Below 3 years old, do not use communicative devices and focus on teaching communication and play.
Between 3 - 4 years old - you CAN start introducing communication devices as a supplement to teach prelinguistic skills. Only use this if your child is non-verbal and at your therapist’s discretion.
4 years old and up, sit down and decide whether communication devices can be a long-term solution. It depends on what your child’s speech abilities are. Moreover, you have to be 100% on board with using the device at home. The child’s feelings need to be addressed as well, because it will make him/her look different at school. Make sure everyone is on the same page before implementing.

Trouble is therapists don’t know when to take these things away. I found that PECS had been hindering my child from talking, as soon as I removed it (against therapist’s advice/wishes), my kid started to use WORDS to ask for things that very day!!! She was 4.5 years. The PECS had obviously been stopping her from talking, I don’t know how long for.
My personal view: PECS is good as an introduction to the concept of communication (for ASD kids) but if a child starts to use words, even just occasionally to ask for things while on PECS, it really needs to be removed so that the child is given an opportunity to develop spoken language. As a mother, I feel really guilty about this as her speech is still vastly behind, I guess didn’t know any better.

You're right, everything that helps a child needs to be faded out

Yes, PECS hindered speech in my child’s case. See above.
