Why is the third rail here? This is not an electric rail because there is a pantograph. And not a mountain rack rail. For a safety semi-rail for turns too far away. So what is it for?

For a trasitional period, Stadtbahn Trains, Type DT8 (Light Rial Trains) were to operate on the same routes as conventional tram vehicles Type GT4, which required 3-rail tracks as well as platforms with high and low floor section (e.g. Schlossplatz). These basic planning parameters were finally approved by the city council on June 10. 1976. Some 30 years later, in Dec. 2007 this form of mixed traffic (old Tram Vehicles / modern Light Rail Trains) came to an end, when the last Tram rout - line 15 - was converted to Light Rail operation (U15). The 3rd track (1 Meter gauge) will still be used for monthly museums turn with convetional Trams (GT4). The very first tunnels were built in the early 60ies (Charlottenplatz). But the first Stadbahn (Ligh Rail) Service, started in 1985 only. So for about 20 years, Trams with 1 meter gauge drove through the tunnels. Like Pre-Metro in Brussels.
