You really kinda had to be there to understand how fresh and original this was at the time. The Nightmare series had stalled out and this brought the suspense and grit back. Heather is a force to be reckoned with and solidifies herself even further as one of the ultimate final girls.
Also fun fact: for the funeral scene, wes DID wanted Johnny Depp to play himself (since he was on the OG Nightmare) but he was too shy to ask because Johnny had gotten too big. when the movie premiered, Johnny was actually a bit dissapointed that he wasnt in it, since he was too shy to ask wes to appear on the funeral scene
One creepy thing about the making of this movie… the earthquake at the start was already in the script, but then production was hit by an actual earthquake! Almost as if the dream became real… 😉
Don’t forget that Heather also had a real life stalker at this time that actually caused her to live in a different country for awhile. Wes worked it into the script with her permission.

I feel like this one is the "scariest" out of all the Freddy movies. The reason he looks so similar but different is because it's not really Freddy, it's an entity taking on the persona of Freddy, it's like describing to an artist what freddy looks like, scarred and burned, with a fedora and razor gloves, the artist rendition will "look" like Freddy but it wouldn't be a perfect image of him.
The producer that Heather was talking to was actually Bob Shay, who originally greenlit Nightmare on Elm Street for a struggling New Line Studio, which eventually made it the House the Freddy Built. The meta nature of this movie was Wes experimenting with where to go with the horror/slasher genre which had pretty much been played out at this point. This movie, while not perfect, laid the groundwork for what Scream became.
He also acted (in some capacity) in all the movies and show, except 3, 5, and the remake. AND his sister is Lin Shaye, Elise in Insidious, was the teacher in 1 and the nurse in New Nightmare.

New Nightmare is exactly what the franchise needed after the messes that were 5 and 6. I love this film. I rank this as the 2nd best in the series following the original. Dream Warriors come in at 3rd. The reason I love this one so much is how unique it is compared to the other films. This is one where Freddy steps out of not only the dream world, but out of the movie itself. He becomes a living demonic-type entity that can only enter into our reality if Heather Langenkamp plays the role of Nancy and provide him a barrier that he can break through should he defeat her. His look is different due to the idea of him being more demonic. I loved his glove in this one though. I loved the curvature of the blades and how there was a look of bone to the hand of the glove. It was a fresh take on Feddy that stepped away from the campy style that he had become so associated with and truly made him scary again. I'll never forget watching it in the theater. It was a genius idea.
This is probably my favorite NoES. Wes Craven was in Sceam. He was the school janitor dressed as Freddy. Lin Shaye, the woman from Insidious is also Nancy's English teacher in the original Nightmare, and yes that was her in this movie as the nurse. But my favorite role of hers was Woody Harrelson's gross landlord in Kingpin 😂

I met Heather Langenkamp how about 10 years ago to this day. And she was such an amazing person to talk to as far as her movies that she was in. I couldn't help but gush over the movies she made. She actually ended up moving with her husband out of the country for a little bit while the whole stalker thing played out. I even got a little picture with her and I was able to get an autographed picture from her as well. She was so amazing to chat with. I asked her about every question I could think of!
“Not original, I’ve seen this before in Scream” but you haven’t. Scream was two years later. It’s like when people watch Halloween today and say that Halloween was unoriginal and had all tropes. Yeah, 6 isn't great, but I actually quite like 5. Parts 3-5 make up basically the dream warriors trilogy, which ends up being mainly Alice's story. I personally think they should make a legacy sequel picking up after 5, but that's just me. And honestly, as goofy as 6 is (Freddy's Dead), it's still a fun watch. @@robertyeah2259 absolutely. I'd love if they picked back up with her in the present time. I see her being maybe sort of a gate keeper, trying to keep Freddy from coming back. @@sidnew2739 it's underrated for sure, but I can't in good conscience agree that it's better than 5. I mean, 6 is very, very cartoonish. I still love it though.
