Thank you for that Nigel : twenty minutes well-spent 'learning how to learn.' Far better than being told to 'do this' and 'get that.' It makes so much sense, considering the variation in equipment that we are all bringing to the table. Keep up the good work.

This is great, Nigel. I often compare identical images taken at different exposures, focal lengths, and such but never really know what I'm looking at when I'm reviewing in Lightroom, at least not to the extent that you detail here, instead looking at a single element or two and never certain why one works more than the next. You make this a super simple yet comprehensive process and I'm definitely going to borrow your techniques. Thanks so much!

Great help, thanks Nigel. I'm adding these tests to my general photo "to do" list. It's also great to hear your take on hyper focal and focus in general. It's hard to parse all of the info about HF out there and know just how necessary it is to taking good pics. I think like you in this case, when I've purposefully tried to use HF I've come away with less clarity than if I just focused for subject or infinity.

Love your study 😂 great video Nigel. Knowing how to use your camera in the field to achieve certain results is critical to work efficiently and effectively. There is nothing worse that going out shooting and coming back to realise that small steps in the field could have saved the image from a technical standpoint. I also find picking up anything but Canon, I'm completely lost! So working with various manufacturers (even if it's your friends camera) can help improve your understanding greatly! Great video again mate.

Another helpful video. I do a lot of true macro and the 'go to' settings for this tend to be f16, 1/200s and ISO 200 with a speed light (although often I go down to f11). Now I am going to do a proper test like yours to see exactly what conditions I can always shoot with a more open f number and how low I can go. DOF is, of course, tiny when focusing so closely with a macro lens but a lower f no. would mean a shorter flash time which would give a sharper image. You have given me food for thought with landscape and macro so thank you.
