Hey Dude, I love your enthusiasm, and very informative, friendly banter. I live in Thailand, but I’m from Newport Beach, California. I just spent a month in Japan, went all over I love it.
This was a wonderful and intricate video and I loved the meet up. I had my 8th birthday in Tokyo as a gaijin kid and it was the happiest time of my life..
Thanks John, I'd be lost without your Only in Japan*GO feeds although I've been missing the live feeds even if a few hours after there always an interesting picture of Japan, a place I've always liked and love the people and there culture. again thanks!!
Honestly, I don't know why I'm subscribed to you, I even have to miss at least 90% of your streams. But I always try to find time to watch them later ^^
I just visited this area today and can say it’s legit. Thank you for the suggestion. Well worth the visit for a day. Most shops opens at 12 on a Wednesday.
There were LARPers when I went there in October. Right outside the station there's that little section that has the "welcome to Shimokitazawa" sign, they had a bunch of stalls selling LARP gear too. Was interesting.
Yes! Hiragana and katakana are the way to start. I think it's standard to learn hiragana first... but it seems to me that it might be better for someone who knows English to start with katakana. Foreign words, like that "chocolate waffle" and stuff are printed in katakana, and it gives you a big rush when you can actually read a menu like that and understand the information, even without knowing any Japanese words yet. Also, sometimes Japanese words are written in katakana, like karaoke. Just learning how to sound out katakana will help _so much_ in navigating Tokyo. And there are even cute little apps you can download for free that will teach you. :D
what a coincident. I was in Futagotamakawa about 2 weeks ago visiting a friend. you should definitely do an episode there.. area around the station was superb.
Really love this episode, John. It's great to see a part of Tokyo I'm not familiar with. Thanks for the tour! (I'd love it if you could explore Ogikubo, a neighborhood where my family lived when I was a kid....)
Stayed a couple days in Shimokitazawa some years ago and i liked it, Forgot to visit this last trip but seeing your stream from there realize i need to go next time :) Miss Japan so much hehe
Japan is probably the only country where i wouldn't mind getting lost ...well maybe except in Japanese forest and Mountains but ya get my point. Venturing off the beaten track might lead you to hidden gems.
Next time you go to Shimokitazawa, you should visit restaurant called Cafe Normale. Make great panini sandwiches. House made panini breads. Oh, so you did go cafe Normale. It is really great place to eat.
My daughter and I were there in July. Had vegan food, sweet potato bubble tea, she got huge bag if clothes for school yr at mode off ... 150 yen each! Thrift stores and vintage are meticulous. I headed straight there for a chill vibe
After the stream I browsed a little and WOW - it really has some great stuff here, higher recommendation than Harajuku for vintage clothing. I’ll have to come back in the fall and see how it’s changed. The city is evolving so fast - post summer Olympics we should see some amazing changes when the crowds go home.
OH you should have pop around Kawasaki/Kamata area lol in my 3 trip to Japan I stayed around Kawasaki and Kamata area cause hotels and Airbnb were cheap around those two area. You come out of the station, don't matter which side, you are surrounded with pachinko parlors. Specially Kamata and Kawasaki are old red light district, so you also got drunk salaryman until very late at night (authentic Tokyo experience IMHO)!
Yeh the Aussie hunters!!!! 😬 Shimo was not bad we went 4 years ago it was hipster area then too but I just didn't feel it!!! Over priced second hand shops I like them but toooooo expensive for second hand john!!! But that's only me!!! Nice to see you guys back in jp!!! U need that break away but!!!! 👍
There is a lot to discover here! It’s worth a good half day just walking around. Not sure about the famous track - from where is it famous? It’s the crossing of the Odakyu and Keio Inokashira Line.
However, Shimokitazawa is starting to change, brought on by the "undergrounding" of the Odakyu Odawara Line through the neighborhood in recent years (Indeed, there was a *LOT* of controversy over this change, since many feared it would "gentrify" the neighborhood).
Hello. I noticed that you never wear a mouth mask. I understand because you have a channel. Do you avoid making vdo when you are sick or..... sorry to ask this question. I might have missed your vdo when wearing a mask.
The whole copyrighted background music thing that you mentioned I think you shouldn't have to worry about., i mean all your doing is recording yourself stroll around town and the music just so happens to be there. It's not like you put the music over the video yourself, i think you will be fine and you shouldn't worry about it.
I agree and expressed this to TH-cam. It’s like walking into a landmine! I don’t mind the demo Itozaki on as much as TH-cam not suggesting it as much. Creators create to be watched, enjoyed so people learn or feel something from it.

