- (27) The Cathay Organisation (國泰機構), having the same Singapore origins as its main competitor Shaw Brothers (邵氏兄弟), set its foothold in Hong Kong by establishing International Films Distributing Agency (國際影片發行公司) in early 1950s. In 1955, it took over Yung Hwa Studios (永華片場) and rationalised its operations as Motion Picture & General Investment Co., Ltd. (國際電影懋業有限公司, MP & GI/電懋 in short).
In the next decade, MP & GI produced quite a number of Mandarin and Cantonese films, with famous actresses like Lucilla You Min (尤敏), Betty Le Di (樂蒂) and Linda Lin Dai (林黛). When its founder Dato Loke Wan Tho died in a tragic plane crash in 1964, MP & GI was subsequently reorganised as Cathay Organisation (HK)(1965) Ltd (國泰機構(香港)(一九六五)有限公司).
After a few years of fierce competition with Shaw Brothers, Cathay closed its Hong Kong operations in 1971 and transferred its studio to Golden Harvest (whose founders were, ironically, former SB executives), continuing the "unfinished business" (GH vs SB) in the next 15 years. Cathay Organisation still runs a number of cineplexes as well as other diversified businesses, but ceased film production like Golden Harvest.
Cathay idents are famous for featuring its landmark compound, which comprises the Cathay Building at the back and a cinema (The Cathay) at the front. The former was redeveloped but the front facade of The Cathay has been preserved and gazetted as a national monument.

Dire, this is best upload ever. Excellent job! Cathay Scope is amazingly great in Mad Mad Mad Sword.
Thanks Erichi and Craig. I think Cathay's idents are quite consistent in presenting its iconic Cathay Building, yet with various backdrops like color-day and color-night. Pretty a step ahead of Warner Bros.
Chinese characters used to be read from right to left, but when it displays from left to right, something funny will happen. Like Cathay's chinese name 國泰. when showing in reverse means 泰國 (Thailand)!
2:28: That background looks VERY similar to the one used in the Toho logo at the time.
Thanks for agreeing with me, Craig^^. Ever since I liked Cathay, both you and Dire have made me cheer up by the themes. :D
Bet you found it there too! But in the same ident at From The Highway (1970) doesn't seem to feature that audio track.
Erichi, a recent finding: The Spirits (1969) and The Devil's Skin (1970) shows two more different track for the Cathay Scope's post-1965 ident.
I was thinking whether viewers will be bored to death if I show the same idents with different versions of soundtracks XD
Hello Sir, Can I ask a question........ The logo at the end....... Which film was that... Looks like a Malay Film.....
I hope you can answering me.......
This logo like "Yeah, we have tall buildings and we proud of it"

You're welcome, Dire^^' I guess you can say idents have catchy themes ever and makes us have spirits within us. And yes, from your reply, I just found out in Craig's Leftovers video, and so, I love the theme of Cathay. I didn't knew it also came in From The Highway (1970). I want to say, thank you both you and Craig for agreeing with me^^. I wish you the best on part 2.
Thanks revin, I don't know much about foreign languages.
According to HKFA:
1.International is established in 1953
2.MP&GI is formed in 1956
3.Cathay continued to support Golden Harvest to film
4.Yung Hwa closed in 1956
The source is believed to be a video of a taiwanese film distributed by Cathay. I do not intend to find that logo but that film instead, and it suddenly pops out.
Where did you find the last logo?
The fourth language you're talking about, tk94732, is Tamil.
《泰国》