Probably the most underrated film in the franchise. Seeing this for the first time in the 90s when it premiered on Sky was such a treat. A true return to form after the absolute joke Freddy had become in the previous installments. Where do you go? .. why you go meta and produce a fresh take on the chracter, brilliant! Original, Dream Warriors, New Nightmare in that order for me as the best in the Elm Street series. The others are worth you watching for the reactions though lol.
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 The Dream Master Along With This One The Original And A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors Are The Very Best In The Entire Franchise They Have The Most Amazing Stories ❤🎉😊
It was a part of the unofficial Nancy-trillogy and they were absollutely the best ones of the Nightmare films. But I remember watching "New Nightmares" the first time and getting goosebumps when John Saxton calls Heather Langencamp, Nancy and she asks him why, only to realises she ingulfed in the movie. The stripe in her hair, and her arm wrapped up kind of easing her into the movie and then the subtle change of outfits, the police lights starting to blink and then the entire house AND THEN thte original score. Such clever build-up :)
I don’t know how to describe it, but the film feels more _scary_ than horrifying or terrifying. In this movie, Heather (the character) felt like a woman desperate to keep her child and husband safe. In the earlier movies, it was more about the protagonist(s) fighting for their lives against Freddy Krueger, and every other character was more collateral damage to Freddy than anything. He killed other characters if they interfered or to demoralize the protagonist(s), rather than targeting them like the protagonists. In this movie, it felt like Heather’s family was the main target, rather than Heather herself. It was like Freddy was scaring her without the immediate intent to kill her-he wanted to hurt her family first, before he murdered her. I view it as a manifestation of fear and anxiety a person has about someone or something harming their loved ones, instead of fearing personal harm.
This is my favorite Nightmare movie. To me, it is _the_ Nightmare movie. I think that this would still be an effective film if there had been no Nightmare series and it were a fictitious in-universe series only. It was the first film in this series that I saw, so I have good reason to feel this way. I also really love the commentary on fairy tales and how getting to the end of the story and how important vanquishing the villain, as Gretel does, is to children.
Good reaction lads. I love this film easily the 2nd best nightmare film, when this came out it was so fresh bringing freddy back to being scary after becoming a comedy act through the period of parts 4-6. The whole meta angle was something new and unlike anything else (although not the 1st , Return to horror high probably gets that) I highly recommend the fan film sequel to this Dylans New Nightmare, released earlier this year starring the guy who played Dylan. Also featuring a worthy successor to Robert Englund as Freddy. I would go personally go straight to freddy vs Jason from here
The perfect trilogy within the series is 1, 3, 7 (New Nightmare). I thought 5 had a good concept. It’s definitely different. Part 6 gives some interesting backstory for Freddy but it can be skipped lol. It’s pretty bad.
2yrs before Wes took on scream, it was just too meta for its time, then scream came along and he nailed it. I love that its the actual directors and producers. Bob Shaye popping up, Sarah Rischer all part of the crew, Love it.
This is my 2nd fave in series, the first being Dream Warriors. You can see the building blocks of the meta aspects for Scream in this. I gotta go try to find the Wonderful World of Disney episode he directed, just to see what he did, lol. I love so much of his other work, like: People Under the Stairs, Vampire in Brooklyn, Shocker, Red Eye, The Serpent and the Rainbow, etc. Just a couple things. Wes only directed the first NoES, and it was his creation, down to the specific colors of the sweater. I don't know where you heard this was the idea for the third one, but that's not right. Rachel Talalay has it available for download (or had b4 the rights issues) and they show parts of it in the documentary Never Sleep Again, but his version was just a lot more surreal & effects heavy and way more vulgar like his earlier movies The Last House on the Left and The Hills have eyes. That's why they didn't end up going with his version... it was too much especially for attempted mainstream access, back then. (Direct quote -- " Kincaid, your a*****e is mine!" and it only got worse, lol.) This specifically came up after like in the movie, Heather experienced a stalker and Wes was having issues with what they did to his creation & a personal slump he was having. He talks about it in Never Sleep Again.
