I'll admit, I’m pretty negative on the genre most of the time. But, occasionally, something comes along that truly reminds me of why I love this genre in the first place.
My Friendly Neighborhood is a fusion of survival horror and mascot horror, fusing the elements of both genres that I love the most. Today, we explore just why this game encapsulates everything I love about both genres. Let us take a step in, and truly see what is going on in the neighborhood.

I just love the fact that’s there’s no sinister and needlessly convoluted reason the puppets are alive. And I love how simple and easy to comprehend the story is. No secret government experiments like in Garten of Banban. No need to scour the entire net to get the full story like in Fnaf. You can learn the full story in the game proper and the puppets are just alive and that’s it.

I fully agree. The more you add an explanation to everything takes away some of the intrigue and charm for me. If the game does get dlc or sequels. I hope that they dont do too much to the puppets origins. Maybe tell us where they were found and what not and thats it.. Probably just me though.

I think if they ever do give the puppets an origin, it should be something like the company founder making them and they came to life somehow. “No one knows quite how it happened, but it’s thought that the founder’s hopefulness is what did it”. And then it stops there.

I love that MFN wanted to have a nice story about nihilism vs childhood innocence especially with the state of nihilism in the world today. I was legit tearing up when gordon helped the puppets, because in the end of the day those puppets are childlike
EDIT: the Arnold section is also a reference to Elmo’s World, which is a show that I actually watched as a kid!

The game made me think about how society has changed after being exposed to the horrors of war from the comforts of the living room, and the detrimental side effects it's had that can still be felt to this day. The nihilism, lack of empathy and the focus on "me first" has ultimately harmed us all.
There is a point about how peoples good nature can be taken advantage of. Though if we simply stop having faith in others all together than society would just completely crumble. Bad people exist and will take advantage of others and that's a fact, but we can't use that as an excuse to treat others like garbage.
More people need to take this games message to heart and start being friendly neighbors to each other.

Proposal: we call the games that use the game characters to sell merch "consumer horror" to distinguish them from the games based on nostalgia with a horror twist that have actual horror elements and care put into them.
I'm not saying making money off of what works is bad, just that maybe distinguishing them from eachother would be better and not confuse the genre as a whole.

I love that the puppets aren't actually evil, and the best ending has you be nice, understand and help them out with their issues, and then spread a message of kindness to the rest of the world. As much as I love a good horrible dark ending in a game, it's very sweet and touching that the message the game wants to convey is "Choose kindness"

I just adore the fact that the puppets don't need some sort of ritual or some huge experiment, incident in the past, possession, or some other cliche things you can think of to exist. They exist because, well, they're puppets, just like how Jim Henson's works were. This whole game is so fun and I am SO glad that it's getting the genuine attention it deserves. THIS is how you can make a phenomenal "mascot horror" game, even though MFN is much more than that. Such a fantastic comfort game.

i think the most ironic part of this mascot horror game for me is the unfriendly neighborhood. the puppets being exposed to darker media and the reality of the world and having their childhood innocence corrupted mirrors my own introduction to horror media at a young age. sure things like fnaf with a serial child murderer as a main antagonist may be tame to even kids now, but back then i was naive and couldn't really comprehend the concept of an adult that would even hurt a child, much less intentionally kill them so horror games and creepypastas freaked me out a lot. i'm far from being a murderous psychopathic puppet, but i just think it's interesting that a game explores how the loss of childhood innocence can change someone into a more cynical person while being part of the genre that kickstarted that exact change in me.

  • @jilliancrawford7577

Imo the detail of the roladex gun being "made for fun" is very telling. To me, it implies the staff did it to shoot the puppets for their own fun. The lore may not explain why the puppets are alive, but it certainly implied that they were alive for quite some time before the studio shut down and I wouldn't be suprised if some of the staff made means to defend themselves if the puppets went rouge, especially if they didn't know why it happened and if their source of life was also the source of their innocent nature's.
In a way, it might suggest that they experimented andrealized that their good natires were based on exposure and this was why they knew in advance not to let them watch TV. How else would they decide to never let them until nobody was around to stop them? I could be wrong but it's what makes sense to me.

