For anyone who doesn't know, Kelvin Kiptum and his trainer died in a car accident in Kenya on February 11th. He is the current record holder for the marathon and it seems like he was on track to be the first person to run a sub 2-hour marathon later this year. He was only 24 and leaves behind a wife and 2 children. RIP Kiptum
For beginners, I would honestly suggest the couch-to-5K training program. It's a 3 day a week program (free mobile app), that progressively turns from more walking and a little bit of running, to more running and a little bit of walking, to just straight running. It's incremental every week, and is about 8-9 weeks to complete. At this point, I've even been doing couch-to-10K myself (again). I seem to have formed a habit where I kinda take 2-3 months off of running at the end of the year because it gets dark out too quickly (I really only go run after work, so 5-6PM), and then start the training app from the beginning again at the start of the year (I'm currently back on week 4). I've been doing this for about 2-3 years now probably.
Yeah, I'm American but I'm doing one from the NHS/UK that's available as a podcast. Laura is keeping my time and telling me when to run and when to walk and giving me tips. The music isn't all that great, but I don't have to look at a watch. I'm three weeks in and so far, it's really easy. I'm running in a 5k at the end. Or jogging. Or sauntering forward with faster than walking intentions.
@@SatipatthanaSakuraDragona Yup, the couch-to-5K one I've used before also is basically just a timer in my ear telling me when to run or walk, just without the music. I usually have Spotify on for my own music... It definitely gets more challenging as you get farther in though, as easy as it feels at the beginning (as is the point obviously). I've used the couch-to-10K one, and ran a 10K with my sister in law at the end of the year a couple years ago. Felt like a great accomplishment after the training, so good luck with your 5K!
even just for the snow flakes. I cyclocommute, and keeping snowflakes out of my eyes is usually the reason I put on the goggles first, even if it's warm enough tempwise
Hey Craig! I've been running 4 times a week since 2022. There were a LOT of little things that started my running habit, your videos were one of those things. Thank you!
I read this book: There's No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom's Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids and WOW!!! It's so eye opening. I was thinking about it while you were gearing up to go out in the snow and I definitely recommend it, especially since you and Chyna are parents.
Craig's watch starting to show the text of him saying no I'm not talking to you Siri, made me think of kids who grab your hand and hit you with it, and say "stop hitting yourself" LOOOOOL.
As a swedish guy I must say this is very well done! In Sweden during those temperatures most people would've just stay'd inside and denying running completely but you pulled through man! Keep up!
Thanks for sharing how doable winter running is! Sure, sometimes it's a hassle, but it's really lovely being outside after a fresh snow fall once your body and brain are used to it, and developing the habit can be a really helpful way to get through the short days and long months of Canadian winters. (Pro tip: wear ski goggles to prevent skin exposure when it's really cold, and ignore the haters)
i dont know what it was like on the south side of madison, but at least on the north side and on the ithsmus , it felt like the city did a realy poor juob clearing the snow from roads and trails this year so mad respect for running through that
I started running with a run club that’s sponsored by one of our local breweries here in Northern NY last fall. At 52, I hadn’t run in more than 10 years. I still do the run/walk 5k in about 40 minutes, we run a 5k every Thursday. Out mantra is Earn your Beer. They run year round, so I can relate to this video 100 percent. This winter I’ve ran in near zero temps, in freezing rain, and in lake effect snow through 7 inches of fresh powder. There’s something about going out and doing it when you know most people wouldn’t even walk a mile in those conditions, that makes you feel like you accomplished something special.
As a person in Australia, who has never seen snow, seeing the ice crystals on the eyelashes was astounding to me - That happens?! I never would have considered that!! Wow!!!! One of the things we have to worry about here is heat stroke, which can be pretty dangerous, but at the other end of the spectrum. Wow, eyelash ice crystals... I learnt something today... And thank you for the Celsius temps - This made so much more sense to me!
As someone who walks everyday, no matter what the temperature, in shorts and a weighted vest, I applaud your efforts. People see me before sunrise and then ask me later in the day” what are you doing in the morning? Training for something?” I say”training for tomorrow and the next day and the day after that” Working out in the cold, winters weather is FANTASTIC
As a fellow winter runner, I agree with you that the worst is not the cold, it's the snow/ice/slush that's the problem. I bought studded shoes to solve the issue with the ground being covered in ice most of winter here (in Sweden).
When I started running (the first time) it was January and I ran regardless of what the temperature and weather was doing. It was horrible. Congrats on the dedication (better than I did this winter in Michigan--although that was due more to letting work get in the way; with the appropriate gear, as you say, it's not bad...up to a certain point), but be certain to include some rest days so your muscles can heal.
Reminding me of my youth, you know, when we were invincible and looked forward to having ice crystals on our lashes! As a former youth, I enjoyed watching you do this, and was reminded why they invented treadmills.
The first wheezy video I ever saw was a video of him talking about the first day of school, because I was nervous about starting high school. I’m now getting close to my 10 year reunion, and Craig has gray in his beard. Time flies
