Pendleton Somerby EBIKE test & review PART 2 Halfords • Pendleton Somerby EBIK...
My first go on an electric bike. I borrowed this Halfords Pendleton Somerby from a friend . I am very impressed, this is the smaller 17" model it was still comfortable enough for me and I'm 6'1. It's very easy to ride. It zips up steep hills well. I definitely recommend it.

Had this bike for over a year: honest review ;) I travel 6 miles a day on it just for work, but its honestly changed my life, I now use it for EVERYTHING. there are down sides that i'll mention (from my first year and over 3000 miles on bike) The saddle, great... but because is there No suspension on the bike, it crapped out after 6 months.... managed to get a good replace on amazon for £24. Breaks!!! if you use this bike on a daily....because it is so speedy (for UK standards) you will burn through them, speak to your man at halford and upgrade them (about£10) the last major cost .. and it a biggish one.... did you know that at about the 1500 mile mark you should have your motor on the rear wheel replaced? neither did I, until I hit a major pothole and had to get the rear wheel (that includes the motor) fully replaced.....however tho this cost around £135 I can say its the best money I spent, bike run a lot smoother now :) The Up sides...ever hear of dutch style bikes?!? well this is pretty bloody close, and as a person who ridden mountain bikes all her life, this style of bike is so refreshing and an actual joy to ride, i don't think i ever want to go back to the hutched over my handle bar look. SIZE: this was a biggy for me, I am 6 foot tall. Ive never rode a women's bike that doesn't make me look like i'm riding a child's bike..........the lager size frame dwarfs me, and it makes me happy :) Overall cost...bike £1049 My annual bus pass, £1200! I full year on even with upgrades Im now saving money :) I love this bike! Halford now do a thing where you can trail a bike....do it and you will full in love too xx
Great comment. I have to disagree with the replacing your motor at 1500 miles. The motor should last way longer than that. Replace it and the battery only when they are no longer working well enough. Lithium batteries can be charged many thousands of times, they very slowly lose capacity over time.I have traveled much more than 1500 miles on my swytch motor.

@Folk Survival The Pendleton is brilliant for the price! The power assist is very good. Its a tad heavier then a normal bike but that's to be expected. I bought the basket and pannier accessories. Makes me giggle every time I ride it! I would recommend this
Just being riding my new pendleton electric for about 2 or 3 weeks - was loving it - but suddenly electrics not working.
battery is charged, lights on up front - light under the pedals on but otherwise no power - help? where do i start to see what's wrong

I've got one on order but may have to wait till the end of the month to pick it up as Ireland's on partial lockdown.

@@tracker1009 no suspension bad! I learned to ride on a bike that had no tyres this is marginally better 🤣 I bought the bike because I don't drive so it's more of a mode of transport. I haven't been able to go to any of the places I needed the bike for but those places are beginning to open up again. Recharging frequency depends on the weight of the rider. Obviously the lighter one is the longer the charge lasts.
Excellent video! I've just bought one... love it. But I don't know how to change it from the eco mode. Doesn't seem to have any instructions in the manual? If anyone could advise me on how to change the mode & advise me what each mode is recommended for please & thank you in advance!
I haven’t seen an eco mode on my wife’s bike. She has low medium and high levels.

Quite late to the comments but I wanted to ask about the metallic rattling, I expect them to be the mudguards but is it very noticeable when you're biking? I'm contemplating getting a vintage looking bike but I'm unsure about the noise it makes or does every bike do that?
The bolts on the bike were loose from removing a wheel and being put in a car and not tightened back up. Not by me. My wifes bike doesn’t rattle like this.

It was just a badly adjusted Front brake. It has now been serviced by Halfords. I will do a follow up video in a few weeks
Oh okay. Well I look forward to the next video. I am thinking of getting one in the next couple of weeks. Basically I am looking for an old fashioned Dutch style bike but electric. This seems to tick all the boxes. Do you know of any others that don't break the bank? I do like this one and only came across it a couple of days ago.
I have seen some similar on Amazon, Mostly third party sellers. The alternative for me would be local bike shops. The last time I looked the price was significantly higher than the Pendleton. I like the fact that loads of people will have these so it will be easier to troubleshoot outside of its guarantee.
silly question but can off-road tyres be fitted to this model?...as where we ride is a canal with quite stoney ground :)
Maybe if you removed or adjusted the mudguards. The supplied tyres are very forgiving with bumps.

Amazing review ! I'm really tempted to buy one for me, the only thing is that i will use as commute to my work, and I have to face every day a 4,5km road of pure hills, do you think she can handle it? Or it's better invest in a Carrera ebike
I definitely recommend it, my wife is very pleased with hers the battery life is great.

As a former Halfords Bikehut mechanic, I would recommend the Carrera Ebike over the Pendleton Ebike as the Frameset and drivetrain components are lighter for hill climbing.

@@leonardoaguiar6982 I can't comment on that bike as I stop working for Halfords back in 2016. But for the time I was working there, I always recommended the Carrera models over Apollo when it comes down to performance and value for money.
Apollo bikes are generally good for occasional riding to get the best longevity out of the wear and components but if you are day-to-day commuter then the Carrera wins hands down.
If you are budget conscious because you mentioned the Apollo then go for the Carrera folding Ebike if you can't afford the hybrid. However you would cover greater distance on the Carrera hybrid because of the larger 700c wheels.

