    Nice and clear, Rachel! I've been using Master Pages for over 25 years in both Quark and In-Design and, as you know, both applications have a slightly different way of producing them. I got my 30 day trial today and thought "Oh, no! Here we go again!". Now - you've shown how to do it without the usual frustration of learning and finding out for oneself! Lazy rules!! Thanks!

    Rachel! Thank you for this! I actually saw your older video from last year where you showed how to do an easy planner in Affinity Publisher and so I went and bought it. It was 50% off, I was thrilled! Then I replayed that video and went right along with you for that tutorial again and created a planner. It looked alright for a first swing at it in a brand new platform, but when I finished and added my own artwork, etc., I found my margins were very slightly off and KDP said 'no bueno!'. I went back and redid the whole thing from the beginning because I didn't have a full understanding of Master Pages! It was fine because I learned even more that second go 'round. I am still for some reason having a very slight issue, but at least now, thanks to this tutorial, I know how to fix it. Fingers crossed. Thank you so, so much! You are a blessing! 😊👍

    Back in the late 90s and early 2000s I used Page Maker, Quark, and InDesign. I wanted to get back to a real publishing program, but I don't have any reason or the money for the big names. I was planning on buying Affinity Publisher, but put it off. Tonight I found it on their site on sale for half off. It also came with three different templates for free. Perfect timing for finding these videos.

    Question: We are about to begin composing a number of stand-alone chapters (or if you like, "books", which will probably also be combined into a larger volume in the future). For each stand-alone chapter, I am curious how you would suggest dealing with the cover page, which will have unique content/graphics, et al compared to the remaining pages in chapter(s). Your removing the first page from the master pages (starting at time stamp 9:01)seems to be one way of doing so. Are there any other useful ways or better ways of doing so, and under what considerations??? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Three very quick questions please 🙏(well, the required replies are short/quick lol!):
    1) If I want to apply a black background to all pages of my document via a master page, the only way to do this is to create a rectangle with a black fill and drag it to cover the entire master page's white canvas (and apply this master page to all the pages), correct?
    (*ie. There's no way to just set black as the default canvas color for this document, or for the master page which will be applied to all pages.)
    2) If I want to apply different elements to the document's pages (eg. page numbers / black background rectangle / shape), for EACH element I want to apply to the rest of the pages, I should create a SEPARATE master page for it, right?
    (*ie. I should not create ONE master page which contains ALL the different elements I want to apply throughout the document, and just apply this master to all the pages - because if the master has a black rectangle background, and a page number, in it, I would want the black rectangle to be the lowest layer on each page, while the page number on the top of the list..)
    3) How do I "tell" the app on what LAYER LEVEL to apply the master page in the pages that it's applied to (given that the master page, as opposed to the rest of the pages, only contains ONE layer: the element that will be applied throughout the document - eg. a page-number layer on its own)?
    (*eg. if all the pages have photos that take up the entire page - so each page has multiple layers of photos - if I want to apply a page number to all these pages, this applied layer needs to be ABOVE all the pages' layers so that the page numbers are visible. But, by default, AP applies this page-number layer on the master to the BOTTOM of the layers' list of each page, making the page number invisible as it's hidden behind the all photos' layers which cover each page! So to fix this, the only way I see possible, is to MANUALLY drag the page-number layer to the top of the layers' list for EACH of the 100+ pages... :
    🙄 Which of course beats the purpose of master page instant global application lol)
    THANK YOU!!

    Thanks for a really good tutorial. I think Affinity Publisher is awesome. I have 2 questions. Scenario- you have an 80 page document and most of those pages have multiple masters applied. If I wanted to delete only 2 out of 3 masters on only 35 of the 80 pages, how would you do that without deleting all 3 masters? Question 2, how would you apply that without having to do it 35 times? Thanks!

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're welcome! What you can do is duplicate the master page that you'd like to remove from those 35 pages, then right click on it, choose Apply Master to Pages, then specify the pages that you'd like the master to remain applied to. Once you've done that you can delete the original master. I just did a quick test and that seemed to work. You'll just have to be mindful of the "Remove Existing" check box to see if/how that affects the other masters that are applied to those pages.

  • @mikearst2940
    @mikearst2940 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks kindly for this video - very clear steps. I'm gradually sliding back toward the world of publishing after being out of it for a long time (in those old days, with QuarkXPress). First task: make a template for book publishing (a small photo portfolio) via the MagCloud book system, which would be a good "sandbox" because it's very affordable. The process overall is: publishing-software template to publishing-software document, save to PDF, then upload PDF to MagCloud. MagCloud doesn't yet have any templates in Affinity Publisher format, so I'd need to make one for myself. On the one hand it doesn't _sound_ horribly complicated, but I've been away from this for many years and am unsure how to go about learning as deep a program as Affinity Publisher. Suggestions on how to proceed would be much appreciated, and thanks in advance.

