I highly suggest looking up the wasteland scanner and hydra, which are probably the most interesting ones that got cut from the final game. The NPCs shown are even better in the HL2 beta and the mods for retail that recreate it, but this addon does a pretty good job too! Yes, the antlion guard was originally to have an exoskeleton so strong that bullets would do nothing to it, requiring you to kill it with other weapons. How dangerous antlion guards were was shown off in an E3 beta map where you see one slaughtering a squad of Combine soldiers before flipping over an APC and finally getting killed by a blast from the belly cannon of a gunship. Thank God that was changed! I don't even remember from playing the beta leak a few years ago if you can even kill it with explosives. The blood-covered beta headcrabs had a short animation that would play when they were in leaping distance before jumping at you. There is an even earlier reddish-orange headcrab that came before it, along with a different zombie model (called the "fat zombie" because it looked like it was bloated). The zombine was indeed cut from Half-Life 2 and was reused for the episodes.
12:51 actually both the houndeyes and bullsquids were cut from the game, which sucks a lot because the resonance cascade was like a world wide event thing because portals didn’t only appear in Black Mesa but also OUTSIDE of black mesa in towns and stuff, BUT the good news is Marc Laidlaw said in an interview that houndeyes are around somewhere, so they are canon in Half-Life 2, they just aren’t IN half-life 2.
