    Time-lapse of making a hardcover Japanese stab binding book for an upcoming fair - thought I'd record the process from start to finish.

    after many wandering days and nights at last I decided to get back in track and do some studying.
    suddenly I noticed I need a new notebook to give a fresh start.
    so I gathered some papers and tried to stretch, and I noticed I am lacking book binding skill.
    after watching bunch of tutorial
    now I am arguing with my brain which stretch will be strong and looks beautiful, Japanese / Belgian / Indian.........
    in the meanwhile "study " has left the chat.

    I’ve made a several little sketch pads like that with more simple stitching. I never thought of using end pages in this method of binding. I’ll have to add them next time.

      @@asthenamesuggests9513 It isn't a tutorial. It's a time lapse so it doesn't necessarily have to show everything step by step. Still, there are other videos that demo the whole process step by step. The hard part is the sewing.

    • @CrystalShaulis
      @CrystalShaulis  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Nayanka, were you looking for the detailed measurements as well as materials? For materials, it is book board (or chip board), cloth for the spine, decorative paper for the cover and any kind of thread for sewing. The metal bars used are 1/4" and 1/2" spacers that you can find at craft shops or you can eyeball the spacing instead. Bone folder is helpful but you could get away with not using one.

    Assuming your working with a book that's over 100 pages does anyone know if at that point you can just use a cordless drill for the binding holes or will that tear up the paper too much ?

  • @chattaboxqueen
    @chattaboxqueen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you bind individual sheets or already bound pages within the cover?

    • @CrystalShaulis
      @CrystalShaulis  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +chattaboxqueen You can do either. If you have text/writing already on the pages then make sure you have a wide enough margin for the spine area (this will be sewn through and therefore not visible).
      Traditionally, loose pages are used -- or folded sheets that are simply stacked on top of one another.

    • @CrystalShaulis

      Sure! It's starched book cloth for the spine, and an embossed black paper for the rest of the cover. You could also use only book cloth for the entire cover, which is really common and just as beautiful.

      Actually glue has been around for 1,000s of years. The earliest glues were made from animal hides, like rabbit skin, and were heated and applied hot. This is still the way traditional gesso is made (heated animal skin glue+ marble dust for white color) for rigid painting supports.
