Plan to go from Zurich to Ticono, stay at Lago Di Como, gorgeous, Milano is just a short hop on a train away to explore for a day, then head to Florence or Siena, stay a few days, then Rome, rent a car, a few days at the beach, Il San Francesco Charming Hotel in Sabaudia for example, a day trip to Isola di Ponza, then Amalfi Coast with Positano, Napoli with Vesuvio and Pompeiji, take a flight to Venice, stay a couple of days, and take a train Vienna across the Semmering. And it all will be not even 4500$ for two adults! You can also rent a holiday home in San Felice Circeo for full month of about 2500€, and is it as your base for beach and Italian food and life style. All this luxury is nice to look at, but lacks the local experience. Europe is so diverse from the North to the South, East to West. And it does not have to break the bank! Airlines like Icelandair have awesome connections via Reykjavik from almost all parts of the US, to most cities in Europe. Here in Bavaria a holiday home is about 500/week, Austria, Czech Repuplic, the Alps all within 90 minutes drive. Europe off the touristy track is so beautiful, and inexpensive, with great affordable food and uncountable sights to discover

Actually the most dangerous airport in the world is in Argentina. It is so dangerous that only 1-3 pilots are allowed to fly the route. The route is so difficult because it has a long descent. Just to get onto final the plane has to make a v shape turn because the valley does it. About 5 miles away from the airport the valley walls become a canyon and at one point the cliffs are about 10-15 feet away from the plane.
A tip for rail travel in Europe: Get an Interrail/Eurail Pass! You can use almost all non-tourist trains with it. You need to make a seat reservation for some trains, but that’s still substantially cheaper than always booking the full ticket on short notice.
First class Eurail ticket with reservations comes out to €567,74 pp. They paid €1033.70 pp. for the trains. Taking a more direct route costs €441 and you have 3 spare days left. And going for second class lowers it to €357 and 3 spare days. Or €286 + 3 spare days if you are under 27.

As a Swiss, I have to add that you guys were very unlucky with cancellations / delays - usually not the case at all - keep in mind that there was lots of flooding mid-June and that was most likely the main reason for your journey trough Switzerland being a little more “fluid” 😂

I worked as a tour guide in the Swiss Alps for two years and the trains area. huge part of how the Swiss get around, a lot of my friends did nto own cars and if they did they would rarely use them. Teh Swiss rail system is coordinated with Post Auto (Swiss Bus) and it's possible to get from the smallest village on end of the country to a small village in the other end of the country only using rail and bus. If it was nto for massive rains they had this spring and summer that damaged tracks your Swiss rail journey would have been flawless and on time to the minute..
What I find the most fascinating is the evidence of all the OLD Landslides and basically half a mountain eroding away! The power of time and nature. That really gives one a new perspective on the longevity of mountains!

Tip for future travel/videos in Switzerland. Basel has 2 main train stations. The SBB, which is Swiss, and the Badischer Bahnhof, which is actually a German exclave entirely inside Switzerland. Pre Schengen Agreement, there was a border crossing checkpoint inside the train station. Basel's airport (Euro Airport) is really located in France. It is the only airport in the world run by two countries (Switzerland and France) and has two different airport codes (BSL and MLH, which stands for Mulhouse). So you can actually fly into BSL and out of MLH. Pre Schengen Agreement, this airport also had a border crossing in the check in hall. One side of the airport is Swiss and the other is French. There are two sets of rental car counters (one Swiss and one French), two sets of roads to and from the airport, two sets of customs exits from the baggage claim, etc. If you want to explore a new airline, Air Transat flies its A321 LR from Montreal to Basel. Basel is also an EasyJet hub, so it's easy to fly practically anywhere in Europe direct. Lastly, there is a tunnel for cars connecting the German cities of Loerrach and Weil am Rhein. However, the tunnel runs entirely underneath Swiss soil. The Swiss got tired of Germans using a shortcut through Switzerland to travel from one to the other, so a tunnel was built.

