Flush screens suck. I sold my oasis 2 to get a libra 2 and would never go back. While it might not seem like a night and day difference just looking at them briefly, in using them there was. I used my Kindle Oasis for a long time, and I could never shake the feeling that it wasn't as good as my old paperwhite. I always had issues where the text seemed slightly soft and my eyes struggled to focus as if it was trying to be sharp but it never really got there. It really caused me reading strain. And I have excellent vision with no glasses. Ultimately through comparing other e-readers, after finding this was the case, I noticed that all of the sunken screens with no glass were significantly less strainful. My eyes focused on the text and it appeared sharper. The contrast may also be a little bit better although infinitesimally so. But since I've got my Libra 2, there's zero comparison for me. I simply can't use glass screen e-readers as it adds a level of obstruction that truly does degrade the reading experience for me. I'm not saying every time I read a book it was some horrible experience, but there were so many times where I would just start reading and feel like something was off and I could never really focus the text to its sharpest degree. This can't be fixed by a setting change, because the issue is with the edge of the rendered text being diffused slightly by the glass. With either style, I still don't like the contrast at night when using a front light. Compared to an iPad mini It is a joke. I still prefer the ereader for a few reasons, but I wish the contrast was twice as good. Reading with dark mode on reveals the screen is 50% gray. I wish that were closer to black so that the contrast using the front light was less washed out at night.
True. I would never put any cleaner on a screen, that isn’t protected by a glass layer. I like the white, but just the sunken screen makes it impractical for me.
I've heard this argument a lot, but in the few years I've been using my Libra 2 and putting it in my bags and traveling with it, I've never had a single issue with dust. I can use a cleaning cloth for glasses and just rub it around the screen, and I haven't had any issues. Maybe if you read on the beach or something this might be an issue, but personally I haven't seen it myself. And I have never once had the screen be so dirty I needed any cleaner. I agree that a glass screen seems like it would be simply easier to clean more aggressively. But in my real experience I haven't found that to be necessary personally.
interesting that the camera records the black unit as crisper and the white unit have vastly different gamma curve when showing baseball PDF. Seems someone that planning to do comparison like this need to place a calibration card in the middle and around the camera view.
I currently have a white Kobo Libra H2O, and it too has the sunken bezel. I’ve just always felt like the screen is more delicate. Glass is just easier to clean. For this reason… although I prefer my electronics to be any color other than black, I’ll have to go with the black on this one (if I decide to go with this over a Pocketbook ereader)
Thank you for these comparisons. The light reflection was really interesting to me, I would have expected the opposite as well. Do you think the lower reflectivity of the black also applies in a generally bright space (like sitting in front of a window) as well as a focused light source?
It's very easy to explain physically: a thin glare-reducing layer of Asahi glass (flexible) has to make the grayscale boundaries appear a little less sharp, increases the stability of the device, a little the weight and a black frame brightens the picture. Those are the differences. I have a black Tolino Vision 6 (Kobo Libra 2) and a black Leaf 2 and I can't see any difference in image quality

Thank you, guys! Nice video as always :) I've ordered a white one, just waiting for it to arrive. Both devices look amazing!
I'd go with back. Prefer black bezels. perhaps I prefer whiter whites more than blacker blacks too. Every time you said white looked better I thought to myself "I prefer the look on the black model"
Thank you for this video! I'm thinking of getting one :) I keep hearing that the white version would be better due to its sunken screen and such (I don't particularly know much about e-readers), so I was going to get a white one. But seeing this video, I think I kind of prefer the black version for being slightly darker? I'm someone who uses phones and such on the lowest brightness setting because lights tend to hurt/give me headaches, so I think the greyer screen of the black version might be better too in the long run. But I still have a while to think about it :D
When I compared white/black kindles it had the same screen but the bezel color made a perception difference (like the orange vs brown thing). Could you cover the bezel and do a comparison?
Thanks for the detailed review. It would be great if you could do another video comparing both of them to the previous Leaf from yesteryear for those considering an upgrade.
Is there any hurdle when it comes to gestures on the white one? On my leaf1 i am often swiping from the bottom up, so I am wondering if that is made harder with the sunken bezel design on the white leaf2? Also is the the screen more sensitive on the white one, so you have to be more careful when touching? Great video!
At 5:35, you can really see the difference when looking at the front of Kris Bryant's shirt. You can't even see the natural folds in the cloth on the black one.
It's hard to come across on camera, but the black one was more hazy, washed out and fuzzy, while the white had no hindrances making it more crisp and far more rich
Not even close via the video - look at the baseball player on both on any portion of your video. Middle or at the end of the player / black device looks 1000 times better. More details.
If you focus on readability and immersion, which one should you choose, white or black? I heard that instead of White being less immersive, Black is less readable, but it is more immersive Is it right?
Which one you would choose between the sunken leaf 2 vs Kobo libra 2? Which one has better screen? And which one is better overall? I need to decide within this week.
Im using kobo libra 2 and satisfied. But the Leaf has android, it’s the big advantage since you can read anything. If you only need to read basic epub and some pdf, Libra 2 is better in screen, battery, and price
@@illmin7 I have both and can't tell which screen is better. Libra 2 screen performs and looks exactly as the white Leaf 2. Why do you think Libra 2 screen is better? Libra 2 is $180, but Leaf 2 $200 price includes the cover, at least now and in the official store.
When looking at the image around 5:37 the sunken has blacker blacks but the flush has noticeably more detail all around…any thoughts? Im looking at this primarily for manga reading…
Personally, I would recommend getting a reader with an 8" screen. 7" is mostly okay, but I had to squint a lot when reading manga on my late Kindle Oasis. Now I have Kobo Sage and like it much more. The screen is perfect! Manga looks really crisp. The downsides are the poor battery life and inconsistent page turn buttons. Onyx also have readers of similar size, for example the new Nova Air 2.
@moreuse points this out too with detail of Baseball cover. When Baseball cover is both full screen and shown thumbnail- look at the player’s face and uniform. The black leaf 2 has much more detail and contrast compared to the white leaf 2. This would translate to better manga imagery. Whether it is due to the whiter background of black leaf 2 repeatedly mentioned in video, we can only guess. For as much as this channel relies on the Baseball cover kind of ironic this difference went unnoticed. The white looked so gray on Baseball cover it’d be interesting to throw the nova air c in for comparison- the black’s screen would really pop
@@giallobiafra3277 but this is just because he had the setting set up equally on both devices even though one had different screen characteristics (glass). I bet after adjusting setting you can get the white looking better than the black

