Also Kate bush owns 100% of that song, and since June because of it becoming so popular again and it charted as the most streamed song in the world in early June, she has earned about 2.3 million in royalties and counting. Smart woman to make sure she owned her music and not letting a record label take it all! 👍
I don't get the Stranger Things version being more impactful to another generation, but if it gets them to listen to and appreciate the genius of Kate Bush- I am all for it!

I’m with you. I got every Kate Bush album upon their release from 1978 on and have long appreciated her completely unique talent. This is my first time seeing the much ballyhoo’d Stranger Things scene… and to me, it just looks… silly.

For all the attention “Running Up That Hill” has received, which I really appreciate for Kate… I like the song, but it might not even make my Top 20 of her songs.

I find it quite incredible that Stranger things has opened up Kate's music to a whole new audience i hope many people enjoy the music as much as we did , many moons ago.

You just have to listen to who she inspires, and I am sure people will think of Taylor Swift, writing, and producing and playing the piano, but she was inspired by someone.

She studied interpretive dance and mime! She is an absolute genius.
The great thing is that she never sold the rights to her songs like so many artists did and kept touring. She´s finally getting the money she deserves. Saw her live in Paris a while ago with my parents (yes a generation thing too, they´re big fans), amazing performer.
I don't think Kate has ever been poor - apart from being a great artist, she's also very practical.

Yes, it's Kate Bush herself dancing there. She took some dancing lessons since her teens, e.g. by Lindsay Kemp, who has also worked a lot with David Bowie (which Kate was a fan of). She saw her music as a whole show, with dancing, miming, storytelling, singing, often with a visual video version, the full music experience... ;-)
Her instruments were (with the help of her brother Paddy Bush) quite unusual, and her main "instrument" was her voice, with which she had experienced a lot. Her other brother John Carder Bush was author and photographer and sometimes added some spoken lines to her songs. She also had some incredible guest stars (Eric Clapton, Elton John, David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, Gary Brooker, Prince, Nigel Kennedy, and musicians from e.g. Alan Parsons Project, Cockney Rebel, just to name a few) and has produced some remarkable videos even before MTV required that. So she had influenced many musicians in how to do music (many name her as influence), concerts (e.g. her wireless head set in 1979), videos (MTV time), storytelling, even dancing. Okay, that was it with a short comment... ;-)
Here you can clearly identify drummer Stuart Elliott, who is well known for his work for Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel and The Alan Parsons Project.
From the US viewpoint, Kate Bush is quite a blind spot. She has a little but very enthusiastic fan base there, but is (I hope "was") generally unknown, whereas in pretty much the rest of the world (UK, continental Europe, Australia/NZ, Japan, South America) she's pretty well known if not very popular. Even those, who don't like her voice or find her music "over the top", do know her. Except for the US, which is partly a result of her clash with the US distributor and her unwillingness to tour there (heavily). She was offered a big tour, but didn't want to. Instead she did her only European "Tour Of Life" in 1979. She's also an enigma, thinking, that her music tells enough, and anyone is free to interpret it for themselves... ;-)
I have discovered my new favorite artist! I’m honestly surprised I’m just hearing her music now because it’s totally in my wheelhouse. But better late than never! Makes sense if she didn’t do concerts here. I love all this information about her too, she sounds like an incredibly unique, talented person. Can’t wait to make more videos!

BTW "Running Up That Hill" peaked at Number 3 in the hot 100 and RUTH did reach number 1 in the billboard Hot Alternative Songs and the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts plus number 1 in the billboard Global 200 charts. It reached number 1 or charted highly in numerous countries across the world. Part of the appeal of the song is that has a timeless quality it certainly wouldn't be out of place if it was released today.
I'm going to give you a very quick summary of Kate Bush, she was in the video performing interpretive dancing, Kate is multi-talented she's a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director and she was heavily involved in the staging of her two tours - 1979 "Tour of Life" and the 2014 "Before The Dawn" concert residency the tickets for all 22 dates of her residency sold out in under 15 minutes and people travelled from all over the world to see her live performances. Kate is considered to be a musical icon and pioneer who has inspired/influenced countless numbers of artists/musicians who have followed her.
Kate started writing songs when she was about 11, by her mid-teens Kate had written well over a hundred different songs, some reports say nearer two hundred but despite creating demo tapes of Kate songs, the family weren't having any success in getting Kate noticed by record companies. However a friend of the family handed over the demos to David Gilmour guitarist of the band Pink Floyd, who decided to see Kate perform in person at the family home and after some other performances he was convinced that she was very talented and so he paid to book studio time with session musicians so that professional recordings could be made of three songs that he selected from Kate's massive collection. It was the resulting recording from that session that he passed onto EMI executives who wanted to sign her up on the spot, Kate did sign for EMI when she was 16 years old. Two of the three songs from that session did end up on her debut album.
In the time between signing up and starting to put together her album, Kate took lessons to improve her piano playing, had dance lessons with Lindsay Kemp (who also has also taught David Bowie) and fronted her brother's pub band.
When Kate did complete her 1st album, when it came to which song should the debut single EMI and Kate disagreed, in the end Kate got her way with "Wuthering Heights" which was inspired by the book of the same name by Emily Bronte (who Kate shares a birthday with), now due to how unusual the song was EMI executives thought that it was going to be a massive flop instead it became a huge worldwide smash hit, reaching number 1 in numerous countries, including the UK. By reaching number 1 in the UK Kate became the 1st female artist to have a self written song reach number one - the first of many records and milestones that Kate has set over the years in the UK single and album charts. To date Kate has had 25 top 40 singles in the UK. Wuthering Heights chart performance was only exceeded this year when RUTH turned into an even bigger worldwide smash hit.
BTW Kate's debut album "The Kick Inside" ended up selling a million copies in the UK.
As a Kate Bush (from the start) I'm so happy that a whole new bunch of people have been given an opportunity to be made aware of Kate's marvelous music, hopefully some will decide to explore her extensive catalogue of ten studio albums, two live albums and two compilation albums. I'm also very happy that Kate is finally getting some overdue recognition in America.

