    Do you want a new old guitar? GOOD NEWS! Fender has a whole line of new old guitars they are calling the "American Vintage II" line. Of course I went for the 66' Jazzmaster but maybe you think I should have covered a different guitar from the line, tell me what you think in the comments section. And try to talk me out of messing up this pristine new old guitar with sketchy relic techniques. By the way I changed the strings on this guitar before filming, I just prefer heavier strings on my jazzmasters and I wanted to show off they way I would have it set up.

      The only acceptable relicing.

      Plus these have a pretty thin layer of nitro, so it’ll actually relic itself properly

    Nope, that’s the right one. I would not suggest relicing that guitar, since it will relic naturally.

      That Nitro coat is life. My friend and I have American Originals and he was horrified about the scratches and I was like my dude I love that it gives the guitar character that’s the beauty of the nitro coat

    Right guitar. I would say don't intentionally relic it, but let it naturally relic over time.

    You’re the surf master. There’s no better guitar than the JM to see you demo. And if you just play it - that will ‘relic’ it without any extra effort. 👍

    Beautiful jazzmaster; I'm a sucker for block inlays. I think you picked the right guitar, and though i'm not a fan of relics, i'd be curious to see what tasteful relic options you'd pick.

    I just got the Squier 40th and believe it or not I was The Impression That I Get as well! I only figured out the barre chords because I’m only at 30 Cycle Hum playing level but still - underdeveloped minds “think” alike! 😜🤘🏻🎸

    I love this iteration of the Jazzmaster. A local music store has an Original 60s Jazzmaster and a Lake Placid Blue Vintage II Jazzmaster in stock, so I was able to compare them, and the 7.25" radius fretboard on the Vinyage II was a better fit for my hand than the 9" one on the Original 60s. I always try guitars unplugged first so I can focus on how they feel, then I plug them in. I ran out of time, so that's going to be what I compare next, when I go back. So far, I love this guitar, and it was a good one to pick for this demonstration and review.

  • @LuisRFeliu

    yes, you chose the right guitar and color. Put it directly at sunlight for a couple of months. I did that with my dakota red "new" old fender mustang and it turned into a beautiful vintage faded red guava color. Then you can relic it. I think it would look a little off with that brand new looking red finish. whatever you decide we'll be watching!!

  • @Metalpug79
    @Metalpug79 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The Dakota Red color you chose looks really nice, but since I'm always partial to blue, I would've probably chosen the Lake Placid Blue. Each of the colors do look good though

      im thinking anodized would be a cool look, also i have a weird thing for single ply white pickguards. i might try going that direction.

  • @GamerPastHisPrime
    @GamerPastHisPrime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Definitely the one I would have picked. In that colour too. I have a Sherwood Green JM, and I still want that one lol. I wouldn’t Relic it. It’ll get there on it’s own if you love it enough. I have a relic’d Jag in Dakota red, and it’s nice, but the shine on yours has my eyes open wide. I’d keep it like that as long as you can.

  • @davidlynch4338
    @davidlynch4338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I love it and I am definitely interested in it. I only wish it came with the 9.5" radius fretboard. I'd love a binding and blocks Jazzmaster with that radius...
    Maybe some more colours would be nice as well. I like the red and blue, but some new interesting choices would be cool. I know it is a 66 re-issue, but...
    Please don't relic it. Just play it. It would be more interesting to see how it ages naturally with someone putting in some long hours playing it.

    • @iosonofrancesco
      @iosonofrancesco ปีที่แล้ว

      Search for an American Original one...is the totally the same guitar but with a beautifoul 9.5 radius fretboard.

    Definitely made the right choice although I really want to see the teles with the wide ranges demoed. Part of me wants to watch a relic job being done but the other part says let it age naturally.

  • @TrickyPickins
    @TrickyPickins 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I would say not to relic it, but if you wanted to change the looks while keeping the offset vibe, I would try putting white competition stripes on it. I think that would look pretty good.

  • @PedalChainsAddiction
    @PedalChainsAddiction 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Love the Jazzmaster. I do think the Lake Placid Blue is gorgeous, but you can’t go wrong with a Dakota Red. I absolutely think you should relic it. I’d love to see both the result and the process. Nice work changing the strings. Incidentally, what brand of strings do you like? Does it change depending on the gauge? Who makes the best 11s?

