  • Today, we are going to talk about three characteristics of all great sports photos, and the notable exceptions to when they don't apply.
    ABOUT ME:
    I currently work as the director of photography and content of a national newspaper. You've likely seen my work in many publications including but not limited to the New York Times, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated.
    On this channel, I want to pass along tips and tricks that I have gained in my experience as a professional photographer and photo editor working in the highest level of athletic competition. I know not everybody has access to the latest and greatest gear, nor does everybody have the best field or event level access, but that's ok! By understanding how to get the most out of your gear, and understanding best practices in photography and photo editing, I can show you how to take your sports photography - or any photography for that matter - to another level.

    The way you cover the rule and exceptions too is very helpful. When you provide photo examples during your video, it drives the point home in a visual way that makes understanding immediate. You are a good teacher. I appreciate your videos. And I am glad for their relatively shorter lengths. I have trouble committing to 20+ minute videos, especially when the information could be conveyed in 5-8 minutes. So Bravo on your editing and condensing things down.

    Hi Jerry, thanks for the great perspective. I already knew these basic rules, but I'm glad to hear you talk about the exceptions to these rules that still make for great photos.

      Thanks for watching Jack! Yes the three rules definitely have an editorial or newspaper lean to it, but they are also generally the most impactful. But ultimately, what and how you shoot depends on what you are going for. Thanks again for stopping by!

    Very helpful Jerry. Even for hobbyist parents like myself, there is a lot to think about. Great work. Thanks.

      Hi Doug, thanks for watching. These are definitely points to think about, but as you may have saw if you have different photography goals or shoot for the team, isolated shots of your kids or other athletes may be your "golden rule." Have a good shoot this weekend!

    Thank you for taking the time to produce these videos and share all this helpful information! Anyone looking for tips can just come to your channel alone and get all the information they need to get on the right path to successful sports photography. I wish you had done this 5 years ago, but still so helpful even now! Thanks, Jerry!

      Haha me too. It's crazy, 10 years ago I actually wanted to do a DVD video about how to shoot sports, and about 5-6 years ago I had talked to a fellow photog about doing a series together. Neither materialized, but I'm glad I got around to doing these. It has been been fun for me, and glad that they have been helpful even today. Thanks for watching!

      To be honest, I learned just as much - if not more - about sports photography by working as a photo editor and seeing and working on pictures all the time. Thanks again for watching!

    Great video. But the bed music is a little much. Maybe turn it down a bit.

      Hey thanks for checking out another video. Unfortunately, I can't take the music out of episodes already posted, but from viewer feedback, I have went no music from the a1 video onwards. Thanks for watching!

    If u want to get good sports photos ‘ cone to Europe where footballers don’t wear so much head gear to protect themselves ‘ a good example is rugby ‘ an real mans game ‘ not wrapped up like babies the way they are in America ‘

    • @JerryTLai
      @JerryTLai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How rugby players make it through a game without serious injury is beyond me. Better fundamentals, instead of throwing their bodies in all that armor at each other, I suppose. Thanks for watching!
