I was amongst the first hang glider pilots to fly off the sand dunes near Torquay, Victoria Australia in the early 1970's in home made Rogallo wings constructed by Dieter Prussner. 52 years of flying hang glider and ultraights have now passed and by pure chance I now live in John Dickensons home town of Grafton, NSW Australia where Johns flying and design achievements are hounored with a monument.
I was one of the late starters and followers, skydiving in '66, hang gliding in '78 but I always looked up to the early pioneers, the guys with the real balls to do it all. Thank you for the names I never heard of; Steve Cohen and John Dickenson. Glad they have finally gotten the recognition they so well deserve!
I thank you Bill Moyes and JD, Ragollo and not forgetting the many pioneer pilots who helped to develop this fantastic sport at great if not ultimate cost to themselves.
I was just reminded of my old times, of a lot of time, folding paper airplanes as a kid....in early 60,s..Wonder if that is another reason to build my "own design" is what we called em.."they called em, the "homebuilts"...way back in 77, thanks for puttin this up...
I bought my 1st glider from wasp uk early 74... I went on to accompany the team to kossen same year..Brian Woods was European champion..the haynes brothers run wasp..I flew the prototype Nova curved centre boom..it was by seat of your pants stuff but great fun
Dr. Rogallo invented the wing itself but without a method for steering it, brilliant none the less. Mr. Dickensen added the control frame and turned the wing into a usable aircraft, also brilliant. Bill Moyes showed us what we could do with it and the rest is history. Each of these men added their DNA to the hang glider and give each other credit for their contributions. We wouldn't have what we have without all of these great men, so let's put aside the pissing match and give praise to all!
No mention of the term 'lock out' which was the problem when towing directly from the bar..but perhaps that revelation came much later. I was one of the early birds who towed directly from the harness in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Back in 1958,I was 10 years, I saw an artist impression of a rocket stage being brought back to earth by a flexible triangular wing sticking out of the tube. I remember it was in a Popular Mechanics magazine, a very small white on black sketch, which inspired me to make a model from thin cardboard and wires to attach a weight. I had no experience and knowledge of aerodynamics other than folding paper planes but I launched the model from the roof of our house and discovered the mode flew quite well. I also discovered, once in a stall there was no dive recovery. So I shaped the centre-section in a s-shaped reflex form. This did the trick and I decided then, that when I would be older, I would hang underneath the glider and didbso later in the 70's when the first reflexed hanggliders were marketed. I also knew then, that mr. Reinhold Platz flew back in the 20's a foldable and carriable sailplane from the sand dunes in Holland. So I consider myself being one of the inventors too!

Hello!! Take a look at some hang gliders flown a decade or so before all of these mentioned at channel "sevtecsev". they are the same as those shown but we did not tie ourselves to the glider; we used parallel bars, instead. also, the nose angle was greater to improve glide angle.
Why do you keep lying Barry? It's pathetic, your hang glider was pathetic compared to what was being flown in the 1920s and 30s. Take it out to the Owens Valley and thermal it to 20,00 feet before you spout off your big mouth again.,
Bill Bennett's commercials back in the early to mid 70s is why I got into Hang Gliding. I took lessons once I turned 18, in Oct of 1978 from Southern California School of Hang Gliding (now Wind Sports). Thank you, Rich Grigsby and Joe Greglo.
Also STEVE COHEN who founded the very first Hill-soaring Hang Glider company in 1970 and pioneered launching from mountains and soaring in ridge lift. false information Dickenson is NOT the Bonafied "inventor" of hang gliding nor is he responsible for being the god-head lord high emperor of hang gliding - he was one of many whom advanced the sport in the mid 20th century - to place Dickenson on the high alter as some immortal creator of the hang gliding sport is completely wrong - END OF LESSON - no further discussion
This interview was sprung on John Dickenson by this pair of liars who pretended to be his friends while all the time hiding his role and stealing the credit. At the time of this recording John's understanding of the sport came mostly via Moyes and Rogallo, John had no idea of the true story and his comments here reflect that lack of knowledge. When I first started researching the history John Dickenson agreed to speak with me on the condition that I never said anything bad about his friends Bill Moyes and Francis Rogallo, As more evidence appeared John withdrew that protection. We now know that all of Moyes' first flight stories on here is just an example of how shamelessly he can lie. We also now know that Rogallo was a complete imposter who did nothing that contributed in any way to the modern hang glider, except lie about it. Read the Sept 2023 edition of Skywings, even Rogallo worshipper Joe Schofield now admits that Rogallo played no role. There are dishonest people who try to use Dickenson's innocence about the true story, as expressed here to prove Rogallo's involvement, that is pathetic.
RIP John, thanks for your contribution. Brave pioneers.

What about Bill Bennett...? He cam from Australia and introduced hang gliding to America.
Thanks for posting.
So much about it in so little time.

Rogallo wasn't a Dr and the thing he invented had nothing to do with hang gliders, read his patents FFS before saying any other stupid lies.
