Chester Thomas is also an amazing drummer. This solo is simply relative to what both these guys are capable of doing. It's a show and they must conserve their energy. Ever time I listen to Genesis, Phil's drumming is sublime. He is gifted beyond words in every aspect of being a musician. Also, I saw him play with Robert Plant and he just blew me away.
+Todd Lavigne Amen Todd, Phil Collins re-wrote the book on drumming. Besides being a lead singer behind the skins for years before getting a backup, his whole set-up and tuning was a first and never repeated. I have seen him live several times (including with Clapton) and never ceased to amaze me.
+Todd Lavigne John Bonham's feel and groove are second to none. There are guys that play with more technical precision, but feel is instinctive. Feel can't be taught, and it can't be learned. Only feel can take a crap song, like Misty Mountain Hop, and make it groove hard.
Phil and Chester's drum duets - always a highlight at Genesis and Phil Collins concerts! Gives me goosebumps! Thank you for the memories - love you guys!!!!!!
I remember hearing this as a beginner musician at age 9 or 10. I listened to it over and over and especially the cool fill parts by Phil. Genesis was the first band I took seriously as musicians and as a musician. I love em. Always will. ThankYOU Genesis.❤️🙏🙂
Oh it still gives me goosebumps. Makes my lungs to a Tom than my heart like the bass drum. I always share this to people who say Phil Collins is some middle of the road love song singer. The man is a genius in my eyes
My parents took me to see genesis when i was 10 years old, it was my first ever concert and i was up until gone 1am on a school night ! Had the following day off school as i was so tired ....... 👍👍👍 thanks mum and dad, i will never forget that night 👍👍👍
CHOPS. These guys got 'em. Such attention to detail. Phil Collins approaches all his music and performances with the same insane precision and flawless attention to detail. Mr. Thompson and he played together for 40 yrs. and we can see why. Perfection!
Chester Thompson has always been amazing. And he was able to play with Phil Collins , something I envy, and be great. Phil is an awesome drummer. And this drum battle shows the talent of both men.
Chester said in an interview that he liked the musical style of drumming you hear in jazz. I've always considered Phil Collins as one of the most musical people in Genesis (with his drums). They are very similar. Still, it is just amazing the uncanny unison they play. It is like a Vulcan mind-meld.
I saw the double drum solo during the ABACAB tour. It was really amazing! I find that Phil Collins is one of the best rock drummers. His percussion is instantly recognized as that 80/90s rock/pop drum sound. It is a real shame about his current health but this is the way of life, nothing lasts forever. I was once a 13 year old kid watching Genesis playing ABACAB tour!
There's plenty of great drummers, some arguably better than Phil (but not many). But how many drummers have an actual distinctive sound? I'd say even many non Phil Collins fans could recognise his drumming.
Take away the strife, take away the long arduous task of recording, take away the stress of thinking if the masses will accept and embrace your art. What do you have? You have the touring drummer, the best job in rock n roll. Chester Thompson is one of the best.
I was born '93 and my dad had many recorded Genesis concerts on tapes. This duet had such an impact on me when I was a toddler and dad, working on construction sites, did a makeshift drum set from large plumbing pipes with hard plastic lids. I, course, made a lot of noises but still were able to keep a good rhythm for my young age, according to my parents.
Often the rest of the band rely on the drummer to keep time. Ringo Starr was v good at keeping time for The Beatles. You often see the other band members turned to the drummer listening to him and watching him for timing.
+Nige Hodgetts (Nige GSX1400UK) Ringo was also a very creative drummer, he did cool stuff, but always supported the music and never overpowered the music. Very underrated drummer.
They took the two drummer thing to high levels of playing, drum sound, and tuning. The really cool thing was the two of them playing during the instrumental sections of the older Genesis songs. They didnt just wing it, and get loose and sloppy, like other guys who have tried it. They were so well rehearsed, and precise; and knew exactly what they were doing at any point in the song. Ultimate professionals.
25 years on and this still is a master craft on drumming, if they stayed at the same tempo throughout it would be cleaver the fact that they don't makes it incredible.
I remember seeing Genesis back in Buffalo,NY right after Peter Gabriel left and Chester was playing drums while Phil led the singing and after a couple of songs as Phil was introducing the band and finally got to Chester and Phil said "Hey give the bloke in the back a hand and keep one thing in mind that the drummer is the goalkeeper of the band"..i`ll never forget that folks..G`Day Y`All!
