    Being a kid of the 60's and 70's here in Michigan I remember these old sleds I am really enjoying you getting into them. There were some 70"s models that were way ahead of there time in styling hopefully you can run across some of them for example John Deere liquifire , Snow Jet & Skiroule just to name a few there were many more.

    Dido the bar on the back is to lift the track up. You should raise the track off the ground when you are first starting these sleds so if the engine revs it won’t take off on you. Trust me it happens. My neighbor across the street from me started his and it took off and didn’t stop until it hit my house then the car that was in my driveway. I love it when you save these old bikes and sleds.

      Back in '79, I started a 72 Sno Jet. It took off, glanced off the barn, just missed a parked tractor, ran through a barbed wire fence, ran about 300 yards across a field and got hung up on a rock pile.

    Got a other Raptor 660r in my shop. Guy said put new top end on it 686, won't start, low compression (25)psi. Told him make sure valves were set to correct clearance would be fine. I ended up going through it, valves ha 0 clearance at TDC, adjusted them, boom (153)psi, put fuel to it fired right up. Love the new sled bud. Those were just a blast to ride even with those old smokey motors... enjoy.

    Can cnc or 3d print new wheels just need dimensions. The wheel teeth snapped off they were on ground when you had it flipped over 58:00.

    We were supposed to get some snow here in Maryland after tomorrow, midnight, but it now looks like we'll only get rain. Was hoping for snow. Our weather service has forecasts that change drastically every few hours. When they say snow, we could end up with bathing suit weather. Our weather has been real weird the last couple decades. Been looking for a 2 stroke snow mobile engine near me for a few years and every single one has been listed for more money than you've paid for entire snow mobiles. Not too much use for them in my part of Maryland except for use in go karts and that's what I want one for.

    The guy is a Scorpion collector + They are under rated old sled's. This sled u got Joe is a pre-curser to Amf Harley Davidson. If u can't find parts Im sure there are many Antique snowmobiler's clubs in Wisconson or Minnisoda area that would probably help u out. It is neat to see this sled Don't wreck the seat cover its fairly unique design original

    Running these things on dirt and gravel is tough on them. The drive wheels turned to dust trying to overcome the friction, I give it to you that they were probably in bad shape to begin with. Other sleds with slides or hyfax will melt pretty quick without snow to help with lubrication.

    I had that very sled in the 70s. It was my first sled. I was 14 or 15. Had to pull your brains out to get it started, no electric start. That bar in the rear is a kickstand for storage. Got my finger slammed in the hinge. Split a finger in two long ways but I had finally got it running so I duct taped it together and went for a ride around the yard. Then I went in the house covered in blood and told Ma and all hell broke loose.Yours is cleaner than mine was and started better then mine. What a find!

    I owned a couple early 70’s models Ski-Daddlers. They were tanks but fun to goof around on.

    Put a weighted fuel filter on the end of the hose like a chain saw has. So the filter goes to the bottom of the tank

      Yep. I grew up with 1 lung Massey Ferguson sleds. 292 cc if I remember correctly. The tank was in the rear, but had the same type of weighted filter.

    Very excited to see snowmobile content! Been watch all your videos for a while now but I’m I diehard snowmobile fan so love that you’re working on them too. As a trick/tip for working on snowmobiles for priming carbs and fuel pumps, every carb sled I’ve worked on I blow into the tank with compressed air. Hold a rag and the air nozzle in tight to the filler neck of the tank so the air has no place to go but out the fuel line (you will have to block any tank vents) this forces the gas through the lines and into the pump/carbs, this is very helpful as fuel pumps on snowmobiles do not really pump without a prime and it is helpful to fill the fuel bowls (for sleds with mikuni style carbs) so you don’t have to pull the sled over a million times to get it to start. Don’t use a ton of pressure with the air but you should be able to watch the gas in the lines be forced into the pump/carbs, saves tons of time and lots of pulls.

    Be aware on older sleds the star shaped drive roller/sprocket can turn to dust as they are a plastic compound, so it's always worth checking, they are a pig to change and can be expensive.
    I wrote this at the start of thr video, and thats exactly what happened.