The reason for the makeup difference is that this is what he actually looks like in Wes Craven’s dreams, so the look from the films was their best effort at it.
One creepy thing that hit me hard is the fact Dillian sleepwalks and I SLEEP WALK and have been told I have done so and how hes sleep walking towards a major highway flips me out because WE HAVE A MAJOR HIGHWAY not far from where I live.. Anyone who sleep walks will be hit by this despite the fact any sleep walker can hear the cars without waking up. The fact he screams waking up is as real as it gets because its a shock waking up to a face.
You should see Dylan's New Nightmare. The actor that plays Dylan in this (Miko Hughes) did a fan-made sequel where he's all grown up and experiencing similar things.
In California they do leave bodies in hallway of mortuaries and Med schools The cameo of the director (Wes) and the babysiter and her dad was brilliant. Took me while to place the kid actor. He is the kid from Pet cemetary.
Wes Cravens had degrees in Philosophy and Psychology and taught school as well as having been a professor. There's a lot of philosophical and metaphysical underpinning to his work even though it's done in a way to make it palatable to the masses. Basically, Wes had created a movie character (Freddy) that took on a life of its own and became almost an archetype in the real world. An evil/demonic entity decided that it wanted to use this archetype to hitchhike its way into the real world. The person who created the character in the first place (Wes Craven) HAD to write a new script in order to literally write this entity back OUT of the real world. This Freddy doesn't LOOK like the traditional Freddy because he's NOT the traditional Freddy. It's a demon or dark entity manifesting as THEIR version of Freddy.
OMG guys, who is Robert Eggland? treat this film as the rebirth of horror as it was, a reimagining of it's own tropes! There was a hansel and gretel ref to bind the spirit trap!
5 & 6 ARE bad.... but they are SO BAD that they really shouldn't be missed. There are some absolutely amazing and iconic moments in both films. You should def check them out, even if its just on your own time. cheers!
Love this one. It’s very clever. The original, dream warriors and this are my favourite. So many Easter eggs thru it. Like all the actors from the previous movies at the funeral and call backs to the original.
I really love ‘New Nightmare’ it was quite a feat for Wes Craven to make Freddy scary and fresh again, As bad as 5 and 6 are they still have some good moments, a few memorable kills, and the last 15 mins of Freddy’s Dead is in 3D. A bit cheesy in places but they are well worth checking out.
Freddy's Dead the Final nightmare features Alice Cooper as Freddy's dad, there are also Cameos from Johnny Depp, Rosanne Barr & her then husband Tom Arnold, we also find out he has a daughter
I think that the fresh take was a great direction to go. But i also agree that there were parts that were unimaginative.. this movie woudk jave been better of the kills were more interesting
Not that you would know this but where her husband can be a three hour trip one way from Los Angeles, especially with our traffic so when I heard that being an LA native I thought it was a lite traffic day.
I was briefly confused about why on earth the guys were laughing at that line, then remembered that they're British, so of course a 3-hour drive would sound ridiculous to them!
If you look at the coller and sleves on Freddy's sweater in past movies they are always red cus he has a red sweater with green stripes but the demon in this movie has the reverse it has a green sweater with red stripes that's another clever little clue that it's not Freddy Krueger
This is one of the best from the serie. I love it with the 1st and 3rd. Great idea sharing real life and movie. Good movie for sure. The kid is bored at the beginning but better at the end. Heather is still great, and Robert is good as he use to, (Tom u're cute ^^)
Guys honestly you might as well take your time and watch all Friday the 13th and Elm Street movies before Freddy vs Jason and then after Freddy vs Jason watch the Remakes of both franchise
I had discovered the Nightmare series when I was 9, 1 to 5 were already out by that time, and 6 was about to come. I became an instant fan, but I was too young to see 6 in theater, so I had to wait for it to be released in VHS. So when this one came out, and me being just over 12 (maybe 13, the time it crosses the Atlantic), It was the first one I'll discovered in theater, and also my first horror movie to play the "mise en abyme" card (a term that I prefer to "meta" here, cause it's not at all meta the same way Scream is meta). And it was the first movie in the franchise to actually scared me because of its concept. - BTW, did you notice that in the ending credits, as all the actors are listed as "himself" or "herself", Freddy Krueger is also listed as "Himself", and not played by Robert Englund. - The theme of the movie is also excellent, and is my fav theme of the all franchise. It really emphasizes the menace that Freddy is. So I'll definitely rank it high on my list of the Nightmare movies, actually, I rank it second, just after the first one, because of the dropping of the rhythm in the middle part (an other murder between Chase and July would ave been appreciated), and because of the bad SFXes at the end. But if it wasn't for those two points, it may even have surpassed the original for me.
