      I live nearby and can safely say that they aren't. It's a small enclosure, and they close access for the lions to get away from noise just to ensure that the visitors are entertained. It's really upsetting for people who care.

    The zoo cost about $25.00+ for entrance here . Glass & cages separates most animals from us humans. I totally agree. If they were the superior we would be locked up & they would be looking at us.
    I've seen kids & even adults pounding & pounding on windows trying to get reaction. Geez, all day- that gets old.
    Did anyone see the little cub who slipped off cement wall & hurt himself on the jaw- there's no cement in the wild. And yes they could fall off a cliff also- but they wouldn't slip on man made material in the wild were wild animals belong! Who gave us the right to snatch them from their natural habitat for our amusement?

    • @theartsyzoologist
      @theartsyzoologist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A box or a nice ball with some bovine hide on it would be good, however, what we see here is how they would typically behave in the wild while interacting with one another, they only really have each other as stimulation with the odd bit of carcass aftermath thrown in the mix.

      In the wild lions are not guaranteed a “meal” everyday so their bodies are built to keep them sustained a few days in between. If they come from a large pride they would have to hunt everyday & if they are successful in their hunt not everyone really gets an equal portion of the prey as the dominant males will usually get to feed first. If the males are out patrolling their territory the lionesses will typically eat first as they need to keep their strength up to continue hunting for the pride & to produce milk if they are nursing young cubs. Lions are apex predators but they are not very successful hunters. There are many hunting attempts made before they are actually able to bring down prey. Their usual choice of prey are Cape buffalos & buffalos are NOT easy to bring down especially if the dominant male is not with the pride. In addition to the weight of buffalos they’re also in a huge herd & at times will form a wall of horns that will attack the lions in return especially if they have young calf’s to protect. Buffalo is typically the only prey that could really feed a large pride & feed them all very well for a day or so. Lions are opportunistic hunters so they’ll go after any prey if given the opportunity and this would include young elephants, wildebeest, zebra’s, & some have even taken down giraffes..and the list goes on. My point in explaining this is that most zoos & sanctuaries will try to follow a “meal plan” for lions in captivity that is similar to how a pride would feed in the wild. Their bodies are not made to eat everyday...typically really young cubs as well as nursing lionesses are the only ones that need to feed more often & even at that, the cubs don’t nurse everyday bc lionesses have to leave the den to hunt in order to produce enough milk to nurse. A lioness could be away from the den an entire night & day before returning. I understand that people seem to think these cubs, lionesses, & lion appear thin they’re actually not at all. They look like a pride that is well fed & on a steady diet. There are lots of sad videos of prides in the wild where they are actually starving & it’s very heartbreaking to see but if you view even just one of the videos on TH-cam you will see that this family is pretty healthy. Sorry for the long information.

      Lions actually live a lot longer in captivity than they would in the wild for the most part. The average wild lion will live up to 10 or 12 years, if they are lucky. A lion in captivity lives anywhere up to 19+ years at most. I understand where you are coming from, however with canned hunting, the demand for lion bone, tooth and claw on the Chinese market and habitat encroachment through human conflict, the wild is no safe haven, not even reserves or national parks are immune from prolific poaching. Accredited zoological facilities are doing their best to maintain a thriving population in the event they should be wiped from their home lands, or worse our planet. A breeding lion is one of many ways we are taught are indicators of an animals genuine state of happiness and health. All of us studying within this field would love nothing more than to see these majestic cats roam freely across Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana etc etc however we the human race have halved the number of these cats in the space of 2-3 decades and essentially allowed it to happen.

    If you don't know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, now is the day of salvation. While it is said, "To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation (Hebrews 3:15)." "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me (Revelation 3:20).
    Ask Him for forgiveness and repent (turn away from; change) of all your sins. For in John 6:37, Jesus says, "All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38) and seek Him to fill you with His Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4) (Acts 2:1-4). Now is the time. Tomorrow is promised to no man.
    Isaiah 55:6-9:
    "6 Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
    7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
    8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.
    9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
    Love and blessings. 🙂💕