    At least you can snuggle up to the motor to stay warm when out ripping. Cool looking art deco style. Get a wire bottle brush with a flex shaft for cleaning out hard to clean tanks.

    Have you thought about getting an endoscope? Would be interesting to be able to see the inside of the gas tank or cylinder. Amazon sells cheap ones that use your phone and can record video. Food for thought.

    Old sleds are fun. Love my 68 evinrudes. Run like old outboards. The handle in the back is a kick stand to keep track in good shape. When you are done riding drop it diwn and spin track to clear ice off. Ps put inline filter from tank to carb that line that fell into tank had a brass screen on it to protect carb. Keeps jets from clogging. Cable on recoil were always kinking. Paining to fix. Eveys had rope. You get be off then spin up sping lock in place with metal framing vise grips or clamp insert rope and knot it then slowly release clamps and let wind in till it stop pull out a little cok rd for tention then install grip. Never did a cable scorpion had jlo with that. They were built bt trail a sled in my home town crosby ironton minn. The owner invented the continues track and pattoned . Same track used on all new sleds today. Hope this helps. Oh yeh 150 sled named after diffrent co.s bit t some made the whole sled like omc or evenrude or massey ferguson to name afew. Probably why mine atlre still running. Iol never was impressed with jlo but it runs have fun😊😊😊😊😊😊

    some more information about old sleds. There should be a small filter with a check valve inside the fuel tank that will keep the fuel from running back to the tank. and the bar on the back of the sled I believe is a stand to put under the sled to hold the track off the ground, so it doesn't freeze down.

    Joe you should for safety sake always take the drive belt off so the sled doesn't take off. It's usually a quick and easy thing to do. Then you can Rev it out as much as you want and need.

      Actually revving it without a belt can damage your torque converter but he still should definitely take the belt off before starting a sled that hasn't ran in years thats what I aways do so it doesn't take off if something wrong

      He should be careful around old belts too. When I was a kid my dad had an old Johnson sled, the belt broke when we we’re trying to get it going and he almost lost an eye.

      Good thought on safety, but you should actually never run a CVT without a belt. Not only could the primary clutch get damaged, but it could even explode. Best thing to do is have the track elevated or at least have parking brake on if it has one. Revving with no belt on is a recipe for disaster

    Joe.. for the pull cord mechanism if you cut the rope itll release the tension on the spring. Then you should be able to lift it up carefully just make sure the spring stays in the cover and not on the roller. To re tension it should have a small groove cut on the side where you can pull the rope through it and spring it 3 or 4 times and itll tension itself

    One thing to remember with these old sleds is some of the recoils dont have stoppers. So short quick pulls is key, and someone on Facebook should repop them drivers.

    I had a 69 Ski Daddler. As has been said the rear handle will flip down to be used as a stand to hold the track off the ground. There was also a factory kit to put wheels on the front for summer time use which was really cool.

    Have you ever tried to make knobs for those old track roller wheels that are removable by uniting them down with threaded inserts& all thread rod stock. On both ends of the wheels.& Make your own teeth for moving it into your shop to work on it mainly purposes.

    That red stuff is old school 2 stroke racing oil. Has a certain amount of castor oil for extra lubrication and to keep it cool

    Not to be a douch bag , BUT , if you're going to be working on sleds i'd suggest building or buying yourself a rear stand to lift the track off the ground .. a stuck throttle or miss adjusted carb & you could end up with a snowmobile in an area of your house , where you didn't intend it to be .... Besides that , really enjoying the snowmobile content ... keep up the good work ...