Such a great film, my fav of the series. Love the idea of a movie that deals with the themes of how powerful storytelling can be, to the point a villain finds his way into the real world, via an ancient evil entity. And yes, that was Robert Englund playing this Freddy. Gotta disagree with you on the look of this Freddy, I loved it! Thought it was absolutely terrifying, and he was so much more menacing than movie Freddy ever was. Such a great design too. Although I feel like some of the themes went over your head, good reaction fellas.
I think you two should definitely give CUJO a watch. The child acting is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. It takes a bit to get going, but once it does it will get your attention due to the nature of the situation. It’s a movie that can give you mixed emotions.
If you’ve watched up to 5 for the Friday franchise you’ve got to watch part 6: Jason Lives!!! It’s the best one! I also love 7, X, & FvsJ. The remake is one of, if not, the strongest in the franchise. Unfortunately you’ll need to watch Jason Goes To Hell to see how Freddy and Jason come together though.
Wes Craven didn't direct ANOES 3, he wrote it. You don't have to have seen 5 and FDTFN, just know that the story has officially ended by then. Do go back and watch them and FvJ anyway. IMO the ranking goes 1,3, New Nightmare, 4, FvJ, 5, 2, FDTFN But depending on my mood, 1 and 3 are interchangeable, as are 4 with WCNN and FvJ, and also 2 with 5 and FDTFN. 1 is the best on a first viewing/introduction to the series concept. 3 is the best on rewatches. Watch Freddy's Dead before Jason Goes To Hell, THEN watch Freddy vs Jason. Just watch all of both franchises (in order from here on-this was the exception). How are you just gonna skip any?! Crappy movies can still allow great reactions. Content is content.
19:00 You actually called it - from that point ON ... Heather never woke up from that dream - so the hospital then the chase over the highway - a dream (we can assume the babysitter was dragged into their nightmare and is dead)
Freddy had become such a wisecracking joke at this point and they killed him off. You didn’t watch it but Freddy’s Dead almost felt like a straight up comedy at times. I like this different spin on it, where it isn’t actually Freddy but a demon modeled after him and this is the scariest the villain has been since Part 2. I think this design for Freddy actually looks scarier.
Just discovered you guys today. Love the chemistry and banter. Been looking for a new reaction page and you guys are great. Also, I’m a sucker for handsome guys with English accents haha cheers fellas
I don't think many people catch this (even when it came out) but the glove in this one seems to be modeled after the glove in the original US movie poster
I personally think Nightmare 5 is a bit underrated. I actually like it more than 4. But given how the storyline is closely related to 4 and it’s been awhile for you guys and it’s nowhere near a “great” film you’d be fine skipping out on 5 and 6 (6 is an absolute stinker but you could watch it as a comedy I guess) It’s fine to go right into Freddy vs. Jason for it. When it comes to Jason you definitely have to watch Part 6: Jason Lives. It’s the best one. Any sequels after that are fine to skip if you feel like it. Each installment has its share of fans but they’re more like guilty pleasures instead of actual good films, so it’s up to you guys. I’ll watch all of your reactions to ‘em so keep ‘em coming! :)
Freddy Vs. Jason is a MUST to react to! It’s not high art, but it’s crazy entertaining. Nightmare 5 & 6 are skippable, unless you want to be completists. Same with the Friday movies, although Part 6 is a fan favorite.
