!
    I am think about buying my first Tesla S model. But, I am concerned about it having the older, although updated batteries. Eventually the X and S will get the 4680 batteries. I imagine everyone will want an S that has a range of over 500 miles compared to the S with 350 mile range. Resale value could take a hit.
    What are your thoughts?

    • @jonathansage2147
      @jonathansage2147 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're waiting for the X to get 4680s then I imagine it's going to be mid to late 2022. Feels like a long time to wait if you are looking at cars now. I have a performance X with 305 miles of range and I don't regret it. 500 would be great, but it isn't necessary unless you're doing road trips monthly or more.

    Great recap. Tesla never stops innovating, doesn’t wait for a new model year to roll out changes; learns from other models and incorporates the best features into other models.
    The steering wheel will be very interesting. I’d put it in my 3 tomorrow; but think it’s going to be ‘too much’ for many people.

      Innovation if fine as long as you're moving forward. However, these "innovations" are changes for the sake of being different. I see no evidence that any of them makes driving easier, safer or more enjoyable. Not a single one.

    @marienguyen2501 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thx Ryan for the nice summary! I am not sure what to think about some of the features and so I am going to just hold my judgement....that is one thing Tesla has taught me .....don’t pre-judge something until you try it and try it well. You never know....it could be better....and you would never know IF you don’t give it a chance! Sure it might not be better, but I am so very interested in test driving a new S. It is a bit too expensive and a bigger car than I want, but I love seeing innovation being implemented. As a side note, I actually like the new Interface for the model 3 and Y....it took me like one drive to get used to it....and I like it perfectly fine. It is funny how people are so incredibly quick to judge without giving something a serious try....

    At least five solutions for problems that don’t exist! Deleting the gear selection is absolutely insane - the driver needs to be in charge of such unimportant things as whether the car is going to go forward or backwards when he hits the gas. Sometimes one needs to edge towards objects and it’s not up to the car to refuse.
    Just because something is possible it’s not a given that it’s sensible. That should be written in 2’ high font on the developers’ walls.
