@@blacknwhitegaming hand and feet secret attack…. After drawing your palm construct (trapezoid thingy) just draw the fingertips where you want them, like little circles that are place holders. Then connect the circles back to the hand to finish construction. I usually elongate the circles into that whole segment of finger first. At that point you should see clearly the pose you’re trying to construct.
About breasts as owner of pair of these: Bigger they are, lower they hang. Even with support, even with implants - gravity is gravity. Also - shape of bra changes how they are placed with relation to each other - There are bras which squize them together, there are ones that will allow more spacing. If bra cup shape don't match how breast rest it will look wrong, so when searching for references take extra minute to check what bra type model has to match or change it for your character. And ffs breast are not baloons filled with water, they won't behave like that (they don't go boing-boing...) BTW, breast shape of Marc's drawings match usually bardotte bra, it tend to do cause this characteristic crease at muscle/fat border :)
Hey Marc I'm 19 and started drawing about 3-4 months ago. I wish I would have started earlier but I played too much video games back then but better than never. I never knew how incredibly beautiful art can be especially when you learn to look at the world with your eyes from an artistic point of view or when you just try to represent everything in geometric shapes simplistically. I will do my best to become extremely good at it and work hard at it. The video was very helpful and will apply everything and keep it strongly in mind.
Hi there just wanted send some friendly encouragement and positive vibes. 😊 I also wanted to say don't be shy to use stick figure placement to figure out how you want to make a character stand, pose, etc. I usually go from that because it helps me see it better. Then I usually draw my shapes and proportions around the area and perfecting the anatomy via shapes best I can. 👌 hope this helps. ❤
Hey buddy! I actually started my journey too when I was 19 and by the same reasons you mentioned. Being 21 now I can confirm it's one of the best decisions I could've done in my life, you can improve a lot. Don't underestimate what you can achieve in two years and believe in you, good luck!
Used to draw a lot as a child and some in my teens but gave it up for some reason I can’t recall. I’m 31 now and been back at it for over a year and made such a large improvement thanks to this channel. It’s never too late to start art

I'm actually working on a picture right now, and struggling with the anatomy of it. The arms are too long and not lining up with the hips, but was unsure of how to fix it. This video answered some questions I had and it's already looking better. Thanks Marc!

I didn't know the humerus was longer than the forearm, or the upper leg being the longest bone of the body to draw. No wonder a lot of my figures felt very off. Thanks for these insights 😀
Yup… I’m generally good at spotting and having a general idea of the correct proportions of things…but at the same time I’ll work through a piece, finish it but feel like something isn’t quite right but won’t be sure what it is, and then an hour later see all the stuff I screwed up on lol. And I’m a traditional artist who uses pen, markers, and colored pencils…so once it’s done it’s done. No turning back or fixing it. The stress with doing the lineart is REAL.
Anatomy is basically my worst enemy, (along with classmates who come up behind me when I'm practicing it and ask why I'm drawing naked people) and honestly, even just looking at bodies that are well drawn helps me a bunch. This was super great and maybe now, two years after I started to draw figures, I can actually make my characters look more normal
Hi Marc, I have a video suggestion that I didn't see anyone talking about: signing in the art. You could talk of how we could do that the best way, the size and best place to put it, when we need to put it on the piece and how to prevent it from being something distracting from the art itself, or even ruining the composition. And, maybe, other things related to copyrights. Would be awesome.