Great video again! Looking forward to get one for my wife. Got the Tab Ultra on the way for myself which I will mostly use for work planning and work on documents plus keeping a daily journal. Thinking of getting one of these for myself for reading, because of size and portability. Your opinion?
Interesting comparison! I have a request, though. When you do the LED backlight test, can you please cover a real-life case scenario? Personally, if I read at night, I would never pass the 25% of brightness... most of the time, I don't even reach the 10%, actually. The case scenario covered in this review (80 to 100% of brightness) is most likely useless for the average user. My 2 cents. Also, thanks so much for your helpful videos as always!
I'm with you on that thinking. I have my Oasis on the lowest light setting possible that allows me to still read text, often having to increase font size from normal reading, but I still have to block the light output from the reader with my body to allow spouse to sleep. I can't wait to see how my white Leaf 2 arriving this week will compare. No e-reader review has ever taking the reader down to lowest light level yet still be readable. Peter does at least show us night view modes usually, so that has always been good to see.. just not quite good enough, lol
I received and compared the Leaf 2 low-light ability against the Dark mode of the Kindle Oasis 2, and the next day put the Leaf 2 up for sale. I really only am interested in the lowest light emitted for in bed reading that still allows not struggling to see the text. Dark mode of the Oasis 2 just trumps the warmth ability of the Leaf 2. Without Dark Mode, the Oasis 2's blue/white glow projects more light and the Leaf 2 using warmth is better. I then ordered the Oasis 3 and did a comparison again against the Oasis 2. Result? With same content, same font and size and low-light level at 3, both the Oasis 2 and Oasis 3 look the same as expected. When I instead cranked up the warmth on the Oasis 3 and turned down or off the normal light (I forget and don't have my notes with me), the Oasis 3 is obviously a much better low-light reader than the Oasis 2. I can see the text better with less light projecting.
@@zombeezy6548 thanks for commenting! so, after all, the problem with the leaf is that it doesn't have a dark mode/inverted color mode? otherwise, the light diffusion is okay? (compared to oasis 3, for example)
@@NicKoterba I placed the Oasis 2, Leaf 2 and Oasis 3 on their edges in a dark room to see which one projected the light output the least, and the Leaf 2, because it does not have Dark Mode, projected the most light the furthest. Since I could add warmth to the Oasis 3 Dark Mode, it projected a smaller distance with less brightness than the Dark Mode of Oasis 2 similar to how a white light bulb is brighter than a yellow light bulb. Besides that, the Leaf 2, for my purposes also was not as smooth an experience for reading Kindle books as either of the dedicated Oasis e-readers, and let's face it, the Leaf 2 is a multi-purpose device that will do many things. I realized that I would never surf the internet or listen music with it, and the Oasis 3 was a better choice. The Oasis 3 really should have been a much better device than the Oasis 2 but it is only due to warmth mode, not due to being faster. Otherwise, I'd still be using the Oasis 2. I also had an issue with balancing the Leaf 2 between crispness of text and the annoyance of needing more refreshes against speed of page turning. I only tested this with the Kindle app vs a Kindle reading experience built-in on the Oasis 3. Leaf 2 Kindle app reading was acceptable but not as satisfying as on any Paperwhite / Oasis device. Probably worth finding a Leaf 2 in a local store to try out first.

