Michelle Phillips has an angelic voice. The song is beautiful-superb vocal harmonies. They don't make them like this anymore. Great review!!

They were folk singers individually. Their song 'Creeque Alley' is the band autobiography, up to that point, in musical format. It mentions how the Lovin' Spoonful band formed, too.

The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "California Dreamin'", "Monday Monday", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

They had such wonderful harmonies in their songs-California Dreaming, Monday Monday and lots of others. You really need to hear Cass Elliott-She sings an amazing version of Dream A Little Dream of Me-You will absolutely love it! We will always miss your lovely voice Cass-RIP amazing lady.

The group lasted just 3 years but the music they made was magical. Of course my favorite was California Dreaming. They had many great songs. John was the brains of their music and Denny was a booming tenor. There was a big love triangle goin on. John was married to Michelle and she fell in love with Denny. Case was in love with Denny lol. Amazing they lasted that long. I enjoyed growing up with their music.

Michelle has said she wasn't in love with Denny; she just had an affair with him. Cass Elliott was the one in love with Denny.

      I missed out. 70s baby.
The 60s and 70s were some turbulent but magical times. Same with the 90s.
      Now everything is just turbulent.

I love your channel. I really dig seeing younger people turn to older music. It reminds me of hearing music before my time; jazz, swing, country, classical, whatever. Music is just a series of sounds that you feel. When I’m asked what my favorite music is, my answer is “20th Century.” But it reaches far beyond that. Music, like life, is an evolution. Every step should be appreciated.

    • @77Creation

Definitely. The 20th Century was peak American Music. No question.

Denny (in the green) had the pipes and so did Mama Cass Elliott (in the yellow dress). Cass had an awesome voice. Michelle & John's daughter, Chynna Phillips was in the group Wilson Phillips, and they had a few hits. RIP Mama Cass. x

Mama Cass pretty much carried the female part of this group and she went solo, Denny is the guy next to Michelle and John on the far right. John and Michelle married and had some kids who were actresses and singers (Mackenzie actor and half sister Chynna who is a singer in the group Wilson Phillips...they also have another sister Bijou Phillips). The Wilson of Wilson Phillips are the daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. So lots of music rolled up here. Michelle is the only one left now, and went into acting instead of music for a career. John had some drug issues and Denny passed a few years ago. They were together 3 years and again in 1971 with replacement singers. They had a beautiful blend in their music but had a lot of outside emotional and physical issues. Mama died of heart issues/maybe drugs too, some conspiracies around that, not really sure back then. 1974 I was in college.

Another great group from the 60's, even our parents liked these guys because of their harmonies! Sadly, there's some bad juju that ended up surrounding John Phillips in the group who allegedly had an incestuous relationship with his daughter Mackenzie. Very sad...still appreciate their music, but it put a damper on my heart.

They gave that line to Michelle because even she knew her voice wasn't brilliant and was, quite rightly, jealous of Mama Cass.

California was the epicenter of '60s music, and the Mamas and the Papas were leaders of that scene. Cass Elliot used to throw huge parties where anyone who was anyone in pop culture was invited. Check out the documentary "Echo in the Canyon" if you want to learn more about that whole scene. (It's streaming on Amazon Prime.)

The long and short. Michelle and John were married ( he divorced his wife to marry Michelle ). Michelle got around a lot one of her affairs was with Gene Clark of the Byrds. Mamma Cass was madly in love with Denny but he just wanted friendship. Michelle and Denny began an affair and all this inner turmoil and drugs bought things to a head and they split up.