To be fair though, they took a very indirect route. They could have taken the hs train from venice to milan, then one to paris and at last one to paris.
You two had the worst luck! In 20 years of vacationing in Switzerland, we were only delayed once for more than five minutes. That was due to clearing an avalanche from the tracks between Visp and Zermatt. Thanks so much for the beautiful video. It really makes me long for another trip to Europe 😊
I was just in Austria earlier this month. Took the trains all over but didn’t do any super long trips. Vienna to Budapest was the longest but I didn’t leave enough time to enjoy Budapest, so I’ll be going back again one day to do it properly. The views through parts of Austria, like on the way to Salzburg and Hallstatt were awesome. Took trains a few years ago while in Zurich, throughout Switzerland and those views were STUNNING.

What fun ... even with the nail-biting, and confusion! I'm watching this in 5 minute (or so) segments. Each segment is a break from packing for my AMTRAK journey from San Francisco ... AKA, "beautiful downtown Emeryville" ... to Seattle, tomorrow. Trains are great, and train-people are fun people. I've loved trains in Italy, France and The UK. I've never done Switzerland, but it's on the list. I have a few more segments, to go. And, this presentation is making packing more fun. Thanks.
It's way better to take those trains, and even busses, than the Orient Express. The scenery you get when travelling at a slower pace is worth much more than the tickets for the Orient Express.

Hey guys, Weekend travel by trains in Europe is known for when they do the maintenance work as you guys found out. A lot of train companies make their money from weekday commuters hence the weekend track maintenance. Still you had some unexpected fun!
I did the Glacier Express route via regional trains from Zermatt to Chur in the spring. It was great, and the advantage of the regional trains was we could get off for an hour in Andermatt to eat lunch.
I saw Hakone Tozan Railway has lots of ads of Glacier Express even though Hakone is nothing like this (Hakone is beautiful too). Thank you for amazing videos always. I like 40 minutes video. :)
This video is PURE GOLD. To me the fact that you did the orient express for less is an ANECDOTE. What you suggested is an amazing holiday from Milan to Paris, (you can take passengers trains as you said and the cost goes down), the landscape is the same and the price goes down. You can stay at the hotels outside the peak season. And you can save $1000 on the eurostar to London as the fact to end in London for this kind of holiday may not be necessary. Please continue combining travel adventures with flight adventures, probably this is what makes this channel being AWESOME.

I screamed when I saw you were traveling in "my" Switzerland! I travel weekly through this beautiful country to visit things left, right, and centre. 🎉 I had to smile as I recognised every single place you saw in Switzerland. ❤ Yes this year has been extreem with the landslides, so a lot of busses instead of trains. Also a tip for travellers to not so cheap Switzerland: you don't have to book these expensive Express trains, the normal train also go along the same routes and are way cheaper. Enjoy Switzerland! ❤
Always plan your European train trips wit enough transfer time, 15 of 20 minutes is usually not enough, I usually plan with at least 45 to 60 minutes transfer time for long distance trains because of delays. Especially when you travel with different companies, they don't wait for each other when delayed. If you're not train bound or travel with a regular train, if possible take one train earlier to catch a long distance train, I've seen a lot of passengers miss their train because the connecting train was delayed.
For me it depends on the circumstances on the route I am taking. just check the next trains before the trip in case you miss connection. Often times you have a lot of alternatives which you can use, as long as you have the trip as a single ticket. Of course if it’s the last train of the day or not many trains run on the route by all means plan a lot of time.
@@szymex22 That's one way, but if you travel in 1st or business class and have reserved seats then missing your train and taking the nest one results in or a downgrade because all seats are reserved. And if you have multiple trains after the first missed connection the delays can ad up onward to your final destination.
@@ArjenVyeah that’s true definitely for reserved seats better to plan more for connections. Also another option is that the conductor or staff at the stations can give you a new reservation in case of missed connection, as long as the train is not fully booked

Awesome video as always Jeb! We were in Europe back in April and did the Glacier Express and rode the Frecciarossa down to Salerno. I am right with you about how intimidating it was to start train travel in Europe but by the end of our 5 weeks there it was like I was a local.