    I don't know much about those wheels for the tracks but just an idea if they are plastic you could mold your own for cheap and if they are metal you could just add onto the knobs with a welder and shape it with a grinder. Beats buying them if you can even find a pair for that old sled. Just snowballin

    You should have a box full of fuel filters and shut offs for these things one thing iv learned is to always run at least one fuel filter especially with that style carb you dont wanna need to tear into that if you can help it

    Excellent video Joe :) nice bring old Snowmobile back life gas remember used back then was 87 or 91 octane plus oil was called Mineral oil green black color in 1970's for single cylinder one my late Dad used in 1969 Bombardier 292 Rotax 1 cylinder motor had 6 gallon fuel tank in front and had long track plus seat fit 3 people on plus in back had tool box underneath seat from back brake light ! My dad brother my uncle had 1973 Bombardier F/A ( Free Air) 2 carbs with 2 cylinder he used 91 octane gas with Chain Saw Oil mix in Castrol brand one year by accident he put 91 octane gas in with Boat mix Castrol oil for outboard motors 2 cycle type it ran really good amazing me to and lots Powerfull machine it was! I used on home farm and rent ones my uncle he got motor rebuilt in 1994 to 440 Cubic Inches size and was going try get my dad running but he told want selling it instead fix up need motor repair on ! Also so far now you need long hose in fuel tank to pick fuel and if want keep running put in A grey bottle of STP Total Treatment fuel injection and carb cleaner in fuel tank and gasoline antifreeze bottle too help out each time fuel tank fill ! Both my dad and uncle sleds never had battery or starter motor too!

    I am 53 and I remember my Mom had one of these and my Dad had a John Deere cyclone 440. Back in like 1974. We rode with our parents double all the time in a small town called Mondovi in Wisc. My uncles had scorpions, mercury, Rupp. My first snowmobile was a scorpion stingeroo. Had a ol Sachs one lunger in it. I remember having the carburator right at stomach heigth and smelling of gas. WOW the good ol days. Miss them!

    YES!! A Ski Daddler..... they only snowmobile that gets stuck in snow.
    And when it's not stuck, it runs over small trees. Because I was too small to pick up the front end.

    There's usually a filter on the end of the gas line in the tank, they were usually heavy to hold the gas line to the bottom of the tank

    You should either lift or tie off the back of the machine… if that throttle takes off on you, so does the machine… ask me how I know! Lol

    I picked up a 73 Bultaco M103 250 MX several years back and it was solid seized but I’ve done so many in my life time and restored the bike back to it beautiful original condition and sadly I needed the money and sold it. Anyway I really enjoy watching your videos.

    Our 1st snowmobile was a 1966 Polaris Colt, bogey wheel drive train will wear out fast when not on snow same thing happened with my 70 panther then I fixed it then the cleats started breaking and I ended up tearing apart the track and it got all bound up around the drive and created a mess, thats what took my Panther down, rounded out the 70s with a Lynx, Jag then a 78 4000 El Tigre, all fun sleds back then

    FYI these JLO motors I believe are Czech. Here in the UK back in the day, they were used on portable arc welding machines. If you ever have to replace the plug lead good luck.

    For piece of mind pull the cooling cover for rat nests and clean and adjust the points and timing.

    you forgot to add a filter in the fuel line betweem the gas tank and the carb. it would keep alot of that junk out of the carb. , also you could add some seafoam fuel additive to the fuel to clean up the carb inside.good job fixing the starter 👍 . now you just need to add a kill safety switch and fix the lights with a on / off switch , i would put LED lights on it . its a good fixer upper

    Wonderfully utilitarian look. A work sled, rather than a leisure rider. Like it. 👍 You have no option but to tear into that pull-start, I'm afraid... You can't rely on a battery in the frozen wastelands... 🥶 Could you move the rear sprockets to the front?..

    Think I might have been in 5th or 6th Grade way back then. And boy did I want one of those Ski-Daddler Engines! I wanted to rip it out and stick it on a Go-Kart frame.
    I remember an unusual Snowmobile named "the Raider". I would never buy one, but wanted to drive one at least once. It have two tracks, much like the tracks seen on a Military Half Track, and instead of wheels in the front, there were Skis.
    Probably a Deadly High CG, so can't say I would ever buy one, but they were sort of Cool looking.
    If you ever find one of those, that might be a rare find.
    I'm thinking of another machine, maybe came out around 1973, called "Brute" They were Orange, and were the first Water Cooled engines I had seen.

    My Dad bought a 19 HP orange line Ski Daddler new in 68, cousins had the gray line.
    I always preferred the orange as more sporty. Learned how to flip boogies back on the machine.
    Have a 69 Polaris (sp?) 250 awaiting major work on my 'to do' list.

