      That is exactly why extreme skill craftsman have a DUTY to pass on their knowledge to young apprentices. Every state in the union has a Apprenticeship Program to one degree or another. Many states will fund the apprentice's education and a significant portion of their pay. If we value guys like Louis Sauzedde and a ll the other extreme skill craftspeople on TH-cam, we should support greatly expanding state Apprentice Programs. I think we have enough psychology majors, political science majors, fashion designers, etc.

    A good rule of thumb for a log cant dimension is multiply the small end of the uncut log end by .7
    So a 10" log will yield a 7x7" cant. This is of course premised on equalizing the small end center to the large end center.
    It is very accurate actually.
    So if you see a tree in the forest that might fit the bill I always look for one with the least taper. Any bends forget it, they can stay in the forest providing habitat. Any damage in the butt I've learnt to leave them growing because it invariably goes right up inside the trunk.
    Depending on where you live and what species you have, after looking for a bit, you quickly realize why trees are grown in managed plantations.
    In my areas natural tree candidates for good quality might be 1 or 2% since there are so many faults in 98% of them.
    Even straight trees that lean the internal tension is released when milling so although the cant is straight as soon as you start cutting dimensional lumber they're all bowed and need stickering and weighting immediately.
    For the amount of effort required you learn to only take the very best as the rest are a waste of time times about 5.

    Hi Lou! Thank so much for another very helpful video!
    I was wondering if you would explain and to go into more detail about what causes the timber to “set” and warp when it’s cut?
    My father and I have been fixing up my older sailboat and your videos have been instrumental in teaching us to steam bend and to cut rolling bevels. Thanks to you we are having great success!
    The lumber we are using is Iroko and we frequently find that the pieces we are cutting are susceptible to setting and would really appreciate your help in understanding the causes and ways to control it.
    Thank you so much for all you are doing for the community!

    I´m not sure there's tension in that log, at 11:00 you can see that the log was mowing down at the top end. So the saw cut is actually not straight... Or...?

    • @brentmitchell6411
      @brentmitchell6411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could have been the tension from the log itself deflecting the cutter. If there is enough force in play to spring up a couple hundred pounds of timber, could see it easily being able to pull hard enough on the cutter before the cut was finished.
