  • She was the toast of Victorian London, New York, and Paris. She was "adopted" by Indian chief Sitting Bull, charmed the Prince of Prussia, and entertained the likes of Oscar Wilde and Queen Victoria. Annie Oakley excelled in a man's world by doing what she loved, and won fame and fortune as the little lady from Ohio who never missed a shot.

What a great story of beginnings of extreme poverty to later great recognition based on Annie's sheer will, determination, gifted talent.
A great American story. The stuff of legends.

Can't tell you how much I'd pay to see a well-made film on the match with her arch-rival Lillian Smith. Those two women could hardly be any more different. Oakley was indeed ladylike and happily married to her husband Frank Butler, Smith on the other hand was a mouthy cocky girl less than 20 who often enjoyed flirting with the young men who came to see her perform (she also bragged repeatedly that she would dethrone the riflewoman legend). When the match finally happened, Smith performed horribly (possibly from being so cocky) while Oakley nailed all her shots. The media laughed hysterically at how one-sided it ended up being.