She sounds like a wonderfully talented artist and I’m glad I was able to discover her. We did think she was a beautiful dancer in the video and the message of the song came across just through the movement and clothes. It was beautiful.

Regarding suggestions I will mainly limit myself to a selection of single releases from Kate's first seven albums, so you could start at the beginning to get an idea of how Kate evolved as an artist or work backwards or sample songs from different albums in no particular order, the choice is yours.
So I'm going to start with Kate's iconic 5th album "Hounds Of Love" (1985) which is the album that features "Running Up That Hill" an album which is the perfect balance between the commercial tracks on the first side and "The Ninth Wave" concept a suite of linked songs starting with "And Dream Of Sheep". From this album I suggest Cloudbusting, "Hounds Of Love" and "The Big Sky". At around the same time I also suggest Kate's duet with Peter Gabriel on his song "Don't Give Up".
Now going back to the start from Kate's 1st album "The Kick Inside" (1978) a must is Kate's debut single "Wuthering Heights" which was so unlike anything in the charts at time and became a worldwide smash hit, there are two versions of music video - version 1 "White Dress" (the version broadcast in the UK) and version 2 "Red Dress" shown elsewhere. I also suggest "The Man with the Child in his Eyes"
Then from Lionheart (1978) the songs Wow and "Hammer Horror". Next her 3rd album "Never For Ever" (1980) where Kate is credited as a co-producer consider Babooshka, "Army Dreamers" and Breathing.
Kate's 4th album "The Dreaming" (1982) is the 1st album where Kate is the sole producer, it's considered to be her most experimental "out there" album - but see what you think after listening to "Sat in Your Lap", "The Dreaming" and "There Goes a Tenner".
An aside in 1986 the compilation album "The Whole Story" was released which included a new song "Experiment IV".
The next studio album after the "Hounds Of Love" was "The Sensual World" (1989) I suggest "This Woman's Work", "The Sensual World" and "Love and Anger".
Then finally (for now?) there's "The Red Shoes" (1993) from which I suggest "Rubberband Girl", "Moments Of Pleasure"

I think one needs to watch the show to truly grasp how impactful this song is not only in context of the show but why us fans are so connected to it
The increased interest as a result of 'Stranger Things' meant that it was the third time it was released in the UK, all of which hit the top 10. Kate hardly troubled the US charts until now but was a 'regular' in the UK charts with 16 top 10 hits. I'd strongly recommend "This Woman's Work" which is mostly about parenthood and the quite stunning "Moments of Pleasure" which is about Kate remembering people that she met in her life who have since passed away, including her mother.
I'm so glad to hear she is appreciated (and rightfully so) in the UK. I'll admit, I am one of the Americans who only heard of her because of Stranger Things, but I feel I became an instant fan that wanted to hear more! I am preparing myself for the emotional roller coaster that This Woman's Work and Moments of Pleasure will take me on

I'm 68 and this series of shows had a major impact on my life in the way only one other artist has. I've watched this "series" a few times, but you can only watch it so many times. Still, these reaction videos add an extra dimension that furthers my enjoyment. Thank you!

Interesting response - I get all those emotions from the original but not so much from Stranger Things. The combo of dance and the song is incredibly powerful in my opinion. That may be just me not being able to transfer the original meaning to a new setting. As others have said, Kate Bush really is one of a kind. In the UK, she is both the youngest female singer / songwriter to have a number 1, (Wuthering Heights) and the oldest (this one).
I first heard Kate Bush when I was a student in 1978 and have been a fan ever since. I had the radio on whilst unwinding prior to going to bed and Kashka from Baghdad was played.
Running up that Hill set the record for the longest time taken to reach no 1 in the UK from its release.
we had not heard from kate in years , she vanished , then while watching the blockbuster film Back to the future , during the Adverts at the beginning an independent film film called Cloudbusting came on with music telling a story , everyone in the cinema look at each other and go that looks a bit like kate bush , where has she been , that was just the introduction to Hounds of Love album

One you realise that Kate is an avid reader you can understand where many of her songs came from, she converted many sections of books and turned them into songs. Multi talented…dancer songwriter musician
Only a Stranger Things fan can understand those tears! I've been a Kate Bush fan from the beginning - I was 10 when Wuthering Heights came out but was mesmerised by her performance on Top of the Pops in the UK. But Stranger Things brings something else entirely to the table. Some of Kate's songs are emotional but I'm not sure I ever cried to Running Up That Hill before Stranger Things!