I just love the feel of this place. Shops from a whole other era. A lot of character. 😎
Yes! I hope it stays that way for a while longer.
Thank you for showing the streets and neighborhoods. This is so fun to watch.
Kinda like walking into a time machine of sorts to the past. Neat!!

I just visited this area today and can say it’s legit. Thank you for the suggestion. Well worth the visit for a day. Most shops opens at 12 on a Wednesday.
Coolest part of Tokyo, along with Koenji.
Very interesting authentic neighborhood 👌🏻
I was there in October to visit a friend, I loved it.
Shimokitazawa is one of my favourite neighbourhood in Tokyo. I miss it. Will def comeback 🤗
There were LARPers when I went there in October. Right outside the station there's that little section that has the "welcome to Shimokitazawa" sign, they had a bunch of stalls selling LARP gear too. Was interesting.
I've been looking for places where they have second hand shops and the vibe looks really cool.

I should go there for lunch. Passed there when ridden the Odakyu Line to Machida. Paolo from Tokyo explored where to eat.
It's a nice and not too crowded to do shopping and to eat in Tokyo.

VideO looks real crisp 👍🏼
Brian Lopez the live streams are getting better! Combo of iPhone 11 pro and better app integration with 4G LTE! Great job TH-cam!
There is an ambience about Shimokita that separates that area from the hustle and bustle of Central Tokyo. Laid back atmosphere.
looks like a nice area
I wonder if those places are still there.
Oh Kinkan are called Kumquats here in the U.S. and Mikans are Satsuma Mandarin oranges.
Only place in Tokyo I felt comfortable walking around with my tattoos
OMG, a paper map, did you pick it up at an antiques store?
Japan is probably the only country where i wouldn't mind getting lost ...well maybe except in Japanese forest and Mountains but ya get my point. Venturing off the beaten track might lead you to hidden gems.
Niku-N-Roll might be a play on words for, "Rock-n_Roll."

It would be nice to meet you. I'm in Japan, staying at Asakusa at Kaminarimon. I'm here until 11 January.
last time i went to tokyo with my wife a year ago.. we didn't plan anything, just strolling around, and yes we ended up at Shimoki..
2019 was so good tho.
Avacados are popular with the Hipsters and Trader Joes customers.
Jealous of the people that get to watch this live. Eventually I'll catch one, John.
Now just gotta finish my bachelors and I'll be over there myself 😍

Used, used used, yay! Lack of chain shops yay! 👍
Was wondering - is Pachinko a thing of the past now? I've never seen any parlors during your wanderings.
OH you should have pop around Kawasaki/Kamata area lol

I thought that station looked familiar, I was in that town to shop at Sunny Hobby.

No idea on prices but if it’s expensive, they call it “vintage” 😂
@@onlyinjapanGO 😂😂😂😂
Thought there is a popular rail track in that place?

John you should come back in montreal this is where I'm from and if you come to visit I will show you the
Best poutine restaurant in town ^^ ^_^
The cheese curry roll looked messy! The Tiger Prince at 58:41 looks like Kim Jong-un in makeup, silly hair, and an animal outfit
Avery the Cuban-American very messy - not too big, three bits :)
Coming from 2023 I miss how cheap or I'd say appropriately priced all these groceries were back then😂😭😂😭
Murfy beds are making a comeback in tiny homes and mini apartments.
26:45 50 dollars for 24GB data!??!?!?!?!?!? You can get unlimited everything for 29 USD here in the UK... Or 30GB for 24 USD.
Hello. I noticed that you never wear a mouth mask. I understand because you have a channel. Do you avoid making vdo when you are sick or..... sorry to ask this question. I might have missed your vdo when wearing a mask.
Pre-Covid!!!
Yeyeyeyeyeah gutted banned from last live stream for saying pause hilarious saludos from Cali 😎👍
Is this place similar to Amerikamura in Osaka?