    • @60CycleHumcast

  • @AndrewWukusick

    If you do plan on relicing it, since it is nitro you can age the finish with powerful uv light, or get checking by heating it then quickly putting it in somewhere very cold. Like put it out in the hot sun for the afternoon then immediately put it in a chest freezer. It does have a risk of warpage if it's too extreme though so that's something to note

  • @brianpoole9514
    @brianpoole9514 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Right one! I suggest playing it outside in the mornings and evenings so you get the sunshine and playing relic.

  • @DanFlashes99
    @DanFlashes99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I can't explain why but I think red lends itself to relicing more than other colors. I would have gotten Lake Placid blue myself, but with the red, I think light relicing would look good

    I have reliced a nitro guitar before, it is an art to make it not look really fake and terrible. If you do I would stick to dings, checking, and aging the plastic and metal parts. Making the wood look aged is very difficult.

    Love the color! But I know that all the fender American reissue made after the 1980s don’t have a white primer undercoat, In fact it’s a polyurethane sealer over wood and then color and clear . My 1986 57 reissue p bass is fiesta red with a white undercoat. Small details that I thought would share. Great video and playing keep it up👍

    OK, 60SH lets Discuss,
    I got the AVII Jazzmaster in red. I took me no time to get original Fender parts for a Mustang style bridge, new tort scratchplate and added these to my new piece. I easily took the white scratchplate off and that original set of saddles had to go. Its like a APII and its a customisation I can be content with. No regrets!

    I like the new lighting in the beginning for the guitar, but you need a second source of light to level it out a bit. Love the guitar, it is a beautiful choice.

    • @60CycleHumcast

      I KNOW! i really like that backlit wall look, i actually had 4 lights running durring the intro. a small light at table level for the guitar, two dim side lights and the light pointed at the background. I need to get a second overhead light to be a hair light while the wall is being illuminated.

    Great video! I was talking to Mike Adams yesterday asking his opinion on this new line. I personally thought these were perfect modern interpretations until he brought up one thing that I couldn't ignore. These are supposed to be 66 JMs but they have a pre-CBS headstock. Quoting him, "Don't call it a 66 if it isn't a 66."

  • @devilsdoorbell
    @devilsdoorbell 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just before you said it, I was thinking "a $2400 guitar shouldn't have those QC issues." I'd figure a Squier might have them, but not this. My only gripe about the authentic 60s style is the truss rod adjustment placement. I have a 60s MIJ bass and had a local tech route out a channel so the neck doesn't have to come off to adjust the truss rod.
    I'm in the camp that doesn't like relics beyond a very light to almost medium effort. By the time you're doing the forearm paint rub, I'm out. But I can't deny that some paint checking and a few dings and scuffs would suit it just fine, or some UV fade.

    LPB is my favorite guitar color so I would have gone w/that over Dakota Red every time. Then again, CME has an LPB JM w/matching headstock for a lot cheaper, so making some upgrades it's way cheaper. I'm not a relic fan personally, but sounds like you want to, so your enjoyment playing it wins. This will be a great guitar to continue your dive into shoegaze tho

    I immediately lost 2 high E strings to the split top tuner. The hole is not as deep as the 60s. Also, the high E and B strings straddle the saddle adjustment holes on the bridge. You would think that, after 60 years, Fender would fix this (get it right)!

    Great review. Really great Jazzmaster, I think the best reissue so far from Fender. The pickups are superb and sound how a Jazzmaster should. I'd definitely buy this one without a doubt, but I damn well just bought a new Jazzmaster Pro II, and spent money on having it PLEK setup, and sorted out the Panorama tremolo spring issue as per your earlier video. Anyway, I think yours just looks too new, and it would sound even better if you gave it the relic treatment. You would love it even more.

    Thanks for explaining that rhythm switch. Up until right now I never understood what made these guitars a "Jazz" Master,
    Man, Leo was a frikkin' genius!
    In answer to your questions; It comes in 3 Tone Sunburst and Lake Placid Blue, but you picked the right color, Dakota Red is just different enough to standout in your collection, but still got that '66 vibe. The wood is Alder.
    Yes, relic (or not) to your hearts delight. It's your guitar and if it were mine I would do light checking on the body with the freezer technique and leave the neck and head stock alone. I would also put a cool surf sticker on it. 🏄‍♀
    And yes you picked a winner with the Jazzmaster. It suits you.
    Would I tune in to watch Ryan play C&W on a vintage Tele? Probably not.

