  • In this episode, we continue our journey around the Isle of Skye, departing from Dunvegan with a special guest on board. Join us as we embark on another memorable chapter filled with breathtaking landscapes, delightful encounters, and remarkable natural wonders.
At the ferry terminal of Uig, we warmly welcome our dear friend Nina, who joins us on Polaris for a couple of days. We set our course towards the most northerly point of our sailing season, eagerly anticipating the extraordinary sights that await us. As we round the northern end of Skye, we commemorate this significant milestone with a toast of NcNean's finest whisky, savouring the moment and the beauty that surrounds us.
Entering the Sound of Raasay, we are immediately captivated by the stunning rock formations that grace the landscape. The sheer cliffs and rugged coastal features stand as testaments to the enduring power of nature. As we sail closer, we are treated to a remarkable sight-the famous Mealt Falls. Cascading over a towering 60-meter cliff, the water plunges into the sea, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle.
Seeking a peaceful haven for the night, we anchor in the secluded and picturesque anchorage of Acairsheid Mhor, situated on the serene Isle of Rona. Here, tranquility embraces us as we bask in the serenity of the surroundings. As we explore the area, our hearts soar when we spot a magnificent Sea Eagle gracefully circling high above the rocky cliffs. It is a humbling and unforgettable encounter, reminding us of the abundant wildlife that thrives in these pristine environments.

    Hi!
We are Kathrin and Daniel sailing, cruising and living aboard our sailing yacht SV Polaris Helvetica, a 14m Bavaria Cruiser 46 from 2017. We left our native Switzerland and moved to the UK almost two decades ago. In 2021, in our mid 50-ies and after our three boys left the nest we made the big decision to leave the rat race in London and to make our beloved sailboat our primary floating residence.
Over the years we added a generator, got rid of the propane gas cooker and replaced it with an electric stove and oven, changed our house battery bank to Lithium (LiFePo, Lithium Iron Phospate), added a 1,200W solar arch and a water maker. With these upgrades Polaris is now a comfortable home allowing us to cruise the coast of the United Kingdom and, most recently, Scoland, in comfort, summer and winter.
Kathrin loves to cook and bake on board, you will see some of her cookery wonders across our episodes, and makes good use of her Thermomix cooker.
We totally fell in love with our new lifestyle although we had to make some tough decisions. We vacated our rental house in London and sold and gave away all our furniture and belongings that had no space on Polaris. It is a very liberating feeling to be able to say that all we own is with us on our small sailing boat. There's nothing else to care about. We enjoy our freedom and exploring new places, discovering their history and we love making new friends along our way.

That's my favourite sailing area. I have friends with a 36 ft yacht based in the Clyde. We head NW for a few weeks at a time. I love all aspects of cruising the Scottish West coast....except the midges. Shore time is not pleasurable when they are out seeking my blood.

Honestly, we didn‘t encounter any midges this summer. I consider ourselves lucky! Perhaps we were too late in the season (end of August, early September). We‘ll check it out again next summer. Thanks for watching, Jimmy! Best regards, Daniel
