Social media doesn't work for all kinds of artists unfortunately.. I've noticed that story driven illustrations and objectively pretty/attractive art does great, but I also see a lot of amazing environments and visdev projects that don't get any engagement in comparison, because there's simply not enough audience for it :/ It can become very frustrating and uninspiring to cater to social media and keep all these things in mind - if you don't naturally have an attractive style or social media presence
there's an audience for everything its more about do you fit the image the platform wants. I wish instagram went full on mimicking tiktok because so many random niches thrive on tik tok because the algorithm isn't so tight about its image through and through. It's not enough for ig to simply push aesthetically pleasing work to the front page of the average person they have to gut and sanitize everything else completely ruining any chance to build diverse communities.
Since you brought it up. I actually watched a video where I heard an artist with about 10k followers on ig saying she got many of her followers from doing art reels. So, it’s a smart direction 👍
Thank you for the perspective of treating social media like a sandbox, it's just a bit hard cause I've had instagram for so long and it's so hard to get noticed on there 😭😭 I definitely need to remind myself to film things for reels too lol
This is a great topic for current times. I agree that social media is the future of art and story telling where independents can have a chance to tell their stories or showcase their art. Love the vlogs !!!
Stuff like this is helpful for me. The industry is so turbulent right now and as a mom it's hard to feel secure jumping into that path again, but then feeling unsure of where I want my career to even go.
Thanks for the perspective on how to look at social media content creation in comparison to a regular job! 😊 Also your sketches have got me pumped to share more art again! ❤
Have you ever felt like "who am i to put out such content, there are other people more qualified than me to do this so im adding nothing?" idk maybe its general low self esteem
I definitely used to feel that way, but I guess for me, seeing other artists who have not had any other professional background outside of social media, but still proceeded to post art anyway, encouraged me. I also just remind myself that life is too short, and you just gotta do what you Gotta do to be happy and live your life!
Having reels be successful when you're starting off with a small community is unbelievably hard. I've done several reels per week for a month and a half and most of them didn't even get 500 views. Trying my best but it's kinda depressing spending so much time on a montage and having no pay-off in the end!
You make sketching look so easy 😮. Yes, Social Media platforms have indeed turned in to marketing channels, irrespective of the domain. Art fits right in, in terms of capturing attention and branding. I agree that content creation would be essential going forward and investing in garnering relevant tech, creative skills, would pay dividends in the long run.
How do you deal with how some may simply scroll and forget the art piece that made and put on social media, and how are you able to consistently put out 'content' for it? I know it sounds depressing but, how do you deal with those kinds of negatives?
Yeah i totally get it! I guess for me, it feels the same when I work in the animation industry, and people only look at my work for really only a few seconds on the screen. The difference is that at least on social media I have a more direct connection to the audience, while, in animation, I am merely just a name in the credits section. I also try to view social media, more as the place where I market some other longer forms of content, like a graphic novel, where I can have more direct access communicating to my audience about it vs. random ads from the publisher!
'....it feels the same when I work in the animation industry, and people only look at my work for really only a few seconds on the screen' I've never thought of how storyboarding and social media and may have things in common before! 'I also try to view social media, more as the place where I market some other longer forms of content, like a graphic novel' I could also see social media as a free way to promote yourself, it simply being a different form of advertising. I have a lot to think about now. Thanks. @@mewTripled
Nice video Michelle, timely and relevant as always. Would be interesting what are your thoughts about chasing the algorithm and trends as an individual artist or solo-entrepreneur? I think that's where most people get burnt out. Might be something you can address in another video, thank you.
Do people still watch traditional hand drawn animation like old Disney features and Studio Ghibli? Would students today care to learn traditional hand drawn animation?

Indeed.
And fully depending on an algorithm that can suddenly change and is completely out of your control is also pretty risky.
Also Instagram/Facebook has the right to use your photos for ai purposes
Totally agree with you.

Makes sense. I recently started experimenting with art reels and I’ve noticed people are liking them.
Thats great to hear!

I love that each sheet has a narrative within the big idea of travel

Yepyep it really is! Thank you so much for all your content, so inspiring & a huge encouragement! 😭😆🙌✨
It’s kind of awful to be honest.
Social media is such a cluster fuck that being any sort of disabled and impaired makes it hard for to many people.
I learn that Instagram have a lot of... So Many ART SUPPORT Reels 😢
Do people still watch traditional hand drawn animation like old Disney features and Studio Ghibli?
Would students today care to learn traditional hand drawn animation?
uncomfortable? no, just annoying and peeved XD
Yeah seems so 🤔
