Boy was I lucky! When I was there 1968-72 it cost just £300 A YEAR for 3 full terms, including breakfast, evening meal 7 days per week. We ate together at set times in a large formal dining room with a ‘high table’, as at Oxbridge. Free room cleaning and bed sheets and towel laundering weekly. My single room in Knighton Court had an old fashioned gas fire - great for making toast. The fees were covered by a non-repayable grant paid to me by my UK hometown’s local government, in addition to all my uni course fees! It cost me not one penny. Mind you, in those days only 5% of the population went to uni. But we didn’t have very fancy common rooms and no gym. But there was an elected council, which organized social events. And I was not at all the exception as this was the norm for all students - except the more wealthy ones, as there was a parental means test. You had to pay for the bus though - about 2p. if I’m not mistaken.