I’m only a hobbyist artist, but I really have a passion for art and have always wanted to improve just for my own enjoyment. My family doesn’t really have a lot of money, and all the art tutorials that cost money kind of discouraged me and I sorta felt like not having the money would hinder my abilities. It’s really you and other TH-camrs that post good art advice that anyone can watch for free, and I wanted to thank you for providing classes like this that are easy to access for people struggling monetarily. I was trying to draw a reference of a girl the other day (kneeling on the street with an umbrella) and it really broke my spirit because I couldn't construct her properly since I had no idea how to since her clothes were so baggy. It made me question if I have even been learning anything all this time. Since then I've seriously gone back to learning construction, this time using Square (I usually avoided them before since I used to think they made figures look stiff). I learned the LSF method and bean bag method and honestly those were game changers. Gestures feel so much easier now because I'm not so clueless. I also learned that this is the approach I should have taken with the baggy clothes girl: 1. Find a more naked reference so I could better see the form 2. Deconstruct and construct 3. Use the baggy reference to draw clothes and folds That mistake really broke my spirit for the day but now I feel even stronger since I identified my weakness and devised a method to avoid it/do better next time
All of this is excellent advice. And I would add the key to mastery will be practice, practice, and practice. After over 1000+ figure drawings using reference, I can say only three things (1) I can draw a competent figure and only occasionally use construction lines, measuring with my eye; (2) I can visualize the foreshortened figure in almost any pose--still need some reference for difficult poses; and (3) I still have a long ways to go. I think after about 10,000 figure sketches I could say I'll have some degree of mastery (low tier mastery at that). Just one tip: After hundreds of drawings using reference, you will see how varied the human body is. That's why I don't use formal construction lines (Loomis, Reilly, etc...) as they tend to make you draw the same figure or variant all of the time. You'll build a good intuition of what looks right and for stylized art you can push (and you should push) some of the proportions like wider hips and narrower waist for female characters like the character artist for NieR: Automata and NieR: Reincarnation.
@@swisdom9117 *Sorry, but this is long* I've counted every single one as I used (at home) Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop and (when out) iPad with Procreate. I started with a sketchbook, but honestly you will level up faster with digital. With traditional, I used a non-photo blue pencil (Pilot Color Eno 0.5mm) for roughs, Pentel 0.5mm mechanical pencil with 2B lead for the finished drawing, and a kneaded eraser. Traditional is perfectly fine and I still prefer it in many ways, but the advantage of digital is layers and ability to correct without destroying the paper. You can experiment and not be worried about going back to your original. Some people will say that they're better traditional, but after hundreds of drawings you'll be completely comfortable with digital. I even did the drawabox challenge (250 boxes in 3-point perspective) using digital and did the challenge multiple times. This challenge is great because you will end up seeing everything as boxes in 3-point perspective which will help with foreshortened figure drawings. I started over a year ago and did an assessment that my figure drawings needed (vast) improvement. I did start with a self-challenge of a 100 and it definitely wasn't enough. I would say that it was at the 300 point that I saw a big level up. Initially, I had to do a construction, a rough sketch, and a final sketch. Even the construction was a challenge as the proportions were off. The rough sketch was a mess as now I was adding organic lines to the construction. The final sketch was where I tried to clean everything up. It took 20-30+ minutes for each figure. Now, I wasn't doing gesture drawing or timed exercises as I was doing figure drawing for specific reasons: as a way to improve my seeing (proportions, negative space, relative size, etc) and drawing decent figures faster. By the 700 point, I could freehand draw within 5-10 minutes..longer for hard poses like back poses. Still need tons of work on the back poses. Drawing a convincing female back pose is significantly harder than a male one. That's why most drawings of female characters are from the front or side and very few from the back.

Well the pose is to be exaggerated and unrealistic but believable. One example my favorite artist Michael Turner, was said to be great but many say his proportions where not correct. But his work to me was perfect. It separates you from others. It needs to make sense but dynamic as well.
I really like the way you explain things mixed with a portion of humor. You are really the first and only person who was able to explain things so good, that I really improved drawing them. For example hair. I looked at so many hair drawing tutorials, but they couldn't explain it properly, but after you made this video explaining how to draw hair, I suddenly was able to draw it! Still need a lot of practice though, but drawing hair is so much easier for me now. So really thank you for doing these videos!

these are things i already knew XD often times i notice anatomy mistakes waayy after i finish ;-; like the legs on a child character be so lonnnnggggggg, i improved since then tho taking breaks after sketches so i can make sure my anatomy is pitch perfect and not messed uo

I have been watching your videos for quite a while, as a young artist I tend to expect too much of myself when it comes to art and I scrap most of my digital pieces before finishing. I usually stick to the simple stuff and even then it’s difficult. Your videos helped me in a lot of ways when it comes to digital art, so I kind of just wanted to say thanks and I’m sure you’ve helped many others too :)

