- This is a video tour of my teardrop camper. I include a lot of descriptions and pictures of the build and how I did it. It's substantially finished now, just need to buff out the scratches and get a finish on it. We've tried it one time and I made a few changes based on what we found in the shake down trip.

Absolutely brilliant. I've started a teardrop project - just finished assembling the Northern Tool 5' x 8' aluminum trailer kit. I had the same framing idea - build an independent aluminum frame that then be bolted to the trailer. Your teardrop is the first one I've seen that has done this. Thanks so much for sharing, and kudos to your neighbor/camera operator - nice steady video!
Nice design. Great idea with brazing the aluminum. The whole time I am watching I am thinking this looks like Texas...then I see the plate!

nice job Jerrold. I actually weld aluminum all the time as well I designed and built my own cnc plasma table..I am currently working on building a teardrop style travel trailer from all aluminum..it's nice to see you've done it...

Such an awesome build. I just finished mine (very similar) a few weeks ago. Get some lap sealant around that vent fan though!

Love your project! I am dreaming to build a tear drop to pull with my karmann ghia. Your motorcycle is probably more powerfull than that. This is exactly what I am looking for

I like the idea of aluminum wall framing. I had been thinking of doing something similar. I was thinking of using steel studs and turning them to the two inch thickness to be the depth of the wall.
That should work, but it will be quite a lot heavier.

This is one of the greatest I have seen so far. particularly how you did the hatch. you certainly put a lot of thought into it. Would you be willing to share your plans?
I would share them, but the plans I created were really more preliminary for me. A lot of the details I worked out as I was building it. I even changed the shape a bit. My plans just wouldn't be very helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to post the video. It gave me some ideas for a "truck cap" style removable enclosed cover on a Northern Tools trailer I plan on getting. I like the idea of a light, aluminum frame skinned with a aluminum sides to make it easier and lighter for hauling and removal. Talking to the rep at Metal Supermarket today, i was informed there are two types of aluminum tubing they carry, 6061 and 6063, I presume you used one of these? Also, what thickness aluminum did you use on the sides and top?
You did a beautiful job and should be very proud of your work. I hate to tell you but brazing wasnt the best choice. Vibrations from the road will rattle every joint apart over time. You have no penetration into the base metal. Keep and eye on it and be careful.

I think the brazing is holding up well. I sold it shortly after I finished it and haven't heard anything from the new owner, so I guess no news is good news?

Did you use glue or tape to mount the aluminum sheeting to the frame? Or what was your method of fastening it?
I really like your build. You did an excellent job. 600 lbs empty weight is the best I have seen for any teardrop trailer. I am definitely going to add the HDHomeRun to my trailer. One thing I am curious about. How are the temps in the trailer compared to ambient temps outside? The reason I ask is that I stayed away from aluminum skin as I figured it would difficult to keep the inside of the trailer cool. Also what part of Texas are you from? I am in Round Rock.
I'm in Georgetown. I only used it a couple times in the early spring before I sold it. Certainly wouldn't want to try to use it this month (100+ temps)!!

Jerrold, my daughter wants to build one of these teardrops. My question regards the trailer. How does the trailer perform at higher speeds? Is there a max speed that you personally feel good with?
It performed very well up to about 70 mph. Never tried to take it beyond that, but I would think it would be fine. The critical factor is making sure it is "front heavy". Ideally, the weight on the tongue should be about 10% of the total weight of the trailer, so if the trailer, fully loaded, is 800 lbs., then the weight on the tongue should be about 80 lbs. I had the battery mounted in the back and found that the weight on the tongue was far too light, so I added the storage box on the front and moved the battery to the storage box to fix the problem.

Beautiful work Jerrold. I have wanted to build a 3x6.5 foot version to use behind my Goldwing Trike. Weight has held me back. The aluminum framed walls would be the ticket. I can find the Bender at harbor freight but it only accommodates round tube as I'm sure you know. Can you tell me where you got the nylon isnerts to bend the square tubing? Thanks in advance. what would you estimate the total build cost?
I ended up putting about $5000 in it. Made a couple mistakes with the aluminum sheet and had to buy more

Haha! No, I don't build them to sell. Just wanted to try it for myself one time. Kept me busy through the winter though!
whats a good glue for attaching lauan to aluminum?
Been a couple years since I did this, but I think I used Gorilla Construction Glue.
