Thanks so much for the shout out! This was a fun video and based on your presentation I think I'd dig hearing you talk about any video game, really. Subscribed!
0:16 Im about 99.9% sure thats just a real life picture of a random mountain they used as a skybox. You can even see a road going up the mountain and all the trees clearly cast a shadows.
I never noticed the tree on the kiln of the first flame, also funny thing there's a tree in firelink shrine that doesn't appear on the cutscene where the bird leaves you there
I didn't even think to check the cinematic!! But yeah it's crazy I didn't notice the Kiln either, was super happy to discover it while moving around with the free camera
My first souls game was ds2, before I played ds1 while still playing ds2 some guy made the following video, he jumps into the well and skips direct to the catacombs of the giants, when I got to play ds1 I decided to do it, bad idea
11:50 Somehow in all the years of lore, I never realized that the first flame was discovered in the core of an archtree. I never noticed the half-second before it starts zooming down the roots that the camera was going _into_ an archtree. OR that the Kiln was on top of the remnants of an archtree! Cool stuff
Very chill, I love videos like this. Just a chill walk through looking at stuff. You know, I have played Dark Souls more than most and I never noticed the Firelink tree was growing out of the cliff face!
You know the guy that finds the location of every picture you send him? We should send him the picture from the undead asylum trees so he tells us where this picture is from
There's always more to be discoverd or looked at in dark souls games-I knew the fake trees could be killed, but never would have thought that they might be moving around. Especially in dark souls 1 and 2, there are so many odd, experimental systems and ideas, like miracle resonance or the rat covenant, that are sadly rare in modern games.
A friend was blessed by the algorith and found your channel, he then proceeded to share the video with me. I must say that you gained 2 subscribers, loved the vid!
When Mr Miyazaki was sitting in his small development office, maybe he shared it, maybe since he was director he had his own office. Do you think when he sat down and showed his animators the concept of the witch of izalith fight where a tree sprouts giant flaming claws and scythe... Ya know... do you think he knew that in 10-20 years his games would be so over digested by the videogame community that he would have entire essays on the design of the trees in his game?
When I spend time on small details in my videos, it's always in the hopes that someone, somewhere will notice and it will make it just a bit better for them. So maybe in a way, this is the same here. Where they didn't plan on people over analyzing every detail, but they still put in that extra bit of effort on the off chance that someone would!
@@Xenoxygenelol when I commented I was halfway through, I was still expecting a joke about how the bed of chaos is a fucked up magic tree and doesn't count but I'm genuinely surprised you didn't even mention it in the video. Not that it would have been better or worse, but I was really really waiting for the bullshit magic tree 😂
@@MrHeorhe I was hesitating to be fair, even recorded several shots with multiple angles. But I felt that for it to be more than just padding, I would have to dive into the lore of it and it might have been too much for this silly video! Also fuck Bed of Chaos.
Very fun video :) I see the world that sits upon these trees as coming later. Like the tree didn't necessarily grow through the land, the land formed upon the trees over a very long time, and the trees were strong enough to keep these lands aloft. Fantasy universe sort of stuff but kind of different than the standard Also, did not know that there are roots at the bottom of the Kiln. Neat!
@@Xenoxygene I tend to think it's just a single world propped up by many trees, but I know that the lack of land above in other areas that would make Ash Lake dark don't seem to be there. Sunlight is sort of a theme, though, with false light and true light, so I don't think it has to obey physical reality, it's all a bit dreamlike. I do see why that hypothesis is there, and I entertained it briefly, but I feel like the many worlds thing they talk about in DS1 is partly there to justify multiplayer, and that also seems to be an overlapping potentiality rather than physically separate places. Hard to say for sure
@nutherefurlong I've never gone too deep into the lore but I guess I might get more information on that when studying the trees of Dark Souls 2 and 3! Especially with areas like Things Betwixt that seem to really expand on this transition between realms in a way. Thank you for your help, I'll be sure to share my findings in the next video!
Would love to see you do a video about trees for Dark Souls 2 and 3. The roots in the Old Chaos when you fight the Ivory King in DS2 look pretty cool :3
5:04 I actually have a very good example of this happening in my yard. We cut a large tree because it was about to fall anyways, and we kept the stump because it was too large and nobody wanted it. After a couple years, small branches of what it looks like to be a totally different tree started growing on it, and nowadays these branches are quite big although not very thick. It's honestly very impressive to look at.
You forgot to mention how the dlc's trees are smaller than their counterparts in the main game, which makes sense since the dlc happens hundreds of years earlier.
This video is great, thanks for giving more insights about such an overseen detail, which is instead crucial for the original vision of the game. Apparently Miyazaki said in an interview that he already had a fascination about the concept of trees and he had already used it in the past games
Somehow my ds1 knowledge keeps growing and i love it, also i think you covered every single tree on the whole game, including the small firelink shrine trees on the thumbnail.
Oh, you're cool bro! Awesome, half a minute in and I can already tell you've got something that's a cut above the rest. I'm in. Subscribed! To expand, there's a million Souls channels out here, and it takes something different to really stand out. You're unique approach is well crafted. I see what you're doing and ready for more. Thanks for your hard work
The firelink tree (and the graveyard one, and in blighttown etc), to me, has always connected as an extension of the archtrees holding up the world (compare and contrast to various creation myths involving trees, yggdrasil from norse mythology for example). It's not too hard to picture how such a great and mighty tree might have its branches or stem burrow through rock over the millennia until it extends to the other side. It's also not entirely out of reason to assume that perhaps the world formed around the archtrees, at which point the tree came first and the rock formed around the tree, like rebar in concrete.
Interesting video. Not the thing i expected but was relaxing to watch anyway. I think Elden Ring is the best for this format cause, since it's open world, there are a lot of trees in some places and close to none in others, which would tell more of a story.
on an unrelated note, if you want to get a better "dark souls lore voice", i recommend queueing up a bunch of those videos of pets being reunited with veterans after not seeing them for years on a second monitor by your script, and playing them all in reverse so it looks like the dogs are being abandoned. really helps to develop the "1-hp voice" that clinches a melodramatic reading of the fextralife wiki
WHAT ?!?!?! I have over 1000 hours in Dark Souls and i never knew that beach area or that tree area existed. My mind is blown. Thank you for showing me not only 1 but TWO secret areas. You earned a sub from me
strange that you didn't mentioned the fact that all trees in Dark Souls 1 are completely static images, no animation, when I played this game for the first time I found this pretty unsettling but also fits this game pretty well, newer games meanwhile don't do this but yeah, I actually liked this fact in this game in particular
Incredibly so! I never owned a WiiU and only played a few hours on an emulator. So I'll finally play through the game from beginning to end with this remake!

7:12 Can you or any of your datamining friends explain why the trees and the textures are misaligned, only to fix themselves when you reload the area?
we all were expecting a video on bayle, but we got something even greater.
"what the fuck are trees"

Dark Souls trees developers' faces when Xenoxygene finds the misaligned leaves in Darkroot. 😬

Great videos as always
I love trees and the hacky yet cohesive world construction of the first Dark Souls.