I really enjoy this film and love the meta elements - the only real issue is that you need almost the entire runtime for the meta elements to pay off, which basically protects a bunch of the characters and makes the evil Demon seem like less of a threat because nothing all that bad is actually happening compared to original Freddy for a lot of it.
Shaun is "that guy" in the film class. lol I will say that after watching the complete franchise (up until this point) this movie is elevated after making the trudge through the previous movies. Complaining about this one when you haven't seen the complete works is off putting. And fredick's (teehee) look was supposed to draw comparison to the witch in Hansel and Grettle (like the end of the movie) with his face being more split opened than burned/broiled/charred look. I think A Nightmare on Elm Street and Wes Craven's New Nightmare are perfect book ends to the series. And 5&6 are better than the remake (imo)
The really shitty reality is that Hollywood was and is so completely owned by nepotism that they wouldn't hire Heather Langenkamp for anything other than this franchise, despite being gorgeous and charismatic, because she wasn't "someone" outside of it. It's one thing when productions hire people with questionable talent because of family connections, but the other side is that they almost never hire anyone else even when there's clear talent on display.
I remember this was in the movies when it came out,how time flies. Please react to these 2 british movies:See no evil-1971 and Fright-1971 and The night digger-1971.
14:25--The mortican that shows Heather the body is W. Earl Brown, who did a few more films with Wes Craven including VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN and SCREAM fans remember him as Kenny, Gale's camera man (but he's probably best known for playing Mary's brother Warren in THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY)

And maybe Jacob is a reluctant dream warrior, just trying to live a normal life with a wife and kids, but they all get pulled back into it and have to be badasses. That's how I'd write it anyway lol.
She also was in a reality show called Milf Manor. lol I hate that I know that lol
6 is very underrated and a lot better than 5.
@@sidnew2739 it's underrated for sure, but I can't in good conscience agree that it's better than 5. I mean, 6 is very, very cartoonish. I still love it though.
Robert Englund did play Freddy Krueger in this movie.
The end credits being a jump scare is hilarious. LMAOOOOOO!
Freddy's Dead (part 6) is actually good. It gets into the backstory of Freddy's character.
It's easily the worst film in the series.
Freddy's Dead is an embarrassing dumpster fire.
I watched this one a lot when I was a child, it proper freaked me out 🤣
I don’t know how to describe it, but the film feels more _scary_ than horrifying or terrifying.
This is most definitely one of the best freddy movies after the first 3. One of my favorites too! Great reaction you guys ❤
Good reaction lads. I love this film easily the 2nd best nightmare film, when this came out it was so fresh bringing freddy back to being scary after becoming a comedy act through the period of parts 4-6.
The whole meta angle was something new and unlike anything else (although not the 1st , Return to horror high probably gets that)
I highly recommend the fan film sequel to this Dylans New Nightmare, released earlier this year starring the guy who played Dylan. Also featuring a worthy successor to Robert Englund as Freddy.
I would go personally go straight to freddy vs Jason from here
I've never seen anyone jump scared to a title screen.😂 Chef's kiss
It's the same kid who played Gage in 1989's Pet Sematary. I'm sure he was a seasoned veteran by this movie.
Wes Craven originally wanted a taller, built actor to play Freddy which is part of why he looked so different in this movie.
Thanks, Shaun! Thanks, Tom! 😨 I enjoyed this one... and was fortunate to catch it in the cinema.
NOES Pt.2 & New Nightmare are the darkest of the Freddy characterizations. Love them both. Aling with 3 & 4, they are the best in the series. IMO.
“It’s not like he is going to reference the movies” xD
The reason for the makeup difference is that this is what he actually looks like in Wes Craven’s dreams, so the look from the films was their best effort at it.
This was an excellent review guys... I've never seen anyone jump at the credits like that before, this was gold ..🤘
Did that actually come out? I was interested in it once I heard about it
In California they do leave bodies in hallway of mortuaries and Med schools
The cameo of the director (Wes) and the babysiter and her dad was brilliant.