I confess I had to watch this twice, I could not believe how fantastic it was, never heard anything so beautifully executed in my 75 years, wish I could get a recording on CD

Truest statement I've ever read of Phil..
+Tina Reggie glad you. It gets tiring reading the John Bonham was the best. He was more famous but Phil Colin blows him away
Only one correction to your comment: Chester Thompson is Phil's excellent partner in crime. As for the rest of what you said: Amen!
Phil is lost in a trance. In another world. His groove is amazing!
Phil and Chester's drum duets - always a highlight at Genesis and Phil Collins concerts! Gives me goosebumps! Thank you for the memories - love you guys!!!!!!
Phil & Chester were definitely "Drum Soul Mates".
I remember hearing this as a beginner musician at age 9 or 10. I listened to it over and over and especially the cool fill parts by Phil. Genesis was the first band I took seriously as musicians and as a musician. I love em. Always will. ThankYOU Genesis.❤️🙏🙂
OMG AWESOME. I'M 64 yrs young and Phil Collins had been and always will be the best. LOVE LOVE LOVE
Oh it still gives me goosebumps. Makes my lungs to a Tom than my heart like the bass drum. I always share this to people who say Phil Collins is some middle of the road love song singer. The man is a genius in my eyes
Good job.. Chester Thompson and Phil Collins... amazing 🌿💢👍
My parents took me to see genesis when i was 10 years old, it was my first ever concert and i was up until gone 1am on a school night ! Had the following day off school as i was so tired .......
👍👍👍 thanks mum and dad, i will never forget that night 👍👍👍
Phil Collins, one of the greatest drummers!
I was there. This was awesome! A moment of a lifetime.
Absolutely genius 👏
This is the first time I see Collins on drums. It's quite remarkable.
He’s a monster on drums and he plays drums all the albums
CHOPS. These guys got 'em. Such attention to detail. Phil Collins approaches all his music and performances with the same insane precision and flawless attention to detail. Mr. Thompson and he played together for 40 yrs. and we can see why. Perfection!
Two Brilliant drummers
Awesome performance.
Phil Collins and Chester Thompson the best drummers in the world. Thanks for sharing it on youtube.
Chester is definitely one of the best. Phil, he's good but I don't see him on Chester's level. Chester, Chad Smith, and Aric Improta are my top picks.
Absolutely amazing no words can say how much true artistry the likes we don’t get anymore
I saw them in concert. I had seats behind the stage. There was no back wall. So I had front row seats of seeing these two in action. AMAZING!!!!
Chester always rocks
Take away the strife, take away the long arduous task of recording, take away the stress of thinking if the masses will accept and embrace your art. What do you have? You have the touring drummer, the best job in rock n roll. Chester Thompson is one of the best.
Who’s here in 2020.. totally amazing.. 🤯🤯
Amazing ! I think drums are the backbone of live bands ! This is sick ! :)
I agree Todd but he wasn't IMO as good as Bonzo Bonham
Genius. Both of them. Pure genius.
Totally awesome synchro drumming from Collins & Thompson....
Phil Collins may have written songs for Tarzan, but this is the true beast jungle music! :D
Effn awesome. Praises be to Phil for being a very talented songwriter, musician and the bestest drummer ever....
Phil is an under rated drummer!

Not underated at all. He is considered a great drummer
Now Chester *is* an underrated drummer.
he is the 2nd highest paid drummer in history...
John Bernardi yes he is
This is the best drum solo I have ever heard in my 53 years of life
I confess I had to watch this twice, I could not believe how fantastic it was, never heard anything so beautifully executed in my 75 years, wish I could get a recording on CD
🏅
@@wilfredmichaelis6959 it's on spotify :D
It's on Genesis Live "The Longs".
This is simply amazing. I saw them do this live 3 times and it was just life changing.
This is 6:08 of pure exhilaration! Thank you for sharing. 🥁
Great!!!
Percussions are so under appreciated
A phenomenal rhythm, synchronicity in motion
The only drum solos(duets) that don't bore the shit out of you after 30 seconds
epic...goosebumps ... love chester´s performance, when phil collins sings take me home.
Damn, awesome!!!!
Still one of my all-time favorites!
Saw the drum duel live on Invisible Touch tour.
They. Sound. Marvelous
Just Marvelous!!!
Chester Thompson & Phill Collins best drummers ever.
Nope ginger baker or jim gordon
The singer took the place of the drummer. Able to create this is aweseome. And phils tone is unique!