I purchased this bike after watching the video but I'm very disappointed after forking out nearly 1000.ive had it 3 weeks and its been back to halfords 3 times, the chain came off and caused gears not to change, electric motor was very jerky then had same gear changing problem. Now I find the bike very hard to ride without using electric and it was so easy to peddle when I first bought it.in the low power mode I get to about 6mph and the power cuts out so you have to change into medium then its fine. Is this meant to happen as I've had other electric bikes in past and power stays on all time in low mode. I'm taking it back and changing it
My wife and our friend have had a completely different experience with the Pendleton. Low power does cut out at a low speed. My wife generally uses medium. My Swytch kit behaves in the same way.
@@leepspvideo why does the power cut out though as it doesn't in medium. My wife uses a batribike and she can use that in low all the time without it cutting out.i can't keep up with her when we are both in low mode. Thanks for reply btw
It’s just a different choice by the manufacturer. The Pendleton will likely use less power in low mode. less watts means more distance.
@@leepspvideo one more question sorry, I'm on verge of taking mine back to halfords on Monday, had it since 17 Aug. When power is off its very hard to peddle like a normal bike, I'm sure it was very easy when I first bought it.is yours easy or hard to peddle on straight road without battery on
@@robin121067 in a low gear on the flat it’s OK without power. It is heavy though. The battery has run out while my wife was riding recently she cycled the last mile with some inclines. I would tend to pretty much always have power on on most ebikes. I often ride my My old mountain bike with a Swytch kit Without power.
Great review, thinking about getting the Pendleton. Just wondering whether the bike was heavy, for example carrying up stairs and mounting it on to car bike racks? Appreciate any insight on this!
It is heavy. You don’t feel it when your riding. If you do have to get it upstairs or lift onto a bike rack I recommend you visit a Halfords and ask to lift it. Most ebikes are heavy. The new Swytch kit is lightweight on the right bike.

@@leepspvideo Thank you for your reply! I live in a building without a lift or bicycle storage so a heavier bike will make it more difficult to get the bike in and out of my flat. I will take a trip to Halfords to test the weight and see if I can carry it easily before purchasing. Thank you very much!

Do e bikes accelerate by themselves? Im new to this ebike market. Are they like e scooters?
Legally they need to be pedal assist. Although under pedalling still results in the motor driving you forward.

No, just to remove the battery.

When you turn the key the battery can be removed. Give the battery a full charge then put it back on the bike, you should get a decent click when the battery is properly in place. Press the power button on the handlebars to switch it on. The led lights on the handlebars show the battery level. If this doesn’t work take it back to the seller.

Good video, but what a noisy bike,something rattling all the time,think I would have taken it straight back to Halfords.
it had been partly disassembled to put in a small car prior to me borrowing it. I put together my wife’s Pendleton which can be seen in this video, it doesn’t have the same rattle. th-cam.com/video/w3d0s8X60jI/w-d-xo.html
I'm fairly sure you could have made the gear adjustment needed, without a screwdriver, by simply twisting the black adjuster at the end of the rear derailer until the chain lined up properly with whatever gear it was in. Would probably only have taken a quarter turn.
As the bike was borrowed and the owner has a service plan I didn’t make any alterations.

My wifes bike doesn’t rattle. The one I borrowed wasn’t properly reassembled after being dismantled to put in a small car.

Remember, you get what you pay for, this seems a fair price at the moment £999 and is a better deal than the Chinese bikes full of gismos and once broken parts are unobtainable, buy cheap buy twice!

Could anybody tell me if there is an instructional video available on how to set up & use the DAPU LCD Display on the Pendleton Somerby Deluxe electric hybrid bike? Any review I've watched doesn't cover how to set up & use & no instructions in the documents I received with the bike bought from Halfords. First ebike... totally new to this !!!

@@leepspvideo I did (Halfords Galway)... told me to refer to manual given when purchased... but there's definitely nothing detailing set up & usage... just a couple of diagrams showing the appearance of the display... so I thought I'd find something on my usual goto TH-cam... so far no luck with the display used on my particular ebike.

The front wheel was loose. My wife bought the same bike which I assembled. Hers is fine.
I have just collected my bike from Halfords. I asked them if there was a manual with the bike and they said no. Could anyone tell me how to remove the battery, as the key appears to have no effect in either direction.
Twist the key anti clockwise and hold. Give the battery a sharp tug backwards using the handle on the battery. It’s always quite tight.
Thank you for getting back. We took the bike to Halfords this morning where they too had trouble getting the battery out. A few hours later we found out the battery was faulty and not charging. When charging it should light up red on the cable. They are ordering a new battery but I can still use the bike at least.
There is not a single permutation of settings that will fix the spongey brakes on my girlfriend's Somerby eBike. I have spent all day trying every possible configuration and yet somehow the brakes are now worse than when I started. How that is possible I will never know. Even when the pads are set firm against the rim the brake lever will travel all the way to the handlebar with ease. Fuck me.
Have just got this bike and not feeling like I'm getting any power assist despite the level I have it on. Anyone else had same problem? It feels like a normal bike .... no power!
Something is definitely wrong. Low give a mild assist. Medium and high are very noticeable.

No, my wife’s bike doesn’t. I put it together and made everything tight. The one I borrowed had some loose bits that needed tightening.

Thanks for the video, but can anyone tell me why e-bikes in the UK are soooo shite?Compared to e-bikes in the USA/Canada they're just over priced junk here and don't start me on e-bike laws! If we want any chance of ditching fossil fuelled cars, we need to massively relax the engine size and speed limits for e-bikes and get more bums in saddles...

I'm a small women, early 50's, considering purchasing the Pendleton Somersby. I will only use roads, but live in a hilly area and wanting to regularly carry loads for several miles at a time. I ask because I can't spare a loss, or, a great price that some electric bikes call for. Can't test this bike at a store, since the Corona pandemic. This model is just within my present price range and requiring such a bike quite urgently. Thanks to anyone who can say anything helpful about this model of bike, in relation to my concerns.