Also, I think (and it could have been settings for refreshes) that the white version, without that extra layer on top, also seemed to show more bleed-thru of previous page

Is there a lot of plastic bezel overscan on the white version? The screen of the black leaf 2 looks a tiny bit wider and taller. Or is it just an optical illusion? Edit: I picked up the white version of the Leaf 2. I'm really happy with it. Ty!
harder to clean, breaks easier, more reflective apparently, worst whites, scratches easier, and some people prefer the look of the black bezels compared to the double white/gray bezels
@@supreme3647 I don't understand the breaks easier argument. Glass also smashes easily. Sunken will only break if you drop something directly on it or step on it etc
Typically glass screens are more rigid, screen will last longer as it is protected by more layers, but obviously glass is more brittle and once you get a run in the glass, it will break
i honestly don't see a difference in contrast or anything. but you are kind of running on fumes on the black one. so it's not exactly an oranges to oranges comparison.
The entire transaction with Boox was very suspicious. Communication emails were incomplete. Receipt did not even describe the product and items bought. The receipt only shows price paid and buyer shipping address. The item came from Canada, but return address is in China. On top of the return shipping cost Boox charges 30% restocking fee. Does the button work on the Kindle app?
Yes
@@goodereader Is there a setting I need to change for it to work? or will it work right away as soon as I install the app?
you can go to settings then side switch settings then click "use volume buttons as page turner" if you use the kindle app.
@@trishalim14 Thank you. Really appreciate it.
Is the back of leaf 2 supposed to be flat? Mine is slightly rounded. Is it okay?
Why can't we get the sunken model in black colour? I don't like devices that are anything other than black
The flush has better waterproofing right?
Neither of them are waterproof as they have an SD slot
@@elenacama1419 since when is having an sd card slot contrary to being waterproof. waterproof mainstream smartphones with sd card are a thing. and have been for about 10 years now.
Is there a boox device with waterproofing?
I like white one
It's looking really nice, yeah.
Interesting comparison. Thanks! :)
Hi. Can it be used while charging? or with a connected power bank?
Yes of course. It's a tablet
Helpful comparison. Does the Leaf 2 have any water resistance?
None
This review sounds like me comparing my Paperwhite 5 and Libra 2 😅. Sunken is just sharper, if a little greyer. Any reason why they can’t laminate a flush layer of glass to the eink screen to cut out the clarity problem?
Each additional layer degrades the image quality - there is no other way
Is there a lot of plastic bezel overscan on the white version? The screen of the black leaf 2 looks a tiny bit wider and taller. Or is it just an optical illusion?
Edit: I picked up the white version of the Leaf 2. I'm really happy with it. Ty!
does it matter that the black one had barley any battery ?
I planned to buy the black one but this video makes me confused TT
Hey there, I'm not sure what is confusing.
The white has a sunken screen, and the black doesn't
Thank you
The white definitely looks better. It would be also good for writing (less distance from pen to ink) but I don't remember if the leaf had a pen...
No, the leaf does not have any note taking. That is what the Nova air is for :)
I dont think you can do note taking with a sunken screen. You need the wacom layer or something like that.
One can, yes :)
Mimas and rm1 and King Jim Freno and mobiscribe
Could you potentially take notes with an active stylus?
I’m gonna buy this 2 colour for me and sis.😂
Is it support pen?
Who wouldn’t get the sunken ? It’s much better for anything
harder to clean, breaks easier, more reflective apparently, worst whites, scratches easier, and some people prefer the look of the black bezels compared to the double white/gray bezels
@@supreme3647 I don't understand the breaks easier argument. Glass also smashes easily. Sunken will only break if you drop something directly on it or step on it etc
@@northernswedenstories1028that's what I also figured however I am not very savvy on the technical details of these devices
In my eyes, White is better. How do you think? If you buy one of your children, what would you choose?
Typically glass screens are more rigid, screen will last longer as it is protected by more layers, but obviously glass is more brittle and once you get a run in the glass, it will break
@@goodereader Asahi glass is flexible
i honestly don't see a difference in contrast or anything. but you are kind of running on fumes on the black one. so it's not exactly an oranges to oranges comparison.
You constantly say this and that. Saying black and white would be far more helpful to people who listen to the video.
They say refund will take many weeks. I do not recommend this product.
There is a website with almost the exact same web address that sells scam products I believe. I almost ordered from it before I learned that one of the sites was a scam. So I figure picking one of these up at Best Buy instead would be your best bet and guarantee of authenticity
Im so freaking confused which one to buy. Because the white one has better black intensity whereas the black one has better white screen 😂 also the others poke5 vs page the more i watch the more i like them both is onyx boox playing a game with us
Sunken is superior to me
We honestly think so too.
Reading content on the white Leaf 2, I kept thinking (with fond memories) of my old Sony PRS350SC Pocket Edition Reader, circa 2011. Of course, I had to root it to sideload books, but without a case and the sunken screen, the Sony was great. The Leaf 2 white (while I had it) was a nice experience to hold in one hand to read without needing a case to help me hold it.
One day theyll have cellular... one day.
why would you want that?
Прекрасный анализ!

"Peter, you're a nice guy, but your just not dependable" Mr. Aziz
Sorry, we do not get the reference and Peter does not do the TH-cam comments. But thank you very much for your comments :-)
I'll admit, I don't get it either. Peter seems very dependable in what we expect in a review or opinion. Maybe I am missing a point?
No difference
Yes there is. There is a noticeable difference between the two as one of them has a few more layers of plastics involved.
Both variants are a piece of junk
No they aren't