I love this franchise, but this movie is my absolute favorite of them all! West Craven was ahead of his time!
A lot of scary movies gave me nightmares, Freddy just made me want a clove with knifes. Born 77
Bob Shaye played so many bit riles in these films. So fun to see him as himself. Sara Risher also plays herself
The finger glove in this movie had a fifth knife on the thumb. In all the other films it was just four knives.
this is my favorite of the whole franchise and honestly the only one I take the initiative to rewatch multiple times.
Love this movie and the meta aspect definitely fed into Scream which came out a year or two later.
If you look at the coller and sleves on Freddy's sweater in past movies they are always red cus he has a red sweater with green stripes but the demon in this movie has the reverse it has a green sweater with red stripes that's another clever little clue that it's not Freddy Krueger
I liked your guy`s theory on their being a stalker who pretends that he`s Freddy.
This is one of the best from the serie. I love it with the 1st and 3rd.
Great idea sharing real life and movie.
Good movie for sure.
The kid is bored at the beginning but better at the end.
Heather is still great, and Robert is good as he use to,
(Tom u're cute ^^)
Love your reactions guys, but I got to say “Robert England” now has multiple last Names lol😂 keep it up guys!
Guys honestly you might as well take your time and watch all Friday the 13th and Elm Street movies before Freddy vs Jason and then after Freddy vs Jason watch the Remakes of both franchise
The remakes are horrible, not worth watching.
@@kimberlyjeanne9456 Elm Street Remake is terrible but worth the watch for the interesting new concepts
Friday the 13th Remake is really good
I had discovered the Nightmare series when I was 9, 1 to 5 were already out by that time, and 6 was about to come.
The theme of the movie is also excellent, and is my fav theme of the all franchise.
Wes Craven made the original film based on a nightmare he kept having about a man stalking him.
IMO the ranking goes 1,3, New Nightmare, 4, FvJ, 5, 2, FDTFN
But depending on my mood, 1 and 3 are interchangeable, as are 4 with WCNN and FvJ, and also 2 with 5 and FDTFN.
FUN FACT: Wes Craven based the first movie on a real story in the newspaper about college kids that were mysteriously dying in their sleep.
Freddie’s make up is different in this film
as he is a demon.
He has been a demon before.
New Nightmare was a return to form. And I loved the meta aspect.
19:00 You actually called it - from that point ON ... Heather never woke up from that dream - so the hospital then the chase over the highway - a dream (we can assume the babysitter was dragged into their nightmare and is dead)
29:40 makes all this video worth it.
The hospital scene was always unsettling to me 😖
If you'd seen Freddy's Dead, the natural progression of campiness would have softened the shock you seem to be experiencing to "New Freddy"
But given how the storyline is closely related to 4 and it’s been awhile for you guys and it’s nowhere near a “great” film you’d be fine skipping out on 5 and 6 (6 is an absolute stinker but you could watch it as a comedy I guess)
It’s fine to go right into Freddy vs.
Just watch them all in order of release
You guys should watch Freddy vs Jason at some point.
Did these guys ever get to the fun Friday the 13th movies? Part 6: Jason Lives was like New Nightmare/Scream before it was cool to be self referential
I loved this take on Freddy this is my second favorite in the franchise after the 1st one. Thanks for the reaction guys 🥰
Shaun is "that guy" in the film class. lol
I will say that after watching the complete franchise (up until this point) this movie is elevated after making the trudge through the previous movies.
He was also on the show Deadwood.
@@greed13X He's been in nearly everything (he was briefly in Reese Witherspoon's WILD as well)
This is one of my favourites from the franchise. Also love the original, the sequel and the 3rd one
Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI is often considered one if not the best in the series by a lot of fans.
5 is worth watching in my opinion. Freddy vs. Jason and Jason X are just fun. Jason Goes to Hell is actually an interesting concept.
Oh yeah, and the remake sucks!
If we ever get another Elm Street remake, I hope that Freddy acts a bit more like this version
