I say that largely because the first world war was the beginning of the modern world as we know it. Without the second world war, Britain would have remained a global superpower and America would never have become one. Given how much of modern technology was developed during second world war and the cold war that followed, one can only wonder what kind of world we would live in today had Franz Ferdinand not been assassinated.

How is the assassination of Ferdinand less important than the deaths of Lennon, MLK, or Kennedy? It sparked what is dubbed 'the Great War', I think that's all that needs to be said on the matter.
While, I think you could argue about MLK's being placed higher on the list, lets be honest, Lennon's murder probably elevated him above the rest of the Beatles, despite the fact that he was almost certainly not the most talented (I think McCartney and Harrison were the two most talented as demonstrated by the quality of their output following the break-up of the Beatles... meanwhile other than two songs (Imagine and Happy Xmas), Lennon's post Beatles career was mostly him being John Lennon.

How is the assassination of Ferdinand less important than the deaths of Lennon, MLK, or Kennedy? It sparked what is dubbed 'the Great War', I think that's all that needs to be said on the matter.
While, I think you could argue about MLK's being placed higher on the list, lets be honest, Lennon's murder probably elevated him above the rest of the Beatles, despite the fact that he was almost certainly not the most talented (I think McCartney and Harrison were the two most talented as demonstrated by the quality of their output following the break-up of the Beatles... meanwhile other than two songs (Imagine and Happy Xmas), Lennon's post Beatles career was mostly him being John Lennon.
Hi post-beatles career was about causes. He wrote "Give Peace a Chance" "Imagine" "Happy X-Mas" "Working Class Hero" and they are all classics, perhaps some of the most famous anti-war and socially critical songs ever made. One top of that he combined that with memorable activism against war, it inspired a whole generation, and people like me, born in the 80's, to be anti-war. BTW my #1 favorite song is "Real Love" take 4. Just John Lennon on the piano.

I did visit the John Lennon Memorial in Central Park last year. It's a mosaic tile with the word "IMAGINE" in the center. It's located just right across from where Lennon was shot. When I was there, someone began to play a guitar. It was an experience.