This will enable travelers to make informed decisions as to whether or not this is their cup of tea. For me, it's not. You just saved me a lot of money.
A friend and I visited Zermat in February this year from Aigle (near Montreux) station in Switzerland. It was an amazing experience. Train travel was so reliable in winter. The scenery was insane!!!!! I LOVE trains and your journey was so much fun,,, even with bus rides and staying over in certain places! Well done. Alsmot felt like The Amazing Race!! Bravo!
I love love your work! You and your lovely wife are always so enjoyable to watch. But this made me smile. My wife and I took those trains on our summer trip in Italy and December trip to Switzerland in 2023. To get lounge access we had to press the call button because our tickets also didn't work.. Yes that 1st class was amazing my wife used the lounge to do some work, but it has to be booked prior to departure. Bologna has a lovely Central station, and Milan Centrale is a madhouse. The Swiss trains were amazing Zermatt leaves you speechless. Please please , try Switzerland again between Thanksgiving and Christmas absolutely magical. The commentary you two provided was spot on with everything. Two thumbs up!
Northern Italy from Milan to St. Moritz is absolutely stunning, but I totally agree with you that travelling there is very hectic and confusing. I travelled by car and never felt in control of the situation. Local knowledge is almost mandatory. Great review! It really brought me back.

What a great video Jeb WOW! I usually am not a fan of rail over air travel but the views have to be something to win me over to the train at least on short trips in Europe! However, from Venice to London I'd fly with ITA or British Airways for faster and far less stress & money then The Orient Express! Fluid . . . not the word that came to my mind - 🤣. Had the same experience with the Bermina Express when I tried it during the winter - close due to unstable (avalanche danger) snow conditions. Plan to try it again. Not sure if the train was running up the Matterhorn but it's a great ride during the winter.

You could have saved a lot of money by buying an Eurail (for overseas) or interrail pass. 1st class availabe, you need to pay some surcharge for long dostance trais, but even the glacier express is covered if you pay the reservation fee.

In Britain nothing instills fear in a rail passenger, than getting to a station and there being a rail replacement bus service, the pain is very real.

Tip for future travel/videos in Switzerland. Basel has 2 main train stations. The SBB, which is Swiss, and the Badischer Bahnhof, which is actually a German exclave entirely inside Switzerland. Pre Schengen Agreement, there was a border crossing checkpoint inside the train station. Basel's airport (Euro Airport) is really located in France. It is the only airport in the world run by two countries (Switzerland and France) and has two different airport codes (BSL and MLH, which stands for Mulhouse). So you can actually fly into BSL and out of MLH. Pre Schengen Agreement, this airport also had a border crossing in the check in hall. One side of the airport is Swiss and the other is French. There are two sets of rental car counters (one Swiss and one French), two sets of roads to and from the airport, two sets of customs exits from the baggage claim, etc. If you want to explore a new airline, Air Transat flies its A321 LR from Montreal to Basel. Basel is also an EasyJet hub, so it's easy to fly practically anywhere in Europe direct. Lastly, there is a tunnel for cars connecting the German cities of Loerrach and Weil am Rhein. However, the tunnel runs entirely underneath Swiss soil. The Swiss got tired of Germans using a shortcut through Switzerland to travel from one to the other, so a tunnel was built.

You two had the worst luck! In 20 years of vacationing in Switzerland, we were only delayed once for more than five minutes. That was due to clearing an avalanche from the tracks between Visp and Zermatt. Thanks so much for the beautiful video. It really makes me long for another trip to Europe 😊

I was just in Austria earlier this month. Took the trains all over but didn’t do any super long trips. Vienna to Budapest was the longest but I didn’t leave enough time to enjoy Budapest, so I’ll be going back again one day to do it properly.
The views through parts of Austria, like on the way to Salzburg and Hallstatt were awesome.
Took trains a few years ago while in Zurich, throughout Switzerland and those views were STUNNING.

What fun ... even with the nail-biting, and confusion! I'm watching this in 5 minute (or so) segments. Each segment is a break from packing for my AMTRAK journey from San Francisco ... AKA, "beautiful downtown Emeryville" ... to Seattle, tomorrow. Trains are great, and train-people are fun people. I've loved trains in Italy, France and The UK. I've never done Switzerland, but it's on the list. I have a few more segments, to go. And, this presentation is making packing more fun. Thanks.

It's way better to take those trains, and even busses, than the Orient Express. The scenery you get when travelling at a slower pace is worth much more than the tickets for the Orient Express.

Weekend travel by trains in Europe is known for when they do the maintenance work as you guys found out. A lot of train companies make their money from weekday commuters hence the weekend track maintenance.
Still you had some unexpected fun!
I did the Glacier Express route via regional trains from Zermatt to Chur in the spring. It was great, and the advantage of the regional trains was we could get off for an hour in Andermatt to eat lunch.

