What a nice gift from Mike. I'd never heard of them until you mentioned them. I seem to recall that the Kays catalogue had a Akai 4000DS in the 70s, I had seen them (reel to reels ) on American cop shows at that time such as Starsky & Hutch, Columbo and Vega$. Then went to a school friends house and his dad had a Revox.
Hi David, I still look in the background of all old TV shows especially the American ones to see if there is any old HiFi. Then play the game of naming the make and model.
@@MichaelYates Not to mention those old New Romantic bands would always have a reel to reel playing in the background on Top Of The Pops and Old Grey Whistle Test. Japan, Depeche Mode etc
Great Informative Video Michael I Replaced One Of My LD3141 ics With a Ready Made Up Board And it Worked a Treat Bit Fiddly To Do But It Fixed It Hope The Heads I Sent You Are Better Than Your Old Head Block And a Very Nice Plug For a Lovely Long Forgotten Band From The Seventies Super Stuff Michael !! Got a 4000DB. Both channels stopped working on record for me, first the left one went, then the right one. I'm kind of hoping it's a capacitor thing, but this video is still helpful, and i'm probably gonna need to do this at some point.
Thanks for the video, but i have one question for the part beginning @ 13:39 ... Do you necessarily need to record the 1kHz tone onto a tape for use as a "test tape" or can i make these inner adjustments while monitoring from a tone generator source?
Yes you can use a test tone generator as a source, adjust both recording level controls to the same on front of unit while on Monitor input as source( 13:58), then switch over to Monitor as tape (13:58) and then adjust pot to level up meter
would you share where you got the HQ schematic from, please? All I can find is the crapy scanned service manual which isn't easy to read. Your schematic seems much more complete and clearer. In the process of refurbishing a 4000ds at the moment.
hi it's the DB model you have the black around the meters 4000DB MK2 is it i do have 14 akai 4000 decks carboot there was a shop in nottinghill gate that used to sell alot of reel to reel that not there any more . i have more than tha show of the one with the music in he background stopped buying room is the thing bob
I just get this model all seems to work but record button is blocked.. impossible to push it into the body, it might be a cable blocking the mechanism. I will try to dig a bit further to see inside what is happening. Thank you for this video it helps understanding !
Great information mik .ihave problem inmy recorder akai M9 the ones of vu meter when ipowed the united the signal is going to the last ride line in vu meter that's befor palying the tape what's your Idea of this problem and how can i repair it. Thanks
I would give the record / playback long switch inside a clean first, its normally a long silver bar looking switch as when dirty this causes no end of problems with VU meters. also have you tried to adjust the varaible resistor that controls the level of the VU meter., other than that the maybe a faulty transistor but if that was the case you probebly have a high output on that channel through the phono or din output
HI mike how is you ascot is coming up on the 18th my mate used to work in a hire shop he got me morning suit at a very silly low price under the £40 it's show some wear like the fast food ad it's not just for one day and i am used to wear a heavy suit boiler suits easy to get hot in them try out some cam's for my bro they have to be a tanks he heavy handed with them alot of the time it's a sony 2009 it came out it can do live video output i have been testing alot of models of cams bob
Hi Bob, I have been to Royal Ascot twice quite a few years ago now, bumped into Bruce Forsyth and Willy Carson in the hotel lift, thats my claim to fame at Ascot. Great day out though and highly recommended, though not a cheap day out if you dont back a winner.
hi the akai 1800ss used the same unit i am buying alot of gear in at low prices it's a slow thing i am working on a akai mg14d the deck works bad power unit there's alot not been on here i had bad time with cam's not lasting long and playing up audio recording is ok so it's alot easyer just gear and my voice bob
Now even if I'm looking at DATASHEETS, I'm having doubts finding the right pinout for the BC 549 (it should be solder the other way around). If you have any tip on it thank you. Great video
Michael, I have a troubling problem that I encountered while replacing a diode on my Akai 1800D-SS1800. While moving the board to gain access to the diode, I noticed a wire connection that must have been pulled from its normal connection point. I have searched and searched and cannot locate that connection point. I can include pictures of the wire. HELP!!!!
Hi, I am not familar with the 1800, manual can be found here I think in pdf format archive.org/details/manual_1800DSS_OM_AKAI_EN if you can trace where the wire is still connected now on the circuit diagram, you might be how to trace where the other end goes with the circuit diagram , you will know the range of where it can go by the lenght of it, look for any dry joint ie non shiney points or rough soldier on the board where it might have got broken off from
hi the 1800ss use this part in this deck they go bad over time pcb go bad over time i have fond just lights to deal it's the white ones i am getting not the yellow light use alot of white L E D 10MM ones or a white bike light bob
My understanding is that Hitachi was silver plating the leads on devices at that time (I am assuming to make them more conductive / to give better solder adherence.?). That was 40+ years ago. At the time, I imagine it was a good thing. Probably added some 'curb appeal' to their devices over similar from other companies. However, to be fair, I'm pretty sure Hitachi, nor Akai, nor any of the other brands / models that used Hitachi devices were thinking that we would be trying to utilize their gear 3, 4 or 5 (or more) decades later. These device have been good for 2-3 decades, but we're WAY past their intended design life, so not really a 'fault' of Hitachi. We see many 'black leg' devices now here at Oaktreevintage and while most seem to be from Hitachi, we see them from other brands as well. The "C458" was only one of many transistors that generally now will have 'black legs' (tarnish). I wouldn't pillory Hitachi because after 40 years, the silver on their semiconductors has tarnished. Just my humble opinion...of course, you know what they say about those.
Many thanks for the demo thanks also being so cool,Ive a Akai GX221d,and theres no more Head reposition,IC no problem. Thanks!
Great detailed video Michael, I really enjoyed it..

Hey Mike, maybe you could send some free music to Andy @ VER.. Then you lot wouldn't have to listen to The Phillishave Twist again !! lol
Thanks Mike, will be given one of those little boards ago myself soon

hi beware of dry solder around the heads as the 1-4 2-3 button get moved alot using you have to resolder all parts that get banged about
Thanks Bob

Hitachi should be sanctioned for making the 2sc458. Absolute trash every time