My Friendly Neighborhood is definitely a refreshing perspective on mascot horror. Mascot horror has such dark and horrific and reused lore behind it and not saying this doesnt have dark lore regarding the war, but there is a sweet message behind it…that there is still good in a world full of hate. This game allows an actual happy ending that I so adore because it shows other creators that not everything horror has to be so sad! The puppets just be influenced by what they see on television and only just wanting to show good behavior is such an interesting concept too…As simple as it is, more horror games should definitely take note of the entirely new take this game provides. Yes, it is simple but it’s truly a treasure. I think the mascot horror community needed this really, and I hope future games take after it as well

My Friendly Neighborhood is proof that a game actually made from a real aspect of childhood affection, in this case growing up with Jim Henson properties like Sesame Street and The Muppets and Resident Evil Games; more accurately creates a property that believably would be marketed towards and be loved by children than simply throwing a dart on a board of known brands to shape a derivative monster to chase you by. The puppets are just alive because that's the methodology of how People were always supposed to interact with Henson's Puppets since they first hit the screen together in the 60s-70s. The weapons feel accurate to the same maniac energy that would create Crazy Harry to just giggle as he blows things up to make felt fly, as well as follow the story narrative of how the handlers from the get-go weren't being the best stewards for the impressionable nature of the Neighbors by randomly inflicting violence on them for stress relief. No part of this digital buffalo is left to waste nor spoiled by chasing the same tired marketing schemes this genre seems cursed by.
And god is it still refreshing to think they have a comfortable narrative conclusion that only makes you, the player, want more because you like the characters instead of nakedly broadcasting My Friendly Neighborhood 2, 3 and 4 as soon as the game boots. I hope Ducky/John Szymanski is doing great and possibly thinking of their next game, MFN or otherwise.

I also like to think that the game could have some sort of message about neurodivergency and how the world tries to shield away mentally ill and neurodivergent individuals, locking them in psych wards or just plain ignoring them. When the demo came out I've seen a lot of people teorizing about this saying that the common enemy puppets (Norman and co) resemble lots of traits like being hyperactive and witty and talking too much, and you can find some other traits in the cutscenes with the special puppets or just by what we learn about them like most of them being nonverbal
I know that the core message of the game is about being hopeful in dark times and not falling into cinicism and nihilism, but since I've seen those people talking about it in the demo I kept thinking about it and needed to bring my thoughts up

MFN is honestly a more fleshed out version of whst i think BATIM was trying to be - survival horror. BATIM was a very stripped down idea, just focusing on puzzles and evading the enemies, but MFN is far more like what people see as “survival horror”, much closer to a classic Resident Evil game, including actual gunplay! But MFN also taps into a kid friendly version of what made classic survival horror like RE work so well - a feeling of NEVER being safe. the puppets are unkillable, the inventory space is limited, heck, even your SAVES are limited! yet, it’s never too scary or graphic that a kid couldn’t play it and have fun with it. i’d argue that MFN is a fantastic first survival horror for a younger audience, and i hope it lasts as a gem in the genre!!

I just ADORE this game! It gave me so many feelings. I remember when I saw the demo and got so excited for it! It blew me away with what they did with the theme and design elements. You can really tell how much love they have for their inspiration. I was surprised by how well they characterized all the puppets and how Gordon was able to empathize with them. I will admit I did end up crying a little at some parts, which surprised me. I love when a horror title can make me cry because I empathize with the characters, even the 'monsters'.

The primary difference between a good game and a bad game, regardless of genre or funding, is the careful attention to details and thought out interactions between the narrative and gameplay. Passion projects are worth the weight because they demonstrate understanding this concept in a deceptively impactful way, getting you immersed in them effortlessly in a fashion you won't forget them either.

I like how this game is a breath of fresh air. Lore wise and game play wise. While I do love listening to deep lore about certain Horror games, it gets old quickly when it comes down to soul gets trapped in a twisted version of a childhood object or character. While MFN doesn't have super deep lore, it doesn't need to have it. I just love the theme that it goes for that many other Mascot horror doesn't touch on.
I also like that you do have guns, but having guns doesn't make you overpowered. And it makes sense for puppets to be able to get up again, since at the end of the day, they are puppets and not whatever the toys at Poppy Playtime are supposed to be.
Overall, a good horror game and I think the brothers have a good grasp of understanding horror or at the very least what makes a good game.
