It blew my mind to learn that the plague doctor character was not a mythical creature thought to be spreading the outbreak, or a medieval concept of the Grim Reaper, but rather an honest-to-god human being in a primitive biohazard suit, trying to do what is right. I don't know why, but learning this makes me more afraid of them than I ever was before. Unfortunately, due to their lack of success, the costume probably was an early concept of the Grim Reaper. A plague doctor rarely (if ever) meant that a patient would recover and get back to their normal life. It meant that death was on its way.
@@laurasmith6168 yep watched this in 6th grade during Halloween dress up day or whatever and people call me plague doctor so i was that and this had to be played in my school and it was MADNESS
I don't find the topic morbid at all. The topic is obviously really interesting to the guy which is why he's smiling so often, but I think just the amount of times the guy keeps smiling makes it strange. I don't mind smiling but this guy is raising his eyebrows and full on smiling (showing all of his teeth) which implies that he's really interested, which is, in a way, sort of offputting.
The coats they wore were coated with wax, which protected them very well against fleas and infected putule blood as they also tucked their leather pantaloons into their boots. This combined with a hood, mask and hat granted them full immunity from the plague, hence why the look is so iconic.
I first thought the iconic plague figure was a mythical creature thought to be spreading the plague. Either that, or a medieval concept of the Grim Reaper. It blew my mind to learn that it was an ordinary human being inside a primitive biohazard suit, who was a doctor trying to do what is best for the infected patients and society.
they wouldnt really try their best, they knew that they were screwed, so they would usually do fake antidote to get money, hell they werent even real doctors they werent qualified as a real doctor
If this man was my professor i will no doubt learn more-Edit: I dont find him ugly or visually ill. I find him interesting and the way he explains is so clear and captivating, so i am inclined to learn more that way.
Plague doctors are amazing. I love the early biohazard suits too. And here's the best part. Since the suits completely concealed the doctors body, including the mask. If the plague was spread the coughing or water droplets in the air, the doctor had a mask and was safe since no skin was exposed. And since the doctors wore wax covered suits, their bodies were protected like he said from fleas which unintentionally, blocked the ways you catch the plague. Meaning doctors had less chance of catching plague. So if a real outbreak happens in modern day and your caught in the middle. This would be a good cheap, makeshift bio-containment suit. I'd love to purchase one in the future. And you'd look badass too.
Can people stop calling this man ugly? It's very rude. And so what if his teeth aren't the best? He's obviously getting old and when you get older your teeth start to rot. How would you like it if you were that man and everyone starred calling you ugly? You'd be offended wouldn't you? So stop being ignorant and rude and have some respect for other people
Minor things here... The robes a plague doctor wore consisted of thick Moroccan leather impregnated with a slick oil and were also slicked with oil prior to entry into a plague house to keep "the disease" from attaching itself to the doctor. Additionally, the doctors wore a leather head piece that was tucked into the mask to provide a (mostly) air tight seal, and tall heavy leather boots. In reality the dress was extremely effective and the doctors didn't get sick even after diagnosing sick patients all day. You were correct when you said a doctor noted that flees couldn't a fix themselves to the doctor due to the dress and that's what made it so incredibly effective. Unfortunately the same doctor noted that flees were just a mere annoyance and weren't suspected to be the cause of the disease. Finally, the stick was used to issue orders, guide, inspect, diagnose, and at times force back panicked infected persons.
As far as I'm aware, the suits were worn by all or most doctors as it was their standard gear for the profession. They were somewhat effective in the sense that they had an early filtration system and stopped the fleas from getting on you.
the staff was there so they dont come in contact with the person with the plague. they would examine them with it, for example. lifting up their shirt. moving their head side to side and so on.
I asked my father for a plague doctor outfit, My mother completely hated the idea of me and my friend being plague doctors but my dad approves. *i’m* *going* *to* *target* *in* *a* *plague* *doctor* *outfit*
My 9 yr old son is doing this for Halloween... It scared so much one day when he was little and seen me watching a documentary, that now, at 9, when I asked him if he wanted to be scary or.... He said Yaaa, I want to be that Dr that wore that scary bird mask. Lol, it must have stuck in his craw all these yrs later... 😉🐦🐦
In that time period plague doctors wouldn’t have had such short “beaks” to their masks and nor would metal be readily available to them or those in their social class to make something like a doctor’s mask
The stick was used to exam them the doctors didn’t want to get too close to look at them so the stick was used to uncover the blanket touch there face and check their body so they would have no contact with them
Don't blame him he's not scary at all he's being nice and helpful

Yes, there is nothing scary about his face he’s teaching us history about the bubonic plague.
I agree with u... The others are just being childish
I though he was normal and nice in my opinion he scarded me though the smirk he gave me when he did take the mask of though but it wasnt his face

It is easy to understand why people thought disease came from bad smells. After all, bad smells do make you feel ill.
Those masks must have been really terrifying to the dying and their families.
It was they were like the living embodiment of death. Since the plague almost always kills.
I first thought the iconic plague figure was a mythical creature thought to be spreading the plague. Either that, or a medieval concept of the Grim Reaper.

When you saw a plague doctor back then, death was to come
That was why plague doctors became associated with death.

His facial features are very unique.
Makes want to see what else this man has to tell.
Yeah right? I noticed that too.
"The Plague Doctor" is a popular costume in the Carnival of Venice.

They also used the stick to order the patients to do something or go somewhere without touching them.
The stick was used for touching the sick patients and not poking and touching them, it was also used for what you just said :)

He looks really creepy without the mask his smile looks so sinister he would make a great part in a scary movie
I wonder what it was like to wear one of those suits in 1665.