This video is PURE GOLD. To me the fact that you did the orient express for less is an ANECDOTE. What you suggested is an amazing holiday from Milan to Paris, (you can take passengers trains as you said and the cost goes down), the landscape is the same and the price goes down. You can stay at the hotels outside the peak season. And you can save $1000 on the eurostar to London as the fact to end in London for this kind of holiday may not be necessary. Please continue combining travel adventures with flight adventures, probably this is what makes this channel being AWESOME.

Yes this year has been extreem with the landslides, so a lot of busses instead of trains.
Also a tip for travellers to not so cheap Switzerland: you don't have to book these expensive Express trains, the normal train also go along the same routes and are way cheaper. Enjoy Switzerland! ❤

None of the hardships that you face in a journey matters if the route is that mesmerising. One heck of a journey you too, keep up the amazing work 👍
Always plan your European train trips wit enough transfer time, 15 of 20 minutes is usually not enough, I usually plan with at least 45 to 60 minutes transfer time for long distance trains because of delays.
Especially when you travel with different companies, they don't wait for each other when delayed.
If you're not train bound or travel with a regular train, if possible take one train earlier to catch a long distance train, I've seen a lot of passengers miss their train because the connecting train was delayed.

For me it depends on the circumstances on the route I am taking. just check the next trains before the trip in case you miss connection. Often times you have a lot of alternatives which you can use, as long as you have the trip as a single ticket. Of course if it’s the last train of the day or not many trains run on the route by all means plan a lot of time.
@@szymex22 That's one way, but if you travel in 1st or business class and have reserved seats then missing your train and taking the nest one results in or a downgrade because all seats are reserved. And if you have multiple trains after the first missed connection the delays can ad up onward to your final destination.
@@ArjenVyeah that’s true definitely for reserved seats better to plan more for connections. Also another option is that the conductor or staff at the stations can give you a new reservation in case of missed connection, as long as the train is not fully booked

Awesome video as always Jeb! We were in Europe back in April and did the Glacier Express and rode the Frecciarossa down to Salerno. I am right with you about how intimidating it was to start train travel in Europe but by the end of our 5 weeks there it was like I was a local.

Thanks for showing the good, the bad, and the ugly about taking a trip like this, especially the challenges of regular train cancellations and replacement bus services. This will enable travelers to make informed decisions as to whether or not this is their cup of tea. For me, it's not. You just saved me a lot of money.

A friend and I visited Zermat in February this year from Aigle (near Montreux) station in Switzerland. It was an amazing experience. Train travel was so reliable in winter. The scenery was insane!!!!! I LOVE trains and your journey was so much fun,,, even with bus rides and staying over in certain places! Well done. Alsmot felt like The Amazing Race!! Bravo!

My wife and I took those trains on our summer trip in Italy and December trip to Switzerland in 2023.
To get lounge access we had to press the call button because our tickets also didn't work..
Yes that 1st class was amazing my wife used the lounge to do some work, but it has to be booked prior to departure.
Bologna has a lovely Central station, and Milan Centrale is a madhouse.
The Swiss trains were amazing Zermatt leaves you speechless.
Please please , try Switzerland again between Thanksgiving and Christmas absolutely magical.

Northern Italy from Milan to St. Moritz is absolutely stunning, but I totally agree with you that travelling there is very hectic and confusing. I travelled by car and never felt in control of the situation. Local knowledge is almost mandatory. Great review! It really brought me back.

What a great video Jeb WOW! I usually am not a fan of rail over air travel but the views have to be something to win me over to the train at least on short trips in Europe! However, from Venice to London I'd fly with ITA or British Airways for faster and far less stress & money then The Orient Express! My favs in this video have to be you on the TGV my favorite train & that BEAUTIFUL Airbus H-125 also knows as the AS-350 "A-Star" helicopter spraying pesticides at 30:23

Fluid . . . not the word that came to my mind - 🤣. Had the same experience with the Bermina Express when I tried it during the winter - close due to unstable (avalanche danger) snow conditions. Plan to try it again. Not sure if the train was running up the Matterhorn but it's a great ride during the winter.

You could have saved a lot of money by buying an Eurail (for overseas) or interrail pass. 1st class availabe, you need to pay some surcharge for long dostance trais, but even the glacier express is covered if you pay the reservation fee.