An interesting point about this song being used in Stranger Things is that the showrunners (The Duffer Brothers) wanted to use this for Max's theme song and Kate Bush said yes. Typically, Kate is very protective of her music and owns all of the copywrites to it. It turns out that she is a huge fan of Stranger Things and loved the idea. It turned out to be a win-win for all involved. That makes it even more special to me.
Maxwell also did a cover of another Kate bush song but he never shared that fact !! he had a hit with it called "woman's work" but Kate's original and the video I think blows it out of the water

Kate Bush was trained as a dancer
In the 80's in the bigger market's like here in LA, she got a decent amount of play on the station Kroq ..Running Up the Hill was very much a staple that was played often on the station..including a smattering of other songs by her over the years, specially from the Sensual World album.Also including her collab's with peter gabriel which often got played a lot as well.

The most interesting/funny case of an old song suddenly selling loads of copies was when people in The UK got so frustrated with the winner of Pop Idol/X Factor... being Christmas number 1 that a campaign started to make Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine number 1 on Christmas day, and it worked 😂

She imagined that by making "a deal with God", they could exchange places and reach a greater understanding.The song was originally titled "A Deal with God", but representatives at EMI Records feared this would make it unpopular in more religious countries.The album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)".
The music video features Bush performing an interpretive dance with dancer Misha Hervieu.The video was directed by David Garfath while the dance routines were choreographed by Diane Grey.Bush and Hervieu are shown wearing grey hakama.Bush wanted the dancing in "Running Up That Hill" to be more of a classical performance. She stated that dance in music videos was "being used quite trivially, it was being exploited: haphazard images, busy, lots of dances, without really the serious expression, and wonderful expression, that dance can give. So we felt how interesting it would be to make a very simple routine between two people, almost classic, and very simply filmed. So that's what we tried, really, to do a serious piece of dance."
The choreography draws upon contemporary dance with a repeated gesture suggestive of drawing a bow and arrow, intercut with surreal sequences of Bush and Hervieu searching through crowds of masked strangers. At the climax of the song, Bush's partner withdraws from her and the two are then swept away from each other and down a long hall in opposite directions by an endless stream of anonymous figures wearing masks made from pictures of Bush and Hervieu's faces. MTV chose not to show this video (at the time of its original release) and instead used a playback "live" performance of the song recorded at a promotional appearance on the BBC TV show Wogan. According to Paddy Bush, "MTV weren't particularly interested in broadcasting videos that didn't have synchronized lip movements in them. They liked the idea of people singing songs.
I just want add that Max wanted to swap places with her brother who committed suicide. This scene is about DEPRESSION AND SUICIDE. Vecna represents inciting this. Max changes her mind and runs back to her friends cuz she doesn’t want to die…✌️

Easy explained, different versions for different goals. The newer version was made to emphasize the dramatic scene in Stranger Things. The original version was made for the charts and played in the clubs so that people could dance to it . BTW "Running up that hill" was a big success in Europe not so much in the US. That's why older American people can't remember that song.

Hello, pls react to Maytree's cover of this song. They're a Korean Acapella group, no instruments, voices only. They're incredibly talented, my new artist discovery of 2022. Then after reacting to them doing Running up that Hill, pls react to to them doing Colors of the Wind, it is absolutely gorgeous! (Maytree became famous the past 2 years due to their fun but incredibly impressive vocal simulations of gaming instrumental songs, movie intros etc. But they've been doing full length acapella songs for many many years. They are exquisite and extremely likeable :)

So, are you saying there are two different versions of the song? Because I'm fairly sure that's not the case. Or are you just comparing it's use as a song tied in to a TV show as opposed to simply standing on its own? Because the old thing about "Oh listen it's our song" or the million other variations of that are nothing new. Sorry but this just didn't really make any sense to me.

I disagree with your interpretation of this classic. Your mom looked so lost watching this, but the song doesn't change it's meaning just because of its use in Stranger Things. It's the same classic song. But if it gets your mom to give this genius a chance, then I guess it's worth it.

Annoys me people don't understand that this song is based on Cathy in the novel "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, Kate's and mine favourite book! The books is Masterpiece, arguably the greatest novel ever written, and when you read it, you understand everything about Kate Bush, she is Cathy running up that hill.....would, untamed, passionate, gothic, ahead of her own time.❤️🙏

Have you seen my other Kate Bush videos? This was before I explored more of her music. I'm allowed to be emotional at what ever makes me emotional. I was brought to tears by Kate's music too; I have a whole playlist just for her songs.
Kate Bush's original is by far the better version in my opinion. The original is about the music and the performance, I can't find any connection to the imitation.