    Dad sold these first before becoming A Cat dealer. We liked the Wide track SkiDaddlers at first. Then once the second generation Panthers came out what the old Grayliners were good at was Selling Arctic Cats. A customer would ride the Daddlers and usually the response was Mehhhh OK. Boy that’s a workout! Then they got on a Panther that didn’t try to flip you off or massage your bum with the magic fingers of a hundred bogie wheels and had a flip top hood that allowed easy access and would run off and hide from the Grayliners etc for a little more cash. Usually the black sled went home with the customer. I liked them both but that’s how it went back in the day.

    Man ive been thru alot of them old sleds buddy but ive never heard of seen one of them, Sacs/JLo engines ya but not that sled, omg you can tell Joe hasn't had many old mid engine sleds lol asking where the exhaust comes out, its in fairly good shape for its age, they have steel hulls that rusted out alot but that looks solid

    You need to fab a rear stand to get track off the ground. Bogie drive wheels. I’ve rebuilt cogs back up with epoxy and shards of fiberglass. I drill a 3/8” hole dead center of each cog tooth and epoxy a short bolt. Let it cure for 24 hours. Then mix up more epoxy with shredded fiberglass mixed in. Form it around the bolt shaping like a cog tooth. The length should be just below track outside edge. Grind to shape with a dust mask. They lasted a couple years so far.

    Those cogs are made of nylon type material and with age become very brittle. Your lucky you got to see it move a few meters!

    Those front cog wheels dry out over the years and get very brittle. Once they get like that they just disintegrate with any kind of force. You need to know what pitch track that is so you can get the matching drivers

    I use to Drag Race AMF Ski Daddler when they switched to an orange and black sleds. Some with two cylinder and some with three. They were fast and they would lift the skis on take off so it was body english time to keep the straight. This was about 1970 - 1971. I used to work on the one like you found.

    That is a common issue. On these old sleds the rubber drives rote out. Walk you path back and you will most likely find them on the lawn.

    When I start my sleds up for the first time I tend to put the back up on a jack stand.bc if it full throttles it's outta there!

    Fuel tank in the front along with the headlight and a battery to make sure the tank explodes when you hit a tree let alone the non-classical steering column, they really knew how to build them back then.

    Put a chainsaw "like" fuel filter on the end of the fuel line you installed in the tank. They're weighted and stay on the bottom of the tank!

    The "Red and Black" 1968 Scorpion (1 cyl) was the first sled I ever had a ride on.. Going as fast as it would carry two passengers accross a field, was fast enough for a 14 year old kid.

    The pole bar and back is for you to lift up the snowbill and set that underneath the track so the track doesn't freeze to the ground

    Think good lesson on making sure you always tilt it and check the track and suspension out before purchasing, alot of those roller wheels, bearings seize up. And causes the gears to strip. Also. You want to do a plug chop on it. With mo air box , filter, it could be running lean, even with the pre mix. And not sure what pre mix you used. As some of those engines required a particular kind of oil. Due to the way it lubricates. And I believe the idle should just about move the clutch, in video looked, to loose till 1/2 throttle. a heavy rider, use to have to give it a little help to take off, very tiny, and ruff on the butt and back. When you showed the 1 video, it looked like the teeth were still there, you may have did it, but not lifting the track and not checking if the wheels spin freely. The friction may have destroyed them in a few feet. Or was already about to go.

    Joe struggling with that pull starter cable trying to unwind the frayed section, that's me today wrestling with any canned food product in a jar with a vacuum screwtop lid. My worries are not so dangerous as a cable spiriling out, flying towards your face unless beet juice from a jar of pickled beets splashing on your 'everything' dark red juice seems a catostrophic tragedy, ...such a mess.

    I owned one in orange. Complete with the rear "kick stand". Single cylinder and was a bear to pull over by a 10 year old boy

    Drill out holes in those old roller wheels then epoxy in those threaded inserts & repeat the process on the teeth.,or tooth parts of the wheels that grab.& Turn turn the tracks with. Belt sander.& Sawzall will fix that problem right up.,or even A jigsaw will do that part to it's just for cutting out the shaped angles.&angled cuts.