    • @RachelHarrisonSund
      @RachelHarrisonSund 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike, welcome back to the world of publishing! I have to admit, I've never heard of MagCloud. I've also never used QuarkXPress, so I can't say how similar Affinity Publisher is to Quark. It's almost exactly like InDesign though, so if you have any experience with that software, AP will be a piece of cake to wrap your head around. Publisher offers a free trial, so you could always download it and play around for the trial period and see how far you get with it. Let me know if you end up trying it out!

    • @mikearst2940
      @mikearst2940 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RachelHarrisonSund Thanks for your reply. I was leaving the business at the time QuarkXPress was starting to fade out in popularity. I never used InDesign. (There were no such things as layers in publishing programs at that time.) I'll definitely try the evaluation version of Publisher.
      MagCloud was, I think, acquired by Blurb. They don't have Blurb's comprehensive book-creation tool that you can download. Another difference seems to be that they are good for making very short and low-cost books (if you choose saddle-stitch binding, as few as 8 pages + cover; minimum 20 pages if you choose perfect binding). A photographer often seen on Facebook and TH-cam* has been trying out MagCloud for short tests - both color and b&w - and has been getting very good-quality results. B.t.w. I found a couple of the Affinity Revolution videos really good, so thanks for that recommendation.
      * If you search the th-cam.com/users/TedAVieira TH-cam channel for "book" you can find a few examples.

    • @mikearst2940
      @mikearst2940 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      One interesting challenge with MagCloud (or is this true of all self-published books?) is that they of course expect photographic files to be in an RGB color space, but if you're including text they want it in CMYK. Is it even possible in Affinity Publisher to have an RGB document with little "islands" of CMYK like that? In any case they insist: no spot-colors for the text. That whole bit is a little mysterious to me yet.

    Great video - but what if I want to apply a Master Page to a range of pages? Say 50-100. When I type "50-100" it only ends up putting the master page on the next page after that range: pg. 101. I don't know why this is happening. :( I also tried applying the Master Page to ALL pages and it only puts in on the last page. ??

    Probably a dumb/crazy question, but am new to everything. Is there a way to put multiple master sheets - 3 together to form a repeating pattern in a journal or do you have to go in and manually insert different master pages in each section? Probably not asking this correctly, but it is driving me crazy doing 3 pages of one master and then 1 page each of 3 other masters. Thanks

    Is there a possibility to set it automatically, that added Master Page is always detached? Maybe there is any shortscut?
    As far I remeber in indesign you just hold ctrl or shift and you can select objects.

    The art of bookmaking, layouting and print design has a long and fascinating history, deeply rooted in crafts that need comprehensive professional training and education.
    Why do you, as a professional designer, foster vanity publishers flooding print on demand platforms with booklets often lacking even the most basic standards of professional print design? What's the sense of diluting a professional driven market with amateurs' work??

    • @luxurycardstore
      @luxurycardstore 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll answer this one for you Rachel - Because the public has proven time and time again that they will buy what these "amateurs" are producing. If there were no validity or saleability to what these "amateurs" make, I'm pretty sure Amazon would have killed the POD programs by now. However not only did they not kill KDP they doubled down and put their money where their mouth is. Hopefully we won't see you hanging around KDP. Please make sure you don't pollute our "amateur" lake with any of your "faux highbrow" drivel.

      Hi Jom, I couldn't agree more with your comments regarding the art of bookmaking. But what's also true is that the industry of self-publishing is thriving, and it's here to stay. This means that publishing fiction, nonfiction, low-content, and the like is now fully accessible to nearly everyone on Earth, regardless of their level of skill or training. The entire point of self-publishing is to open up the field to "amateurs". And this industry would be booming regardless of my presence on TH-cam.
      What I aim to do with my channel is offer my acquired design and self-publishing knowledge to those who most likely would be self-publishing regardless of my existence on YT, but are interested in building and elevating their own skills in the name of creating higher quality books. Those that aren't concerned with flooding the market with thousands of poor-quality books generally aren't consuming my content.

    Why does no one who makes videos about master pages ever say how text is threaded on the "regular" pages, and what happens when you apply a new master page to a page that has a master page with different columns. It's fantastically aggravating. Unless "things just happen," and I'm not aware of it.

    • @starkcd
      @starkcd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure I would use a "Master page" the way she did. (Unless you are doing a project like this one that had repeating content on most/all pages.) I use Masters ONLY for things that I want repeated: page numbers, chapter names as headers, etc. Of course you can include your text frames in the master and then thread your text as you place it. I have not played with AP yet so I can't tell you how to thread text. Everything I am seeing says that it is very close to InDesign, so maybe try to do it like you prefer to do it in ID?