Mark, thanks to your anatomy videos I can draw the human figure pretty decently! I no longer get the proportions wrong as much as before, and recently I gained a better understanding about the different body types thanks to the structure classes and practicing/studying to simplify the body parts to simple 3d volumes. I practice drawing spheres, cubes and cylinders in perspective and in different angles sometimes, so that helped a big deal as well. I still have a long way to go, but recently I've been practicing (and *observing* ) intensely and thanks to that I think I'm improving really fast!
Thanks a LOT for these anatomy tips, i always struggle with anatomy and what shapes to use for the body. Im always trying to find a good way to construct the body but i hope you can make a tutorial on how to make your own ways of drawing things and how to be creative when drawing. I'm using Krita to draw.
I draw often characters „naked“ to study the body proportions and it is fun. You are right in all points. I draw over 15 years and drawing over 10 years humanoids. I learned much, but it could be still better. I don‘t need art class or lesson to learn to draw, but I use to like references and „body study“ pictures to get more experience in drawing. And it works fine, really important for me is, not to copy other persons drawings or so on, but I try to learn from them. I draw much characters from difference animes to push my drawing skill and it works! It helps me to create my own style and putting more and more perfection and love to the drawings and character designs. It is so interesting to see how much I got better since I starting with anime characters. And to put more skill in my art, I changed often my style and the challenges to draw not only humans, but Furries and animals too, different body types and perspectives. Studying and learning drawing is so much fun, but hard in the same time. But when I see the finish of an work, it makes me proud about it and pushing me more to get better. So thank you for all your tipps and tricks to draw better, it helps me very much. 😊
I love your videos, I've been drawing seriously for almost 20 years, and often can't find tutorials that aren't just a repeat of what I've already learned in that time. With the videos you make, you take an angle and break things down in a way that's extremely informative and point out things I don't often see in tutorial vids. Remember that some people have weird proportions. If you want to make a character appear as special, interesting or memorable use their body rather than hair and cloths alone, make them unique in shape. Try pushing your anatomy and don’t just wait until you “master the basics” learn from observation always but don’t stop practicing the skill of exaggeration, they can be trained independently and side by side.
8:10 really helped me, ty It really stressed me out when I thought I HAD to learn how to draw hands/fingers in literally any position or direction. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to only master a few poses
I heard a tip for drawing hands is learn how to draw an open hand, a fist, and one where the fingers are relaxed because all hands you'll ever draw will have the fingers be some combination of that
Happy to say that even as a starting artist I don't make these mistakes and I'm constantly trying to improve my anatomy and my hands and feet (those are painful). If i do make these mistakes I always notice how something is off so in the end I fix them. I always start out with simple shapes and then draw full naked bodies before I add anything on!!! 6:48 my friend once asked me why i kept drawing the whole body including muscles and shit cause none would be shown when i slapped on the outfit, and this is why, plus you can kinda see how the fabric flows when everything underneath it is right there

Yea thats what i was wondering too. Like, i have shorter arms, this arm length rule doesnt apply to me. Also, some ppls breasts do look quite high, and some quite low. All to do with different body types.
Today I'm feeling really inspired to draw because I've been reading blue period, I've filled two pages of my sketchbook already. I just decided to start a new good habit: every time I learn something new about art I'll take notes in my sketchbook and draw an example too, this way they will stick in my head longer

I tend to do the first mistake, but it's usually born out of me not paying much attention to what I actually draw
Takeaway:
1. Proportion
2. Place female/male breasts too high
3. Anatomy foreshortening mistake
4. Dislocated Limbs
5. Bad Hands & Feets
I can fix all of those except point five. That one is non negotiable.

Regarding foreshoretening, the hard thing to do is in the lower part of the body. It is really hard to connect that between upper body and the legs.

Even the construction was a challenge as the proportions were off. The rough sketch was a mess as now I was adding organic lines to the construction. The final sketch was where I tried to clean everything up. It took 20-30+ minutes for each figure. Now, I wasn't doing gesture drawing or timed exercises as I was doing figure drawing for specific reasons: as a way to improve my seeing (proportions, negative space, relative size, etc) and drawing decent figures faster. By the 700 point, I could freehand draw within 5-10 minutes..longer for hard poses like back poses. Still need tons of work on the back poses. Drawing a convincing female back pose is significantly harder than a male one. That's why most drawings of female characters are from the front or side and very few from the back.
@@asimian8500 thanks for the long response! I'm glad to hear you had such big improvement as well. Drawing is very hard but once you get it, it's very fulfilling. As they say, anything good won't come easily. I like digital too but there's just something about my sketchbook lol. I mostly use my sketchbook to practice. I wanna get better at lineart as I noticed I usually avoid that

the uniquie thing here is the opening class music... it sounds just like an Art's Atack song. keep it up Marc, you are my favorite.
Well the pose is to be exaggerated and unrealistic but believable. One example my favorite artist Michael Turner, was said to be great but many say his proportions where not correct. But his work to me was perfect. It separates you from others. It needs to make sense but dynamic as well.

