Zülfü Livaneli - Odam Kireç Tutmuyor

  • This is a very famous anonymous piece, compiled from the Eskisehir region. The modern arrangement is still an anthem amongst the left wing Turkish youth, and is heartbreaking. In contrast, the original version is quite lively: www.trtturku.ne...
    The lyrics and their english translation are as follows (thanks to Cookie Ginger, Orhan Orgun and others for the suggestions/corrections):
    Odam Kirec Tutmuyor
    Odam kirectir benim
    Yuzum gulectir benim
    Soyun da gir koynuma
    Terim ilactir benim
    Odam kirec tutmuyor
    Kumunu karmayınca
    Sevda bastan gitmiyor
    Sarilip yatmayinca
    Baba ben dervis miyem
    Hirkami giymis miyem
    Ben sevdim eller aldi
    Baba ben olmus muyem
    My Room it is Whitewashed
    My room it is whitewashed
    My face it is cheerful
    Take off your clothes and enter my embrace
    My sweat it is medicine
    My room won't hold the lime,
    Unless its sand is mixed in
    The pain of love won't leave the mind
    Without laying entwined
    Father, am I a dervish?
    Have I put on my coat?
    I loved, but others took her away,
    Father, have I died?

    If I may add one more thing then: I'm quite certain the second line of the second stanza is "Kumunu karmayinca" (not katmayinca). in fact, your translation has it right, it appears.
    Otherwise, good job. I do find the line "terim ilactir benim" to be among the most sensual pieces of poetry in existence.

    Thank you Orhan bey, I changed lime to whitewash. I am not a translator, and I am aware that you cannot translate a poem, since poetry is not about the words, it is about the feeling they create. It was a very humble effort to try to preserve the feeling as best as I could. I would appreciate further suggestions very much.

    It's really difficult to translate folkloric language because they are full of culturallly specific nuances. I don't think it is appropriate to translate such poems literally. I suggest that it is more appropriate to translate using your knowledge of the English language and knowledge of English folkloric culture, looing for equivalent concepts and words using the meaning intended in the original language. You should aim for translating the mood and the sense of rythm the original has. I havent fully achieved this, I hope there will be others who are interested in translation who could improve it. I would love to discuss the meaning of each word and line in this poem, because I don't know if I have the correct interpretation in all the lines. For instance, "hırka" literally translated as 'wastecoat' is used symbolically here. I wasn't sure if the symbolism is of robes of death, robes of worship, fate orrrr perhaps a combination of those?!
    My room it is whitewashed
    My face it is friendly
    Enter my embrace in nude
    For my sweat it is healing
    My room wont hold its lime
    unless the sand is mixed in
    Love wont leave the mind
    until layed entwined
    Father am I a poor follower?
    Have I worn my coat?
    I laboured in love, but others took away
    Father have I ceased to be?

      Thank you, the original translation that I made had already become an issue in the comments earlier on, and I had to make a lot of changes. I like your translation thank you so much for taking the time. I completely agree that culturally biased things like poetry do not go well with translation, and the translator comes to a point where he/she will have to make a trade-off, and it becomes personal. Professional translators may be able to capture the rhythmic nature of the work, recreate some rhymes, but there is always so much you can do about the meanings, you can not recreate the essence in a different language. I'll go through your translation, I see there are things that I might want to borrow. Thanks again.

    • @cookieginger3147
      @cookieginger3147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iobacchy i didn't want to come across as though I was making an issue out of your translation. I think you posted the video and the translation with the intention of sharing which is great! I wanted to contribute to that post to communicate the meaning and sense of the song better. So thanks for your efforts! But I have come across translations that are works of art themselves and translation is a labour of love itself. The concept of "professionalism" is not there to be exclusive but to encourage workers to produce according to a set of standards. I think as long as you are willing to be true to the aim, (to do justice to this song) you can achieve professionalism without being "professional". I'm curious if anyone will comment on the meaning of the wastecoat! Although for that I should have posted in Turkish!!

    • @cookieginger3147
      @cookieginger3147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In fact I realise my error, the word wastecoat refers to the line above. I think "derviş" relates to being an "aşık". So, "Hırkamı giymişmiyem" probably refers to wearing the role (or uniform) of being an "aşık" which I interpret as the extension of being a "derviş". This still leaves the problem of translating that line unresolved. You can't use words like trubadour or bard because the former is not quite accurate and neother are colloquial in English, which is the appropriate register for this song/poem. Is it better to translate: Father am I a poet?
      Have I worn my ....?

    • @iobacchy
      @iobacchy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cookieginger3147 Actually I cannot say it's my translation anymore, because at various points people like yourself have come up with better suggestions and I updated the lyrics. I don't know how many times, and it's great people showing such interest. You are right, there are very good translations, made by great translators, which I definitely do not claim to be. As I said there comes a point when it becomes personal, even for poems in your own language. Different people get different things out of it.

    • @iobacchy
      @iobacchy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cookieginger3147 I'm sorry I don't like that. He may or may not be a poet, even if he is, it is because he is in love, which is why he feels like a derviş in the first place. The wastecoat means, just like the derviş who, once puts the wastecoat on never takes it off, he will never love another woman and the half crazy state he is in will last until he dies. At least he feels that way. It is impossible to translate that without ruining the whole thing, because english speaking cultures do not have this (devishes who wander the deserts etc.), it has never been the attitude of these societies. Even intellectual people who are acquainted with it, cannot fully appreciate it because they will be unfamiliar with the particular lost love feeling (which comes in all sorts of forms in various cultures) that drives the poem. But there are very nice things in your translation, and I will definitely update the translation soon. Thank you so much.
