  • The British weather is a national obsession and whilst it may not always be completely accurate, our appetite for the weather forecast is bigger than ever. This is the story of the weather itself, some of the people who forecast it and those who depend on it.

Whoever mixed the audio did a REALLY good job. Watch this with stereo headphones and it actually sounds like you're in each place.

Bill Giles and Ian McCaskill - weather celebrities of their day. Always liked Ian. Michael Fish was good too, until 1987. He lost too much face with the storm, which was rather sad.

Well back in 1987 the Met Office didn't have Supercomputers like they do now,if they had Supercomputers back in 1987 they would have seen the Great Storm coming days in advance

The modern weather-maps of the UK are still not at the right angle of view ....... they're depicting them as looking up from the south towards the north (given that the Earth is curved) and so Scotland STILL doesn't look it's actual size! They should show the map of the UK as seen looking straight down on it from the I.S.S, then the countries that make up the UK would be shown in their proper scale.

The "Highs and Lows" of British weather, Its called Manic Depression or BI-polar disorder. At least that's how it makes me feel. Although not too many Highs, butplenty of Lows, as I live in hope of a decent day.

There are bands of air circulating the world that can effect the winds and cloud cover. All these are factors in the weather. Also lakes and mountains can play with the weather patterns.in the U S we are lucky that the weather service has a better way of predicting our weather and can frequently give us a fairly accurate weather forecast for 10 days at a time. Coastal weather is always unpredictable. Scientists have learned to chart the ocean currents which allow for early tracking of many severe storms. We also have local radar tracking of current weather to help and following this tracking, it is possible to predict where storms are headed.