Re: should you relic it? - No. Just don't handle it with kid gloves and simply play it regularly like it clearly deserves, and it'll soon pick up real dings etc. and you'll have the satisfaction later of being able to look back and know that they are genuine. Real wear is a sign of good guitar. It'd be much more interesting and informative for you to post occasional updates showing how genuine wearing is occurring than trying to fake it.

    Looks pretty solid. I know it's a different beast, but how do you compare it to your AM Pro II? Also, age it. Nothing crazy, but do what you can to get some checking and speed up the fading. I vote for black knobs and pickup covers!

    Dakota red offsets are some of the most beautiful guitars, I have a mustang with the matching headstock, now I gotta save my Pennies for a Jaguar and this jazzmaster

    Yes, you are correct...JMs are in fact the most interesting solid body electrics in the Fender lineup. Yes, you should very lightly relic it. Get some hardware aging and light checking going. I'll do mine if you do yours.

    TBH I think you chose the "right" one. These AVIIs have all the features I love in a Jazzmaster, and what is, imo, the best of the Jazzmaster flair!
    As for relicing...I, personally, dont like relicing. I think it's a waste to take a perfectly good guitar and artificially beat it up and scuff it up. To each their own, it's your guitar.

    Love that ax. Relic it. You have tons of shiny guitars, do you have a relic'd one? No? Well, you could. Relic'd JMs look so damned cool.

    What aboit the TVL its similar and in oxblood. Changing the guard mint or cream? Classic corvet looker. What other colors did you like? Rank? Great show thanks for the tunes.

    Matching headstock, block inlays, fretboard binding, offset shape. This ticks all the boxes for me.

    No relic. But a black pickguard and pickup covers, and some of those tele deluxe knobs… that would be a tasteful alteration. It sounds perfect as-is though!

    Nope, that's the right one, had there been a Jaguar I would have said Fiesta red in that one. Mild relicing, lightly buff out the sheen a bit and headstock, perhaps a mint colored guard and matching covers. I have not seen the lineup in person, but wonder if the glossy neck is like the Squier CV's ? If so a green pad could bring that gloss down. Major score though all the way around, sounds great !!

    Ryan, do you have access to Fender Japan? Dying to hear the new MIJ "Junior" 24" scale Jazzmaster..

      not that im aware of. Id love to check out some of the MIJ fenders though. My relationship with fender tends to be pretty 'don't call us, we'll call you'. If they offer to send anything MIJ obviously ill be saying yes lol.

    If you really want to distress it... just use wet 1600 sandpaper... will only kill the "shinny/buffing" without being tooo overkill

    I really like the squeals of joy from new instrument owners about the nitro treatment. I have even been able to have fun with the so-called nitro varnish used in the furniture industry. So called because, without the addition of a hardener, this substance dries longer than a regular oil varnish!🤔 So, for the last 15 years, I have been relatively skeptical of this material.

    Dont really know enough about you or what your trying to use it for or where your influence and style are coming from. Sounded great, did that surf sound perfectly a lot of vintage and non vintage indie rockers are gonna love it. Personally the finish is a little too bright and bling for me. What attracted & had curious about the guitar was after I had read that the pole pieces being further apart on these pick ups offer a fatter, wider sound. Definitely hear a lot of contrast between this and a strat, tele, or Jaguar.

    That might be the most "right" guitar I've seen in years. Fender seem to be REALLY good at putting combinations together that get people excited.
    I think they're really well positioned to try their hand at a new design, perhaps a new offset. And something like a Bass VI for the modern age.
    Also - someone who knows more about contemporary music -- is there a particular reason why Jazzmasters seem so popular with young 'uns at the minute? Are a lot of new bands using them, or is it just the 90s grunge and shoegaze vibe?

    • @60CycleHumcast

      jazzmasters have been in a state of 'these weren't popular but now they are' for like 40 years now, lol.