I really like the way you explain things mixed with a portion of humor. You are really the first and only person who was able to explain things so good, that I really improved drawing them. For example hair. I looked at so many hair drawing tutorials, but they couldn't explain it properly, but after you made this video explaining how to draw hair, I suddenly was able to draw it! Still need a lot of practice though, but drawing hair is so much easier for me now.

I gave up on trying to be an artist. I gave up on creating art but somehow I keep coming back here... it hurts to realize that you'll never be good enough and that you'll never achieve what you dreamed of. So I gave up on my dreams. It doesn't matter though. Your content is great, keep it up.

Hiya, I know there’s a pretty low chance of you seeing this Marc but hello. I have been watching your videos for quite a while, as a young artist I tend to expect too much of myself when it comes to art and I scrap most of my digital pieces before finishing. I usually stick to the simple stuff and even then it’s difficult. Your videos helped me in a lot of ways when it comes to digital art, so I kind of just wanted to say thanks and I’m sure you’ve helped many others too :)

Mark, thanks to your anatomy videos I can draw the human figure pretty decently!
I no longer get the proportions wrong as much as before, and recently I gained a better understanding about the different body types thanks to the structure classes and practicing/studying to simplify the body parts to simple 3d volumes. I practice drawing spheres, cubes and cylinders in perspective and in different angles sometimes, so that helped a big deal as well.
I still have a long way to go, but recently I've been practicing (and *observing* ) intensely and thanks to that I think I'm improving really fast!

Excellent video. I think, what you should show next is intentional anatomy mistakes - like those that are idealizing the body - eg. too elongated and slim girls and guys with too much muscles...

I draw often characters „naked“ to study the body proportions and it is fun. You are right in all points. I draw over 15 years and drawing over 10 years humanoids. I learned much, but it could be still better. I don‘t need art class or lesson to learn to draw, but I use to like references and „body study“ pictures to get more experience in drawing. And it works fine, really important for me is, not to copy other persons drawings or so on, but I try to learn from them. I draw much characters from difference animes to push my drawing skill and it works! It helps me to create my own style and putting more and more perfection and love to the drawings and character designs. It is so interesting to see how much I got better since I starting with anime characters. And to put more skill in my art, I changed often my style and the challenges to draw not only humans, but Furries and animals too, different body types and perspectives. Studying and learning drawing is so much fun, but hard in the same time. But when I see the finish of an work, it makes me proud about it and pushing me more to get better. So thank you for all your tipps and tricks to draw better, it helps me very much. 😊

Remember that some people have weird proportions. If you want to make a character appear as special, interesting or memorable use their body rather than hair and cloths alone, make them unique in shape. Try pushing your anatomy and don’t just wait until you “master the basics” learn from observation always but don’t stop practicing the skill of exaggeration, they can be trained independently and side by side.

I heard a tip for drawing hands is learn how to draw an open hand, a fist, and one where the fingers are relaxed because all hands you'll ever draw will have the fingers be some combination of that

Happy to say that even as a starting artist I don't make these mistakes and I'm constantly trying to improve my anatomy and my hands and feet (those are painful). If i do make these mistakes I always notice how something is off so in the end I fix them. I always start out with simple shapes and then draw full naked bodies before I add anything on!!! 6:48 my friend once asked me why i kept drawing the whole body including muscles and shit cause none would be shown when i slapped on the outfit, and this is why, plus you can kinda see how the fabric flows when everything underneath it is right there

Yea thats what i was wondering too. Like, i have shorter arms, this arm length rule doesnt apply to me. Also, some ppls breasts do look quite high, and some quite low. All to do with different body types.

I just decided to start a new good habit: every time I learn something new about art I'll take notes in my sketchbook and draw an example too, this way they will stick in my head longer