Literally having a fever the third time since January 6th. Had cocos for a month. Never truly got well, just better and then back to the beginning. Lying in bed rn, unable to sleep, nose stuffy, coughing, 38c, all that jazz. So yeah. Damn winter. We will get through this hopefully.
I genuinely loved running in very cold temperatures. It kept me from getting too hot, and there's little that energizes me more than the intense cold. Plus it's really motivating to keep running when you're cold if you're moving slow! And I say all this as someone who otherwise isn't a runner at all
I recently found you and you are IT, I love your style, your humour, videoinging perfect. Also running is hard and I might go invest in the running shoes cause now that I'm 36 and that's a real thing, the bad shoes. I signed myself up for a 10km in sept to make myself run lol
Thanks for the Celsius! I come from the states but been in Europe since 2007 and I have, for good reason, lost all relation to what Fahrenheit is. Nice challenge! Good on you man
the Sirreus felted neoprene masks (possibly with a ski gogglel are the way to go to prevent eyelash icicles. your breath can vent out from the nose holes. ski goggles are designed to vent as well, but, they might still fog up if you stop moving once you're up to temp and start sweating
I don't run but I ride 20km to work and 20km back 6 days a week with bicycle... this winter was quite nice - lowest temp was -33C but average was between -15C to -20C... at first it was harsh but body got to use to it quite fast :D
while you were going for nap times in the igloo all i could think was 'you need a shelf! don't sleep on the floor you'll perish nooooooooooo Wheezyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy', because my brain takes things way too seriously ^^
Thank you for sharing! I am sharing this with everybody who asks me how it feels to run in winter. My coldest temperature for a run was -5°F. Not sure I would go for colder than that if I can help it.
Near to sub zero Fahrenheit temperatures are tough. I run 7 miles a day typically (been years building up distance) but cut back on especially cold days, more so if there’s a breeze. Fun video and agree with all the points, watching out for any liquid in the winter is so important.
I did a trip up into the arctic circle last month, Northern Norway and Sweden. Did a 5k in each destination we stayed at. Coldest was -30 Celsius, -22 Fahrenheit. It’s all about wearing appropriate gear.
When i was in Army ,we'd run 4 miles on a couple of inches of ice and a foot of snow on top of that . temp around 10 degrees f. Get done have about 3 inches of breath frost on top of your head . It was horrible weather to be running in but war happens in all seasons .
I was told like, NO EXCUSES and so I went running in the dead of winter. Twisted my ankle and I now use a treadmil on cold or hot days. XD You slipping at the beginning was a cruel flashback. lol
I hate running in winter. I had pledged to run 50 miles in February, but out MO weather has been all over the place (seriously, 70 one day, 3 days later snow, and now almost 80). I failed my pledge miserably... BUT!! I signed up for a half in October. Perfect motivation to start training, next weekend.
I'm not really a "runner" but I do walk - I stop walking for a few weeks at a time then pick it up again - I'll average about 3.8 MPH and usually go about 3 miles. The key for me when getting back in to it has been start with 3/4 of a mile with no real speed goal. then after a few days do a mile, then a mile and a half, etc until I'm up to enough distance for the time I give myself (about 45 minutes to an hour). As Wheezy says good shoes are a must - stretching is also a must....
I recommend ski goggles for this activity. Yes you will look a little silly. But everyone probably already thinks that you are a crazy person for running when it is that cold. I started wearing goggles while riding my bike in the winter in Colorado and they made such a difference!
the comments and jokes in this video where awesome. I love your humor (maybe because it is also my humor) 😀 "what is this, the DEATH STAR???" "5 K, or maybe 5 canine" 😆
I have been a runner on and off for 15 years. In the last 6 I run all year round and love winter running. It quiet, fewer people out and don't overheat. The key is to dress properly. Here in Canada we measure temperature in Celsius and I dress for ten degrees warmer than the temp outside. So if it says -15C I dress for -5 or if it says 20C I bring more water and dress for 30C.
A month ago, I had a silly idea: I would run 5K every day for 5 days. I did! Then I would try running 6K every day for 6 days. I did! Now I’m trying to run 7K every day for 7 days. I’ve done 3 days now and still feeling optimistic about it. Wish me luck! Please? 😄
This is the first year ive owned studded running shoes and went walking and running even in -30C. Best thing ever, can run even in the most icy grounds and havent fallen once.
I appreciate both Celsius and Fahrenheit temps.
But could we get it in Kelvin?
Most Americans don't bother, so it was really nice. :) The above-zero I have a feel for the conversion, but below-zero I'm lost.
Same, but I can't even comprehend what -23C feels like :D
Sadly he made a mistake somewhere, 21f is not -17c. He must have missed the 2 because 1f is -17c
Me too!
May Kiptum rest in peace.

Thx for the figures celsius. I have no concept of fahrenheit. Or miles.
5k is 3.1 miles I think
1 mile = 1600m :)
I feel like if someone would feel me freezing and boiling point in F then at list it would make some sense, but no one will
@@therabbithat freezing in F is 32, boiling (for water) is 212, and this did not make it make sense, did it?
That’s funny because I’m a pretty average, or below average, and an American and I understand C or F and M or KM. It’s not hard.

In sub-zero F temps, I recommend glasses too when running.

even just for the snow flakes. I cyclocommute, and keeping snowflakes out of my eyes is usually the reason I put on the goggles first, even if it's warm enough tempwise
A hat with a brim can help block the wind. A disposable nitrile glove can prove some insulation while letting you use the phone.

Winter running is so underrated! Glad to see it getting some credit (also a fellow Wisconsinite/Madisonian here!)
